Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:
  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Schlage ND25x70-RHO-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND25x70 classroom exit lock actually do? Can someone lock the door from the hallway?
No key access from the corridor at all. The ND25x70 has a blank plate on the outside, so there is no outside lever and no outside keyway. The key works only from the inside lever, and it locks or unlocks that inside lever. Anyone inside can always get out. It has to be ordered specified per XN12-004.
2) Will the Schlage ND25x70 fit the ANSI 161 prep already cut in my door?
Yes. All ND Series locks, including the electronic and ligature-resistant trim versions, use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, so they drop into existing standard cylindrical prep. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4 inches, the latch is a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, and the strike is a 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip. If your existing prep is a 2-3/8 inch backset, that is the number to check before you order.
3) Can I put a Schlage ND25x70 on a labeled fire door?
Yes. ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and 8 ft x 8 ft pairs; 90 minute pairs up to 8 ft x 10 ft are covered with the 3/4 inch latch option. They also meet ADA and comply with ICC A117.1.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage ND25x70?
Four things. Cylinder: P conventional 6-pin in the Schlage C keyway (standard), L less cylinder, or J less FSIC cylinder. Keying: KD keyed different (standard), KA keyed alike if you want several doors on one key, or none if you picked a less-cylinder option. Lever design: Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta or Tubular. Finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial, or 643E aged bronze. With a P cylinder you get two nickel silver cut keys per lock. And it must be specified per XN12-004.
5) Will the Schlage ND25x70 work on our existing Schlage C keyway master key system?
Yes, if you order the P conventional 6-pin cylinder, which is the Schlage C keyway and the standard build. If your keying is handled by a locksmith or you are running an SFIC or FSIC system, order it L (less cylinder) or J (less FSIC cylinder) and install your own core. The lock accepts Schlage conventional, FSIC and SFIC cylinders, and three spring cage sets cover all Schlage plus eight competitive cylinder formats.
6) Should I use a classroom exit lock or a regular classroom lock on a school door?
Depends on who you want to be able to lock the room. A classroom exit lock like the ND25x70 has no outside trim to key at all, so the door is locked and unlocked only from inside the room, by key. The conventional classroom function, ND70 (ANSI F84), has a keyed outside lever, so it is locked and unlocked from the corridor side. Pick the exit lock when the teacher must be able to secure the room from inside without stepping into the hall; pick ND70 when the building wants control from the corridor. Both share the same ANSI 161 prep, so you can change your mind later without redrilling.
7) Does the Schlage ND25x70 comply with California fire code lever return requirements?
That depends on which lever you pick. All levers with a return to the door of 1/2 inch (64 mm) or less comply, and Schlage names those as Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. If the job is in California, order one of those six rather than Athens, Broadway or Latitude. ND Series also meets the Buy American Act and the federal FF-H-106C Series 161 spec, and complies with Florida Building Code (ASTM E330, E1886, E1996) and Miami Dade (TAS 201, 202, 203) hurricane requirements.
8) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Schlage ND25x70 classroom exit lock?
The Schlage ND25x70 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with a classroom function, blank plate outside, and the key locking or unlocking the inside lever. The nearest cross-brand peer is the Dexter C1000 Series classroom cylindrical lever lock, which is also Grade 1 with a classroom function and a clutching keyed lever, on doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick. The Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever is a lighter-grade alternative with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, which matches the 2-3/4 inch backset of the ND25x70 standard 13-247 deadlatch.
9) Which locks match the ND25x70 keyway if I want the whole building on one key system?
The ND25x70 uses the Schlage S123 keyway family, with a conventional 6-pin Schlage C keyway cylinder as the standard cylinder option and keyed different or keyed alike available. Cross-brand, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever and AG03 classroom lever both come with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum cylindrical lock uses a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. The Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit for Yale hardware, which is the route when Yale-prepped doors need to accept a Schlage cylinder.
10) Is the Schlage ND25x70 handed? Do I need to know which way the door swings before ordering?
Non-handed. One lock covers left and right hand doors, so you can stock a single part number across a building and not sort by swing.
11) Is a Schlage ND Series lock strong enough for a high traffic school or hospital corridor?
It is built well past the Grade 1 minimum. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, the ND resists 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque (2.6x the BHMA requirement), 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack, and 100 hammer blows. Cycle life is a minimum 16 million cycles with no visible lever sag, and it gets there without set screws or O-rings. Body is zinc and steel. Those numbers apply with Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC, SFIC); with a non-Schlage cylinder it still exceeds Grade 1 but performance may be lower.
12) Will the Schlage ND25x70 match the other hardware in our building?
The ND Series suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it is matched to the Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks, so you can run the same lever design and finish across heavy traffic and lighter openings. Nine lever designs and ten finishes, including 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial for healthcare, mean you can hold one look across a whole facility.
13) Does the Schlage ND25x70 come with the latch and strike, or do I order those separately?
Both are included as the default build: a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, and a 10-025 ANSI strike measuring 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, supplied without a box. If your frame needs a box strike or a different lip length to clear the trim, that is a substitution to make at order time.
14) Is there a cheaper classroom lever than the Schlage ND if the opening is not high traffic?
The Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different and a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it drops onto the same backset the ND uses and takes the same keyway family. That keeps it on an existing Schlage C key system. It is a Grade 2 chassis, so it is a lighter duty answer for a low traffic opening, not a substitute on a corridor door running heavy cycles.
15) Can I get a Schlage ND25x70 keyed alike with the other locks I am buying?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: KD keyed different is standard, KA keyed alike puts multiple locks on one key. Order KA when a maintenance staff or a department needs a single key across several rooms. There is also a free-text field for special cylinder or keying requirements if you are matching an existing master key system.
16) Is there a lighter-duty classroom or storeroom lever that can replace an ND25x70 on a low-traffic door?
The ND25x70 is a heavy duty Grade 1 lock. Where a lighter chassis suits the opening, the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Both hold the outside lever fixed and are keyed, so they differ from the ND25x70 in that they present a keyed outside lever rather than a blank outside plate.
17) What Grade 1 lever should go on the corridor doors that do not need a key, alongside ND25x70 classroom exit locks?
The ND25x70 is keyed with a single cylinder and two keys per lock. For openings in the same building that need no key, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty passage cylindrical lock with non-handed levers for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch and carries a fire rating, and the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant passage/closet lever for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, also fire rated. Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors. Like the ND25x70, these are non-handed in application.
18) Will an Emtek or Baldwin lever work as a substitute for an ND25x70?
No. The ND25x70 is a keyed Grade 1 commercial cylindrical classroom lock. The Baldwin Estate 5103 is offered in passage, privacy, and half dummy functions, and the Emtek Classic and Arts and Crafts leversets listed are dummy pairs, which have no latch and no cylinder. Those are decorative trim functions, so none of them will key or latch a classroom door the way the ND25x70 does.
19) What is the difference between the ND25x70 and a Grade 1 entry/office lever like the Dexter C1000 entry?
The ND25x70 has a blank plate on the outside, so there is no outside trim to operate and the key controls the inside lever. The Dexter C1000 Series entry/office cylindrical lever lock is a Grade 1 clutching keyed lever with an entrance/office function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, which means an operating outside lever that can be locked and unlocked for office use. The Falcon B511CP6D covers the same entry/office function as a Grade 2 medium duty cylindrical lever.
20) For a patient room or detention-type opening, is the ND25x70 the right lever or is an asylum function better?
The ND25x70 carries a classroom function, keyed on the inside lever with a blank outside plate. Where the opening calls for an asylum or institutional function instead, the Dexter C1000 Series asylum lock is Grade 1 with the F87 asylum function for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a heavy duty asylum/institution/utility cylindrical lock with a ball knob rather than a lever.
21) Can a keypad or electronic lever replace an ND25x70 classroom exit lock?
The ND25x70 is a mechanical lock with no electronics, keyed with a conventional 6-pin Schlage C cylinder. Codeless access is a different approach: the Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination for doors 1-1/8 inch to 2 inch in a passage function, and the Emtek Classic keypad leverset is a residential-style keypad option. These operate on a code rather than the ND25x70 key-controlled inside lever, so an existing Schlage key system would not carry over to them.
22) The ND25x70 is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door. What Grade 1 lever covers a thicker door?
The ND25x70 ships for a 1-3/4 inch door thickness with the 13-247 deadlatch at a 2-3/4 inch backset. Where the leaf is thicker, the Falcon K101 Grade 1 passage lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 covers 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Dexter C1000 asylum lock covers 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. Those are different functions than a classroom exit lock, so match the function to the opening as well as the thickness.
23) Is a Kwikset or Callan residential lever an acceptable substitute for an ND25x70?
The ND25x70 is a commercial heavy duty Grade 1 lock. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever and 300BRNL Breton privacy lever are Grade 3 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Callan Artino entrance leverset and Asheville passage leverset are Grade 3 as well. Those sit two grades below the ND25x70 and are offered in passage, privacy, and entrance functions rather than a keyed classroom function.
24) Is the Schlage ND25x70 an electronic or access control lock?
No, it is a mechanical key-operated cylindrical lever lock, not electronic. It is the same chassis platform the wired electrified ND and the NDE wireless electronic locks are built on, and they all share the ANSI 161 prep, so a mechanical ND installed today can be swapped for an electrified or wireless version later without changing the door prep.
25) What matching dummy lever pairs with a Grade 1 cylindrical classroom lever like the ND25x70 on an inactive leaf?
For the inactive leaf of a pair where the active leaf carries a Grade 1 cylindrical lever such as the ND25x70, the BEST 9K Series 1DT single dummy trim is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed cylindrical lever dummy, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever from the 5400 Series. The BEST 7KC Series single dummy trim is the Grade 2 medium duty version of the same idea.
26) If the classroom door gets an exit device instead of a cylindrical lock, what lever trim goes with it?
An ND25x70 is a bored cylindrical lever lock installed in the door itself. When the opening moves to a pushpad exit device, the trim is what carries the lever: the Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device tied to the CL3300 cylindrical lock series for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Imperial USA ED-EL500HD is a heavy duty escutcheon lever trim in an entry function.
