Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND93PD RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND93 vestibule function actually do, and is it safe on an egress door?
On the ND93, the outside lever is dead until it's enabled by the key in the inside lever; once enabled, the key from outside retracts the latch. The inside lever is always free, so anyone inside gets out in one motion. That's the classic vestibule setup for a lobby or airlock where building staff control who can come in from outside. The one caution worth stating plainly: this is a double cylinder lock, and Schlage does not recommend double cylinder locks on residences or on any door used for egress in any structure. Install only where existing code permits it.
2) Will a Schlage ND93 fit my 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
That's exactly the prep the ND93 is built for. It ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, and the stated door thickness is 1-3/4 inches, the standard commercial door. The chassis uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, which is what most existing commercial cylindrical locks are bored for, so it drops into an existing 161 prep without new boring.
3) Do I need to specify handing when I order a Schlage ND93 lever lock?
No handing to call out. The ND93 is non-handed, so the same lock works on a left or right hand door and you don't have to survey the opening before ordering. Both sides get the same lever, rose and finish with the matching latch and strike.
4) Will the ND93 latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
Depends what's in there now. The ND93 comes with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip length and no box. If your frame is already prepped for an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike, that's a straight swap. If you're replacing a lock that used a small T-strike or a round corner strike, the frame cutout won't match the 4-7/8 inch ANSI plate and you'll need to either reuse the existing strike or modify the frame. Also check your lip: 1-3/16 inch suits a typical frame reveal, but a deep reveal or an applied stop wants a longer lip.
5) What cylinder and keying options do I have to specify when ordering a Schlage ND93?
Three cylinder choices. Standard is P, a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway. Order L (less cylinder) if you're supplying a conventional cylinder yourself, or J (less FSIC cylinder) if you're building it into a full-size interchangeable core system. Keying is keyed different by default, or keyed alike if you want a batch of openings on one key, and there's a free-text field for a specific bitting, master key system or restricted keyway request. Remember the ND93 takes two cylinders, one each side. With the P cylinder you get two nickel silver cut keys per lock.
6) Is the Schlage ND93 approved for a fire rated door?
It is UL and cUL listed. The ND Series is listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft by 10 ft, and for pair doors at 3 hour up to 8 ft by 8 ft or 90 minute up to 8 ft by 10 ft, both pair listings requiring the 3/4 inch latch option. For ADA work the lock meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1; if a California fire code job is in play, only levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, which covers Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk.
7) Should I use an ND93 vestibule lock or a storeroom lock on my building entry?
Different jobs. The ND93 is for a vestibule or airlock where the inner door's key controls whether the outer lever works at all: outside lever dead until keyed on from the inside lever, inside always free. If all you want is a door that stays locked outside and is opened by key every time, the ND80 storeroom function (ANSI F86) is the simpler choice and it uses one cylinder instead of two, which matters given the caution against double cylinder locks on egress doors. For an office suite door where staff want to leave it unlocked during business hours, look at the ND50 entrance/office (F82) or ND53 entrance (F109) instead. All of them share the ANSI 161 prep and the same trim, so the decision is function, not fit.
8) My doors are 2 inches thick. Will a Schlage ND93 work?
No. The ND93's stated door thickness is 1-3/4 inches, so a 2 inch door is outside it. For thicker leaves ZenSupply carries options with published ranges that reach 2 inches or beyond: the Falcon K101 Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lock covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, the Corbin Russwin CL3100 Series Grade 1 vandal resistant lever covers 1-3/4 to 2 inches, and the Dexter C1000 asylum function covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches. None of those is a vestibule function, so if the double-cylinder vestibule operation is the requirement rather than the thickness, measure the leaf again before you order.
9) What is the closest Grade 1 cylindrical lever alternative to the Schlage ND93 for a vestibule opening?
The ND93 is a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock with a vestibule function - the outside lever is disengaged by key in the inside lever, and the latch is then retracted by key from outside, with the inside lever always unlocked for immediate egress. No other Grade 1 cylindrical lever in the comparable set is built as a vestibule double-cylinder function. The nearest Grade 1 cylindrical levers available under other brands are the Corbin Russwin CL3110 in passage/closet function, the Falcon K101 and Falcon T101 in passage function, the Dexter C1000 in classroom, classroom security, entry/office and asylum functions, and the Design Hardware X75 in passage. Those are single-function keyed or non-keyed locks, so an opening that genuinely needs the vestibule sequence should stay on the ND93.
10) The vestibule double-cylinder function is not allowed on my egress door - what lever should go on that opening instead?
