Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND72-RHO-626-XN12-002 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND72 communicating function actually do on a door?
The ND72 is a double cylinder communicating lock: a key in either lever locks and unlocks that same lever, so each side is controlled independently by its own key. It carries ANSI F80. Schlage cautions that double cylinder locks on residences, or on any door used for egress, are a life safety hazard in an emergency and are not recommended; install only where existing codes permit. Typical use is a connecting door between two spaces where each side wants its own control.
2) Will the ND72 fit my existing door prep and latch into the strike that's already there?
The ND72 uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation shared across the whole ND Series, and it ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate. The standard strike is the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, no box. If your frame is prepped for an ANSI strike and your door is bored 161 on a 2-3/4 backset, it drops in. Doors bored on the 2-3/8 inch backset common in residential work will not line up.
3) What door thickness does the Schlage ND72 lever lock work on?
Standard build is for a 1-3/4 inch door, the usual commercial thickness. Anything thinner or thicker than that is outside the standard configuration.
4) Do I need to order the ND72 handed for a left or right hand door?
No handing to specify. The ND72 is non-handed, so one part number covers left and right hand openings and you are not stuck with the wrong lock if the door swing on the drawing turns out backwards.
5) What do I have to specify when ordering the ND72, and does it come with keys?
Three decisions. Cylinder type: P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway (standard), L less cylinder, or J less FSIC cylinder. Keying: KD keyed different (standard) or KA keyed alike if you want a group of locks on one key, and None if you picked a less-cylinder option. Then lever and finish. With a P cylinder you get two nickel silver cut keys per lock. If your building runs an existing master or restricted system, order less cylinder and pin your own.
6) Can I use the ND72 on a fire rated door?
Yes. All ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and for 8 ft x 8 ft pair doors at 3 hours or 8 ft x 10 ft pairs at 90 minutes with the 3/4 inch latch option. Note the double cylinder function itself: on any door in an egress path, Schlage advises against double cylinder locking regardless of the fire label, so confirm the opening is not an egress door before you spec ND72 there.
7) Will the Schlage ND72 work with my existing keyway, or can I key it into the building master?
Standard cylinder is the conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway, and the lock is built for the S123 cylinder and keyway spec. Multiple key systems are available (open, patented and restricted), and three spring cage sets support all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive formats, so non-Schlage cylinders can be accommodated. Order keyed alike to put a group of doors on one key, or order less cylinder or less FSIC and drop in cylinders from your existing system. Note that the beyond-Grade-1 strength numbers apply with Schlage cylinders; with non-Schlage cylinders the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but performance may be lower.
8) What is the closest Grade 1 cylindrical lever equivalent to the Schlage ND72 communicating lock from another manufacturer?
The ND72 with XN12-002 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with a communicating function, where a key in either lever locks and unlocks its own lever. Among comparable Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 in the CL3100 Series is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever lock, but it is a passage/closet function with no key control at all. The Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 Entry/Office lever is keyed and clutching, but its function is entry/office rather than communicating. If the opening genuinely needs key control from both sides on independent levers, the ND72 with XN12-002 is the one holding that function.
9) The double cylinder function is a problem on our egress door - what lever lock should we use instead?
A double cylinder lock on any door used for egress is a life safety hazard in an emergency and is not recommended. For a Grade 1 cylindrical lever on an egress opening that still needs key control on the secure side only, the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 Entry/Office cylindrical lever is keyed and clutching, and the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 Classroom lever is keyed with the same clutching design. Both put the key on one side and leave the inside lever free. Where no keying is needed at all, the Falcon K101 K Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers and a fire rating.
10) Is a storeroom or classroom lever the same thing as the ND72 communicating lock?
No. The ND72 with XN12-002 carries ANSI function F80, communicating, where a key in either lever locks and unlocks that same lever independently. A storeroom lever such as the Hager 2580 Grade 2 with the Withnell lever, or the Cal-Royal AG05 Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt, keeps the outside lever always locked and the inside lever always free. A classroom lever such as the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 clutching classroom lock keys the outside lever only. Neither arrangement gives each side its own independent key control, which is what defines the communicating function.
11) We standardize on Schlage C keyway - which non-Schlage levers key into the same system?
The ND72 with XN12-002 uses the S123 cylinder and keyway, and the conventional 6-pin cylinder option is Schlage C keyway. Among comparable levers, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever is a Grade 2 lock with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/8 inch backset, and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever in the AG Series uses the 6-pin Schlage C keyway with a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock uses a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway with a ball knob rather than a lever. Note the ND72 standard latch is a 13-247 deadlatch at 2-3/4 inch backset, so an AG00 at 2-3/8 inch backset would need a different door prep.
12) Our door is thicker than 1-3/4 inch - which comparable lever covers that range?
The ND72 with XN12-002 is furnished for a 1-3/4 inch door. Where the opening runs thicker, the Falcon K101 K Series Grade 1 heavy duty passage lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 asylum lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. All three are Grade 1 like the ND72, though none carries the communicating function.
13) We are replacing Yale hardware but want to keep our Schlage keys - is there an adapter rather than a whole new lock?
The ND72 with XN12-002 uses the S123 cylinder and keyway and is offered less cylinder or less FSIC cylinder so an existing key system can be carried in. If the existing hardware is Yale and staying in the door, the Accentra 107S is a Grade 1 Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which brings Schlage cylinders into that hardware instead of replacing the lock. Choose the adapter when the Yale chassis is sound and only the keying needs to unify; choose the ND72 when the opening itself needs the communicating function.
14) Which lever styles and finishes can I get the Schlage ND72 in?
