Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND60PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND60 vestibule function actually do at the door?
The ND60 is a double cylinder vestibule lock: the outside lever is locked or unlocked by key from the inside lever, and when the outside lever is locked the latch can still be retracted by key from outside. The inside lever is always unlocked so anyone can walk out without a key. That is the F88 function, and it is what you put on a vestibule or airlock between a lobby and the interior where you want the outer leaf controlled from inside but free egress at all times.
2) Is a double cylinder lock like the ND60 legal on an egress door?
Schlage's own caution on the ND60 is direct: double cylinder locks on residences and on any door in a structure used for egress are a life safety hazard in an emergency and their use is not recommended. Install only where existing codes permit it. The inside lever on the ND60 is always unlocked for immediate egress, which is what separates it from a double cylinder deadbolt, but the keyed-outside-when-locked arrangement still needs to be checked against your local code before it goes on an exit path.
3) Will the Schlage ND60 fit my existing door prep, or do I have to re-drill?
All ND Series locks use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so it drops into a standard 161 prep with no new boring. The ND60 ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your frame already has an ANSI strike cutout you are swapping like for like. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inches.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage ND60?
Four choices. Cylinder type: P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway (standard), L less cylinder, or J less FSIC cylinder. Keying: KD keyed different, KA keyed alike if you want a group of doors on one key, or none if you picked a less-cylinder option. Lever design from nine (Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular). Finish from ten, 605 through 643E. There is also a free-text field for special cylinder or keying requirements if the job is going into an existing master key system.
5) Can I get the ND60 keyed into the master key system already in my building?
If the building runs Schlage C keyway, yes. The standard cylinder is a conventional 6-pin in Schlage C, and the S123 cylinder and keyway designation is what a keying desk needs to work from. Order KA if you want multiple ND60s on the same key, or specify your keying requirements in the special requirements field. If your system is on an interchangeable core, order the J less FSIC cylinder option and drop your own core in. Two nickel silver cut keys come with each lock on P and P6 cylinders.
6) Is the Schlage ND60 rated for a fire door?
UL and cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4'0" x 10'0", and pair doors 3 hour at 8'0" x 8'0" with the 3/4 inch latch option. Pair doors up to 8'0" x 10'0" carry a 90 minute rating, again with the 3/4 inch latch. Note the pair-door listings depend on that 3/4 inch latch, so specify it if the opening is a labeled pair.
7) Does the Schlage ND60 meet ADA and accessibility requirements for a school or healthcare facility?
The ND Series meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. It is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, meets the Buy American Act, and meets federal FF-H-106C Series 161. For California, levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers the Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk designs, so pick from those six if you are specifying into a CA fire code job.
8) I need the ND60 to match the exit devices and other hardware already in the building. Will it?
The ND Series is suited to Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks and suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, so the lever and rose designs carry across an opening mix without looking mismatched. Ten finishes are available, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze, which covers the common commercial specs plus an antimicrobial option for healthcare corridors.
9) What is the closest Grade 1 cylindrical lever equivalent to a Schlage ND60 vestibule lock from another brand?
There is no direct vestibule-function match among the Grade 1 cylindrical levers stocked alongside the Schlage ND60. The ND60 is a Grade 1 cylindrical keyed lever with the vestibule function, where the latch is retracted by key from outside when the outside lever is locked by key in the inside lever, and the inside lever stays unlocked for immediate egress. The nearest Grade 1 keyed cylindrical levers under other brands run different functions: the Dexter C1000 Series is offered as a Grade 1 Entry/Office lever, a Grade 1 Classroom lever, and a Grade 1 Asylum (F87) lever. If the opening truly needs key control from both sides of the chassis, the ND60 function is what does it; the Dexter C1000 options change the way the outside lever is secured.
10) The ND60 double-cylinder vestibule function is not allowed on my egress door - what keyed lever should I use instead?
The ND60 is a double-cylinder keyed function, and double cylinder locks on any door used for egress are a life safety hazard in an emergency and are not recommended; install only in accordance with existing codes. Where the code official rules that out, a single-cylinder keyed lever covers the same door. The Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 Entry/Office lever and the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 Classroom lever are both keyed clutching cylindrical levers rated for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. For a storeroom opening that stays locked outside at all times, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with the Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors.