The ND93 is a double cylinder keyed function, and double cylinder locks on any door used for egress are a life safety hazard in an emergency and are not recommended. Where the code official rules the double cylinder out, a single-cylinder Grade 1 lever covers most of the same openings: the Dexter C1000 entry/office function, the Dexter C1000 classroom function, or the Dexter C1000 classroom security function, all Grade 1 cylindrical lever locks with clutching levers. For a storeroom-style opening where the outside lever is always locked, the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever.
11) I am keying a building on Schlage C - which other lever locks take the same keyway as the ND93?
The ND93 ships with a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway on the standard build, with two nickel silver cut keys per lock. Among other brands, the Cal-Royal AG00 entrance lever and the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever are both furnished with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway keyed different, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS asylum lock uses a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway with a ball knob rather than a lever. For Yale and Accentra hardware, the Accentra 107S is a Schlage cylinder adapter kit that lets Schlage-keyed cylinders go into that line.
12) My door is thinner than 1-3/4 inches - which lever lock fits where the Schlage ND93 does not?
The ND93 is built for a 1-3/4 inch door. For thinner doors, the Dexter C1000 in asylum function covers 1-3/8 to 2 inches, the Dexter C1000 classroom, classroom security and entry/office versions cover 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, the Falcon K101 passage lock covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches, and the Hager 2510 passage and 2525 entry locks cover 1-3/8 to 2 inches. The Cal-Royal AG05 storeroom lever and AG00 entrance lever both cover 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches.
13) Can I use my existing non-Schlage cylinders in a Schlage ND93?
Yes within limits. The ND Series uses three spring cage sets that between them support all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive formats, so a lot of existing key systems carry over. One thing to weigh: Schlage's beyond-Grade-1 numbers (3,100 in-lb lever torque, 1,600 lb offset pull) are stated for ND locks with Schlage cylinders only, conventional, FSIC and SFIC. With a non-Schlage cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1, but performance may be below the Schlage-cylinder figures. If you want that, order the L or J option and fit your own core.
14) What is Vandlgard on the Schlage ND93 and does it change how the lock feels when locked?
Vandlgard means the outside lever spins freely up and down when the lock is secured instead of holding rigid. That free rotation keeps a kick or a body weight hanging off the lever from loading the chassis, which is the usual way a lever lock gets destroyed in a school corridor or an apartment lobby. Practical consequence: a locked Vandlgard lever going limp is normal, not a broken lock, which is worth telling your tenants or staff before the service calls start.
15) Is the Schlage ND93 heavy duty enough for a high traffic apartment or school entry?
This is the top of the cylindrical class. The ND93 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial lever lock, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, with the ANSI/BHMA function code F88. Schlage's own testing puts it well past the minimums: 3,100 in-lb of abusive locked lever torque, 1,600 lb offset lever pull, 100 vertical lever impacts, and 16 million cycles with no visible lever sag and no set screws or O-rings holding it together. The body is zinc and steel. For a lobby, corridor or dorm entry that gets hung on daily, that's the right duty level.
16) Which lever styles and finishes can I get on the Schlage ND93 to match the other doors in my building?
Nine lever designs, ten finishes. Levers are Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta and Tubular. Finishes run 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 626AM satin chrome antimicrobial and 643E aged bronze. For healthcare or food service, 626AM is the antimicrobial version of standard satin chrome. Because the whole ND Series shares trim, an ND93 vestibule opening matches the ND80 storerooms and ND70 classrooms down the hall, and the series is suited to Schlage ALX Grade 2 locks and suites with Von Duprin exit devices where the budget drops off on secondary doors.
17) I need a Grade 1 cylindrical lever lock but not the vestibule function. What else does ZenSupply carry?
Plenty, depending on the function you actually need. For keyed Grade 1 cylindrical levers from another brand, the Dexter C1000 Series covers entry/office, classroom, classroom security and asylum functions and lists a 1-3/8 to 2 inch door thickness range on the asylum version, wider than the ND93's single 1-3/4 inch thickness. Corbin Russwin's CL3100 Series gives you a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever, fire rated, for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors, though the CL3110 is passage function, no key. If the door needs to be electrified rather than double keyed, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified lever at 12VAC/DC for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lock with a 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inch thickness range, the widest of the group, for the openings on the same job that don't need keying.
18) Does the Schlage ND93 meet Buy American and hurricane code requirements for a government or Florida job?
Both are covered on the ND Series. It meets the Buy American Act and the federal FF-H-106C Series 161 spec, which is what usually appears on government submittals. For coastal work it complies with the Florida Building Code under ASTM E330, E1886 and E1996, and with Miami Dade TAS 201, 202 and 203 hurricane requirements. The ND93 itself carries ANSI/BHMA function code F88 if the spec calls out the function by number.
