1) What does the Schlage A85 lock actually do, and is it right for a staff restroom door?
The A85 is the faculty restroom function in Schlage's A Series, ANSI F93. The outside knob stays fixed at all times, so entry is by key only. The A85 is built on a 2-3/8 inch backset. It ships with the 11-085 deadlatch, a square corner front measuring 1 x 2-1/4 inches, and the 10-001 strike, a square corner T-strike 1-1/8 x 2-3/4 inches with a 1-1/8 inch lip and box. If your door is already bored at 2-3/8 with a square corner latch face of that size, it is a straight swap. If the existing prep is a 2-3/4 inch backset or has radius corner faces, the standard latch and strike will not line up and you need to specify different latch and strike options, which the A Series offers.
3) Does the Schlage A85 restroom lock need to be handed when I order it?
No handing to specify. The A85 is non-handed, so one lock covers a left or right hand door and you do not have to survey the opening or worry about getting a mirrored unit. For a property manager restocking several restroom doors at once, that means a single line item rather than a split order.
4) Can I put the Schlage A85 on a fire rated restroom door?