Nine lever designs: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Ten finishes: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. Both sides of the door get the same lever, rose and finish. If you are matching healthcare or food service spec, 626AM is the antimicrobial option.
15) Is the Schlage ND72 ADA compliant for a lever on an accessible opening?
Lever operated and stated to meet ADA requirements, plus ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. For California Fire Code, the levers with a 1/2 inch or shorter return to door comply: Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. Pick from that group if CFC return-to-door is on your spec.
16) Is a Grade 1 cylindrical lock like the ND72 worth it over a Grade 2 lever for a high traffic building?
Grade 1, heavy duty, and tested well past the standard: 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque, 1,600 lbs offset lever pull against pry bar attack, 100 vertical lever impacts, and 16 million cycles with near zero lever droop or wobble and no set screws or O-rings holding it together. That last number is what matters on a corridor or entry that gets thousands of pulls a week. For a low traffic interior door a Grade 2 lever such as the Falcon B101 passage lock is the cheaper class of product, and Falcon's K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty alternative if you want Grade 1 without the ND chassis.
17) I need a keyed cylindrical lever but not the double cylinder communicating function. What else is there?
Within the ND Series the keyed functions include ND50 entrance/office (ANSI F82), ND53 entrance (F109), ND70 classroom (F84) and ND80 storeroom (F86), so if you want a single-cylinder keyed lever the ND80 or ND50 is the usual pick over ND72. From other brands ZenSupply carries, the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 line covers entry/office, classroom and classroom security functions on 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and Corbin Russwin's CL3300 Series covers Grade 1 cylindrical for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Only go ND72 if you genuinely need each side keyed separately.
18) Can I swap an ND72 into an opening where another ND Series lock is already installed?
Yes. Every ND Series lock, including the electronic and ligature resistant trim versions, uses the same cylindrical ANSI 161 prep, so they are interchangeable in the door. Swapping an ND80 storeroom for an ND72 communicating, or the reverse, means changing the lock, not the door. That also means you can standardize a facility on ND prep now and change functions later without redrilling.
19) Does the Schlage ND72 meet Buy American requirements for a government job?
The ND Series meets the Buy American Act and Federal specification FF-H-106C Series 161, along with ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 certification. That combination is what most federal and public agency hardware schedules ask for on a cylindrical lever.
20) Will the ND72 match the exit devices and other hardware already in my building?
The ND Series suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and is designed to match the Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks. So if you have ALX on the lower traffic doors and Von Duprin on the exits, an ND lever keeps the lever and rose look consistent across the openings. Same lever, rose and finish are used on both sides of the ND72 door.
21) We need a lighter duty keyed lever for interior office doors instead of the ND72 - what are the options?
The ND72 with XN12-002 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever built to the ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1 standard for high traffic commercial openings. For interior offices that do not carry that traffic, the Falcon B511CP6D is a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever with an entry/office function, and the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle covering doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors. None of these carry a communicating function - they key one side.
22) What do I order for the inactive leaf or a door that only needs a pull, if the ND72 is on the active door?
The ND72 with XN12-002 is a keyed communicating lever with a working latch and strike. For an opening beside it that needs matching trim but no latching, the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed single dummy trim cylindrical lever, and the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty single dummy equivalent. The Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever in the 5400 Series. Dummy trim mounts as a surface pull with no chassis, so it does not use the ANSI 161 bore the ND72 requires.
23) Can I use a Grade 1 passage lever on the same corridor as the ND72 and keep the same duty rating?
Yes, if the opening does not need key control. The ND72 with XN12-002 is Grade 1 heavy duty. The Falcon T101 T Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lever with pressure release technology, and the Falcon K101 K Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage lock with non-handed levers, a fire rating, and a 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch door thickness range. The Design Hardware X75 X Series is a Grade 1 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors, matching the 1-3/4 inch door thickness the ND72 is furnished for.
24) Is a keypad or electronic leverset an alternative to the ND72 for a door between two suites?
They solve a different problem. The ND72 with XN12-002 is a non-electronic mechanical lock with two nickel silver cut keys per lock and independent key control on each lever. The Delaney LP250 in the LP250 Series is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Emtek Classic Keypad Leverset is a code-entry lever in the Classic series, and the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination in a passage function covering 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch doors. Keypad entry replaces keys with codes, so a facility keying two sides of a communicating door into an existing Schlage master system would not carry that keying across to any of them.
25) We need a lever for a patient room or holding door instead of a communicating lock - what is comparable?
The ND72 with XN12-002 is a Grade 1 commercial cylindrical lever with a communicating function. For asylum and institutional openings, the Dexter C1000 Series Grade 1 asylum lock is ANSI F87 and covers doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 heavy duty asylum lock with a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway and a ball knob rather than a lever. The Dexter keeps the Grade 1 rating and the lever trim; the Arrow changes both the grade and the handle style.
26) Are residential-grade levers an acceptable substitute for the ND72 in an apartment building?
They serve different traffic. The ND72 with XN12-002 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque and cycle tested to over 16 million cycles. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever and the Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy lever are Grade 3 sets for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Callan Artino is a Grade 3 entrance leverset. Grade 3 sets are built for residential interior duty; in a common corridor or a unit entry seeing constant turnover, the ND72 is the one carrying the Grade 1 rating.
27) What is the ND72 made of, and will it hold up outdoors or in a wet area?
Zinc and steel construction, rated commercial and heavy duty. It is a mechanical lock with no electronics. Schlage also states the ND Series complies with Florida Building Code (ASTM E330, E1886, E1996) and Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements, which is the spec that matters on coastal openings.