19) Is there a lighter-duty keyed lever I can use instead of the Schlage ND93 on low-traffic interior doors?
The ND93 is a heavy duty Grade 1 cylindrical lock. Where the traffic does not justify Grade 1, the Grade 2 keyed cylindrical levers include the Cal-Royal AG05 storeroom lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt, the Cal-Royal AG03 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and 2-3/4 inch backset, the Hager 2525 entry lock, the Hager 2580 storeroom lock, and the Falcon B511CP6D entry/office lever. The Cal-Royal AG03 shares the ND93's 2-3/4 inch backset, so it drops into the same latch prep. None of them provide the vestibule sequence.
20) I need a vandal-resistant lever on a Grade 1 opening but the door does not need to lock - what pairs with the ND93?
The ND93 carries Schlage Vandlgard trim, where the lever freely rotates up and down when locked so force on the lever does not reach the chassis. On an opening that only needs a latch and no keying, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal-resistant cylindrical lever lock in passage/closet function, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick. The Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lever using pressure release technology, and the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-handed passage lock, fire rated, for doors 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches.
21) Can a Baldwin, Emtek, or Kwikset lever be used in place of the Schlage ND93 on a commercial vestibule door?
No. The ND93 is a commercial Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lever with a keyed vestibule function. The Baldwin Estate 5103 is offered in passage, privacy and half dummy versions, the Emtek Classic and Arts and Crafts leversets in the set are dummy pairs and a keypad leverset, and the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage and 300BRNL Breton privacy levers are Grade 3. Those are residential-style or non-keyed trim and none of them carry the vestibule function or the Grade 1 rating, so they are not substitutes on a commercial vestibule opening.
22) What is the difference between the Schlage ND93 and a Grade 1 dummy or passage lever that looks the same on the door?
The ND93 is keyed, with a double cylinder vestibule function and two keys supplied per lock. A dummy trim has no chassis and no latch at all: the BEST 9K Series 1DT is a Grade 1 heavy duty non-keyed single dummy trim cylindrical lever, the BEST 7KC Series 1DT is the Grade 2 medium duty equivalent, and the Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever. A passage lever latches but never locks - the Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors. From the corridor these can look identical to the ND93, so match on function rather than on the lever shape.
23) The opening needs access control release, not a mechanical key - is there an electrified Grade 1 cylindrical lever alternative to the ND93?
The ND93 is a mechanical lock with no electrified option in its build. For a door tied to an access control system, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock operating on 12VAC/DC for doors 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick, offered with an NZ lever and D rose. Fail safe unlocks on loss of power, which is a different security posture from the ND93's key-only operation, so confirm which state the opening requires before switching.
24) I need a knob instead of a lever on a keyed commercial opening - what replaces the ND93?
The ND93 uses a lever handle, non-handed. Where a knob is specified or the existing hardware is knob trim, the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a heavy duty asylum function cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional Schlage C keyway cylinder, and the Arrow HK11-BB is a turn-pushbutton entrance cylindrical lock with a ball knob and conventional cylinder for doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches. Knob trim does not meet ADA operation, which the ND93 lever does, so check the occupancy before specifying a knob.
25) Can I upgrade a Schlage ND93 to high security keying later?
Yes, and without touching the chassis. High security locking comes from the cylinder: the ND Series achieves it with Primus XP cylinders, which are UL 437 listed. Since the ND93 takes two cylinders, plan on a pair per opening if you're going that route. Order the lock with the P conventional cylinder now and swap cylinders later, or order L (less cylinder) and supply the high security cores at install.
26) Is the Schlage ND93 an electronic or electrified lock?
Neither. The ND93 is a purely mechanical cylindrical lever lock, no wiring, no credentials, no power at the door. If the opening needs access control, the ND Series has four electrified functions that auto-detect 12 or 24V DC operation, draw a maximum of 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding current, and avoid heated levers, plus the NDE wireless electronic lock built on the same mechanical chassis. All of it shares the ANSI 161 prep, so a mechanical ND93 today can become an electrified or wireless ND opening later without redoing the door.
27) Our openings need keyless code entry rather than the ND93's key-operated vestibule function - what covers that?
The ND93 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock operated by key on both sides. Where the building wants code entry instead of keys, the Lockey 1150 is a heavy duty mechanical keypad lever set with a double combination in passage function for doors 1-1/8 to 2 inches thick, needing no power or wiring. The Delaney LP250 is a Grade 2 electronic keypad leverlock, and Emtek offers a Classic keypad leverset. None of these reproduce the vestibule sequence where the inside lever key disengages the outside lever.
