Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND60PD RHO-626-XN12-001 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND60 with XN12-001 vestibule function actually do at the door?
The XN12-001 vestibule lock keeps the outside lever closed (fixed, no lever throw) while the inside lever is always unlocked, so anyone inside gets immediate egress at any time. Entry from the outside is by key only. That is the ND60 function with the outside lever changed to a closed lever, and it has to be ordered by specifying XN12-001. It suits a vestibule or lobby where the public side should never have a working handle but the occupied side must always release.
2) Will the Schlage ND60 XN12-001 fit my existing door prep, and what door thickness does it take?
It uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation shared across every ND Series lock, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trims, so it drops into an existing ND prep and is stated for both new construction and retrofit. Door thickness is 1-3/4 inches. Standard latch is the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, so if your door is bored for a 2-3/8 inch backset the latch will not line up with the existing cross bore.
3) Will the ND60 vestibule lock latch into the strike already in my frame?
The lock ships with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no box. If your frame already has an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike cutout, the supplied strike drops straight in. If the frame is prepped for a smaller T-strike, you are cutting the jamb or reusing the existing strike. Lip length matters on a deep jamb or applied stop: 1-3/16 inches is what comes standard, measured to clear the trim.
4) What do I have to choose when ordering the Schlage ND60 XN12-001, and what keys come with it?
Four decisions. Cylinder: P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway (standard), L less cylinder, or J less FSIC cylinder. Keying: KD keyed different (standard) or KA keyed alike if you want a run of doors on one key; pick None if you ordered a less-cylinder option. Lever design: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta or Tubular. Finish: ten of them, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, 643E aged bronze. Two nickel silver cut keys come per lock with a P cylinder. There is also a free-text field for special cylinder or keying requirements if you are pinning to an existing system.
5) Can I order the ND60 without a cylinder so I can pin it into my own master key system?
Yes. Two less-cylinder options exist: L, less cylinder, and J, less FSIC cylinder, so a locksmith running an existing system can supply the core. Keying should then be set to None. If you want it factory-supplied instead, the standard is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, keyed different unless you specify keyed alike. The ND chassis takes three spring cage sets that support all Schlage cylinders plus eight competitive cylinder formats.
6) Is the Schlage ND60 approved for a fire rated door, and does it meet ADA?
UL and cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 feet by 10 feet, and 3-hour pair doors to 8 by 8 feet; pair doors at 8 by 10 feet carry a 90 minute rating with the 3/4 inch latch option. It meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1. For California fire code, any lever with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less complies, which covers Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. It also meets the Buy American Act and FF-H-106C Series 161, which matters on federal work.
7) Is there a Grade 1 cylindrical lever from another brand I can use if I need a wider door thickness range than the Schlage ND60?
The ND60 is a 1-3/4 inch door lock, one thickness. If your doors run thicker or thinner, Grade 1 cylindrical alternatives with a stated range include the Falcon K101, listed for 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, the Corbin Russwin CL3110, listed for 1-3/4 to 2 inches, and the Dexter C1000 series, listed for 1-3/8 to 2 inches on the asylum function. Those are different functions though, so match the function to the opening before you match the thickness.
8) What is the closest Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever alternative to the Schlage ND60 with XN12-001 if I need a different brand?
For a Grade 1 keyed cylindrical lever from another manufacturer, the Dexter C1000 Series Entry/Office lever (DEX-C1000-ENTR) is a clutching keyed Grade 1 cylindrical lock, and the Corbin Russwin CL33900 electrified lever (COR-CL33903-KEYED-12AD) is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever in the CL33900 Series. Neither carries the vestibule arrangement of the ND60 with XN12-001, where the outside lever is closed and the inside lever is always unlocked for immediate egress. If the closed outside lever is the reason for the specification, the ND60 with XN12-001 is the item that provides it; the Dexter entry/office function has an operable outside lever that unlocks by key or button.
9) Is a Grade 2 storeroom lever like the Hager 2580 or Cal-Royal AG05 the same thing as a vestibule lock with a closed outside lever?
No. The Hager 2580 (HAG-2580WTN26D) and the Cal-Royal AG05 (CAL-AG05-26D) are both Grade 2 storeroom function levers with a keyed outside lever that retracts the latch when the key is turned. A vestibule lock with a closed outside lever has no outside operation at all -- the outside lever is fixed, and entry from that side is not by lever. The Cal-Royal AG05 uses a deadlocking latchbolt and is rated for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, while the ND60 with XN12-001 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door with a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset. Specify storeroom when you want keyed entry from the outside, and the vestibule arrangement when the outside face is meant to be non-operating.