11) We key our building on Schlage C - which non-Schlage levers will accept the same key as an ND60?
The ND60 uses the Schlage S123 cylinder and keyway family, with the standard cylinder being a conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway. Two Cal-Royal levers are built around that same keyway: the AG00 entrance lever ships as a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different with a 2-3/8 inch backset, and the AG03 classroom lever ships as a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock takes a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway as well, though it is a ball knob rather than a lever. On the Yale and Accentra side, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit that lets Yale hardware take a Schlage cylinder.
12) Our doors are 2 inches thick - does a Schlage ND60 fit, or do we need a different lever?
The ND60 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset. For thicker leaves, several cylindrical levers are rated past 1-3/4 inch: the Falcon K101 Grade 1 heavy duty passage lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 passage/closet lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, the Dexter C1000 Asylum (F87) Grade 1 lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Hager 2580 Grade 2 storeroom lever covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Confirm the door thickness before ordering, because the chassis and the through-bolt length are what set that limit, not the trim.
13) Which Schlage ND60 alternative works for an electrified opening tied to access control?
The ND60 is a mechanical lock with no electronic option. Where the vestibule has to release on a signal from the access control system, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever for 12VAC/DC on 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, offered with the NZ lever and D rose in the CL33903 Series and as a keyed 12VAC/DC lever in the CL33900 Series. Fail safe means the lever unlocks when power is removed, which is a different behavior from the ND60, where the inside lever is always unlocked for immediate egress and the outside lever is held by the cylinder.
14) What looks like a Schlage ND60 substitute but is not?
Several nearby parts share the lever look without doing the ND60 job, which is a keyed Grade 1 cylindrical vestibule lock. The Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device and the CL3300 cylindrical lock series, so it is exit device and lock trim rather than a complete cylindrical lockset. The Imperial USA ED-EL500HD is heavy duty escutcheon lever trim in entry function for the ED-500 series, again trim rather than a chassis. The Codelocks CL410 and CL415 tubular latchbolt is a latch component. And the Baldwin Estate 5103 with the 5048 rose comes in passage, privacy, left hand half dummy and right hand half dummy versions, none of which are a keyed commercial vestibule function.
15) Does the ND60 need to be ordered left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. The ND60 is non-handed, so one lock covers either swing and you can stock a single part number across a building.
16) Can I use a non-Schlage cylinder in an ND Series lock?
Yes. Three spring cage sets in the ND Series support all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so a locksmith standardized on another manufacturer's keyway can keep the system intact. One caveat Schlage states plainly: the beyond-Grade-1 torque, pry and cycle numbers apply with Schlage cylinders only (conventional, FSIC and SFIC). With a non-Schlage cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1, but performance may be below what it achieves with Schlage.
17) Will the ND60 hold up in a high traffic entry, or will the lever start drooping?
Heavy duty, and the wobble question is the one Schlage answers hardest on the ND. Five points of engagement give near zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles, and it gets there without set screws or O-rings, so there is nothing to retighten on a maintenance round. It withstands 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque and 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack, plus 100 vertical lever impacts. Body is zinc and steel.
18) Should I use a vestibule lock or a storeroom lock on my entry vestibule?
It comes down to whether staff inside need to change the door's state. A storeroom function keeps the outside lever locked at all times, key retracts the latch, and nobody can leave it unlocked. The ND60 vestibule function lets someone inside use a key in the inside lever to lock or unlock the outside lever, so the vestibule can be left free during business hours and secured after. Both give free egress from inside. If nobody should ever be able to leave the outer door unlocked, go storeroom instead; ZenSupply stocks that as the ND80 F86.
19) What Grade 1 cylindrical lever alternatives are there if the Schlage ND60 is not right for the job?