10) My building is keyed to Schlage C -- what other levers take that keyway if I cannot get the ND60?
The Schlage ND60 with XN12-001 ships with an S123 cylinder and keyway in its standard configuration. If you are matching an existing Schlage C system on other openings, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/8 inch backset, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever uses a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is an asylum function lock with a conventional cylinder in Schlage C keyway. Note the AG00 backset is 2-3/8 inch where the ND60 latch is a 2-3/4 inch backset, so an existing bore prepped for the Schlage may not accept it without checking the latch.
11) Do I have to specify handing when I order a Schlage ND60 lever lock?
No handing to specify. The ND60 is non-handed, so one lock covers a left or right hand opening and you are not stocking two versions for a building. Lever orientation is set at install.
12) Is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock worth it over Grade 2 for a high traffic entry?
The ND Series is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 1, and tested well past it: 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque, 1,600 lb offset lever pull against pry bar attack, 100 vertical lever impacts, and 16 million cycles with near zero droop or wobble and no set screws or O-rings holding the lever up. Five points of engagement do that work. On a vestibule or lobby door taking constant public traffic, that is the difference between a lever that sags in two years and one that does not. Grade 2 options like the Falcon B511CP6D entry/office lever or the Hager 2525 entry lock are the lighter-duty route for interior or lower traffic openings. Note the beyond-Grade-1 numbers apply with Schlage cylinders; with non-Schlage cylinders performance still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but may be lower.
13) I need matching hardware on the rest of the building. Will the Schlage ND60 suite with what else is on the doors?
The ND Series suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it is designed to match Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so you can run Grade 1 on the abused openings and Grade 2 on the interior doors with the same lever and rose showing. Ten finishes and nine lever designs to standardize across a facility, and the shared ANSI 161 prep means you can swap functions door to door without changing the prep.
14) What is a vestibule lock and when should I use one instead of a storeroom or classroom function?
A vestibule function fixes the outside lever permanently, so it never turns and there is nothing on the public side to grab, pull down on, or force. Key entry only from outside, always free egress from inside. A storeroom function (ND80, ANSI F86) also stays locked outside but keeps a working outside lever, which is what you want on a service or supply door. Classroom (ND70, ANSI F84) is key-locked and unlocked from outside so staff can leave a room in passage. Choose the XN12-001 vestibule where a closed lever is the point: an unattended lobby or a vestibule where you do not want a handle presented to the street.
15) Can I get the Schlage ND60 vestibule lock keyed alike to the other locks I am buying?
Yes, keyed alike is an ordering option for running multiple locks on one key; keyed different is the standard if you do not choose it. Factory cylinders are conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway. If you need it pinned to an existing masterkey or a restricted key system, use the special cylinder and keying requirements field on the order, or order less cylinder and have your locksmith supply the core. Higher security is available by using Primus XP UL 437 listed cylinders in the same chassis.
16) I need an electrified lever on this opening instead of a mechanical one. What are my options?
The ND60 with XN12-001 is a mechanical lock, not electronic. The ND platform does carry four electrified functions that auto-detect 12 or 24V DC, draw a maximum 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding, and comply with A156.25 for indoor use, and the ND mechanical chassis is the foundation for both the wired electrified and the NDE wireless electronic lock, so all of them share the same ANSI 161 prep. Cross-brand, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever at 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches.
17) Does the Schlage ND60 come with the latch and strike, or do I order those separately?
Latch and strike are included as standard: the 13-247 deadlatch, 2-3/4 inch backset, square corner faceplate 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches, and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, supplied without a box. If your jamb needs a dust box behind the strike, that is a separate item. With a P cylinder you also get two nickel silver cut keys per lock.
18) Does the Schlage ND60 meet Florida Building Code and Miami-Dade for a hurricane zone entry?
Yes. The ND Series complies with Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami-Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements. That, plus the 3-hour A label UL listing, is what gets it through plan review on a coastal exterior or vestibule opening.
19) I need a non-keyed lever for the second door of the vestibule -- what works alongside a Schlage ND60 XN12-001?
For the companion opening that needs free operation from both sides, the Falcon K101 (FAL-K101-NON-KEYED) is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers, fire rated, covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch thick. The Falcon T101 (FAL-T101-NONKEYED) is another Grade 1 heavy duty passage lever, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 (COR-CL3110-NON-KEYED) is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. All three are non-keyed, so they hold the same Grade 1 duty level as the ND60 with XN12-001 without adding a cylinder to key.
20) Can I use a Grade 2 or Grade 3 lever instead of the Schlage ND60 XN12-001 on a lower traffic vestibule?
The lighter grades change the duty rating, not just the price point. The Hager 2525 (HAG-2525) is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever with a solid brass forged body for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan Artino (CLN-360201) is a Grade 3 entrance leverset. The ND60 with XN12-001 is Grade 1 heavy duty and carries the vestibule function with a closed outside lever; the Grade 2 and Grade 3 entrance levers above are keyed entry functions with an operating outside lever, so they do not reproduce the closed outside lever arrangement regardless of grade.
21) What is the difference between the ND60 vestibule lever and a dummy lever like the BEST 9K 1DT?
The BEST 9K 1DT (BES-9K-1DT-NONKEYED) is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy trim -- a lever fixed to the door face with no chassis and no latch behind it. The Accentra 455LN Augusta (YAL-AU-455LN) is the same idea in Grade 1 5400 Series trim. On the ND60 with XN12-001, the outside lever is closed but the lock is a full cylindrical chassis with a 13-247 deadlatch and a 10-025 ANSI strike, and the inside lever operates for egress. If the opening needs a latching door with a fixed outside face, a dummy trim will not hold the door; if you only need matching trim on an inactive leaf, the dummy is the right part.
22) For a door on a thicker than standard slab, what lever should I look at instead?
The Schlage ND60 with XN12-001 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. Where the slab falls outside that, the Falcon K101 (FAL-K101-NON-KEYED) covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch in a Grade 1 passage function, the Dexter C1000 Asylum (DEX-C1000-ASYL) covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch in Grade 1, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch in Grade 1 passage. Confirm the slab thickness before ordering, since the ND60 latch and strike combination is specified for the 1-3/4 inch door.
23) Is a privacy lock an acceptable substitute for a vestibule lever on a restroom vestibule door?
They do different jobs. The Arrow MK02-TA is a privacy/bed/bath function lock with a tudor knob, fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 lock with a Withnell lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors. A privacy lock is locked from inside by the occupant with an emergency release outside. The ND60 with XN12-001 is a keyed vestibule lock -- the outside lever is closed at all times and the inside lever is always unlocked for immediate egress, with no occupant-controlled locking. Use privacy on the stall or single occupancy room and the vestibule function on the pass-through door.
24) What should I specify for a classroom or institutional opening rather than a vestibule function?
The Dexter C1000 Classroom (DEX-C1000-CLRM) is a Grade 1 clutching keyed classroom lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Dexter C1000 Classroom Security (DEX-C1000-CSEC) is the Grade 1 classroom security version in the same thickness range. The Cal-Royal AG03 is a classroom lever in the AG Series with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different on a 2-3/4 inch backset, matching the 2-3/4 inch backset the ND60 latch uses. The vestibule function on the ND60 with XN12-001 keeps the outside lever closed permanently, which is a different intent from a classroom lock where the outside lever is locked and unlocked by key.
25) What is the Schlage ND60 lock body made of, and will a satin chrome finish hold up in a hospital or school corridor?
Zinc and steel construction, heavy duty. For healthcare or any high-touch corridor, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial is one of the ten finish choices alongside standard 626 satin chrome; the rest run 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome and 643E aged bronze. Durability on the mechanism side is 16 million cycles with near zero droop and no set screws or O-rings propping the lever.
26) Can I add Vandlgard to the ND60 vestibule lock to stop people hanging on the lever?
Vandlgard lets the lever rotate freely up and down when locked, so force applied to the lever never reaches the chassis, and it is offered on most keyed functions in the ND line. On the XN12-001 configuration the outside lever is already closed and fixed, which addresses the same abuse in a different way, so Vandlgard is the answer where you want a working outside lever that shrugs off abuse rather than a closed one.
27) We are converting a vestibule to keypad entry -- what replaces a keyed vestibule lever?
If the goal is code entry rather than a key, the Delaney LP250 (DLY-LP250) is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with double combination in passage function for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Emtek Classic Keypad Leverset is a keypad lever in the Classic series. The ND60 with XN12-001 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock with a closed outside lever, so the trade is a lever you operate by code on the outside face instead of an outside face that does not operate at all.
28) Do I need an adapter to run Schlage keys on another brand of lever?
On Yale and Accentra cylindrical hardware, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit that lets Schlage format cylinders go into that hardware. The Schlage ND60 with XN12-001 takes an S123 cylinder and keyway directly with no adapter, and can be ordered less cylinder if a locksmith is supplying the cylinder from an existing system. Confirm the cylinder format on the receiving hardware before ordering an adapter kit.