For Grade 1 cylindrical levers from other brands, ZenSupply carries the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series (the CL3110 is the vandal resistant passage version, fire rated, 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors), the Falcon K Series (K101 passage, Grade 1, heavy duty, fire rated, 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch doors), the Falcon T Series with pressure release technology, the BEST 9K Series, and the Dexter C1000 Series in classroom, classroom security, entry/office and asylum functions. None of those is listed here as a vestibule function, so if the F88 double-cylinder arrangement is the requirement, the ND60 is the one that does it.
20) Can I later swap a Schlage ND60 for an electronic lock without changing the door?
Yes. All ND Series locks, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trim versions, use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, which makes them interchangeable in the same prep. The mechanical ND is the foundation for both the wired electrified ND and the NDE wireless electronic lock. So a mechanical ND60 today can become a wired or wireless ND opening later without re-boring the door. The ND60 itself is a mechanical, non-electronic lock.
21) Is there a way to stop the lever getting snapped off by vandals on a Schlage ND lock?
Ask for the Vandlgard option. It lets the lever rotate freely up and down when the lock is locked, so force applied to the lever does not transfer into the chassis. It is available on most keyed functions in the ND Series. Worth specifying on school corridors, public restroom vestibules and any opening where the lever takes abuse.
22) Is a Grade 2 entrance lever a workable substitute for a Schlage ND60 on a commercial vestibule door?
It changes both the rating and the way the door is keyed. The Schlage ND60 is a heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lever certified to ANSI/BHMA F88 with a double cylinder keyed function. Grade 2 keyed levers stocked in the same aisle include the Hager 2525 Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset, and the Falcon B511CP6D Grade 2 medium duty entry/office lever. Those are single-cylinder entry functions, so the outside lever is controlled at the outside cylinder rather than by a key in the inside lever. On a high-traffic vestibule where the ND60 duty level and F88 function were specified, the Grade 2 entry levers are a different specification, not a drop-in.
23) What matches a Schlage ND60 on the non-locking doors of the same corridor?
Where the opening does not need a key, the Grade 1 non-keyed cylindrical levers keep the corridor at the same rating as an ND60, which is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever. The Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-handed passage cylindrical lock, fire rated, for 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch doors. The Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever with pressure release technology. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors. The ND60 itself is non-handed, as is the Falcon K101 and the Falcon B101.
24) Can a dummy lever be ordered to match a Schlage ND60 on an inactive leaf?
A dummy trim carries no latch and no cylinder, so it is trim only for the inactive leaf beside a working ND60, which is a keyed Grade 1 cylindrical lever with two nickel silver cut keys per lock. In Grade 1 heavy duty, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a single dummy trim cylindrical lever, non-keyed. Stepping down, the BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is Grade 2 medium duty, the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy lever in the 5400 Series, and the Callan Bentley is a Grade 2 dummy lever. The dummy will not secure the leaf; it exists to make the inactive side read the same as the locked side.
25) Will a residential-grade entry lever hold up where a Schlage ND60 was specified?
The ND60 is a commercial heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lever with a zinc and steel body. The residential and light commercial levers are built to a different standard: the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy lever are Grade 3 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Callan Artino and Callan Bennett are Grade 3 entrance leversets, and the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. Those are aimed at lighter traffic than a Grade 1 commercial opening, and none of them carry the ND60 double cylinder vestibule function.
26) The vestibule needs code entry rather than keys - what replaces a Schlage ND60?
The ND60 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed on the Schlage S123 cylinder family. For keyless entry on the same door, the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Emtek Classic keypad leverset is a keypad lever in the Classic series, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Note the difference in how they hold the door: the Lockey 1150 is a passage-function keypad set, so it does not replicate the ND60 arrangement where the outside lever is locked by key from the inside.
27) Is a knob lockset an acceptable alternative to a Schlage ND60 in a facility that has to meet ADA?
The ND60 is a lever product and meets ADA requirements, and all ND levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the CA Fire Code, including Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. The knob-operated cylindrical locks nearby are a different operating trim: the Arrow HK11 is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob, the Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy cylindrical lock with a Tudor knob, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is an asylum cylindrical lock with a ball knob. For a facility standardizing on lever operation, those knob sets change the way the door is operated.
