ND170 - SINGLE DUMMY TRIM LOCK

Dummy trim for one side of door. Used for door pull or as matching inactive trim.

Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but we continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND170 RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Schlage ND170 actually do - is it a working lock?
No latch, no keyway, no working mechanism. The ND170 is dummy trim for one side of a door: a fixed lever you pull on. It's used as a door pull, or as the inactive-side trim that matches the operating lever on the rest of the opening. If you need the door to latch, you want a passage, privacy, or keyed function instead.
2) Will the Schlage ND170 dummy lever match the other ND locks on my building's doors?
That's what it's for. The ND170 comes in the same nine lever designs (Athens, Boardwalk, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Omega, Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular) and the same ten finishes (605, 606, 612, 613, 619, 622, 625, 626, 626AM, 643E) as the rest of the ND Series, so the inactive leaf reads identical to the working leaf. Order the same lever style and finish code you already have on the opening.
3) Do I need to worry about handing when ordering a Schlage ND170 dummy lever?
No. The ND170 is non-handed, so one part works on a left- or right-hand door. Pick the lever design and finish; there's no LH/RH to specify.
4) Does a Schlage ND170 dummy lever need the same door prep as a regular cylindrical lock?
All ND Series locks use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, which makes them interchangeable across the series. Backset is 2-3/4 inches. So an existing ND opening takes the ND170 without redrilling, and a leaf prepped for a full ND lock can be converted to dummy trim.
5) Should I use a dummy lever or a passage lever on a closet or inactive leaf?
Depends on whether the door has to latch. A dummy like the ND170 is a fixed pull with no latch, right for a closet with a magnetic or roller catch, or the inactive leaf of a pair held by flush bolts. If the door needs to stay shut on a latch and free-turn from both sides, use a passage function instead, such as the Schlage ND10 (ANSI F75).
6) I'm in California - which ND lever styles meet the state fire code return requirement?
Levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply, and Schlage lists those as Rhodes, Sparta, Tubular, Omega, Longitude and Boardwalk. All six are available lever designs on the ND170, so specify one of those (RHO, SPA, TLR, OME, LON, BRK) for a California job. Athens, Broadway and Latitude are not on that compliance list.
7) What is the closest Grade 1 equivalent to the Schlage ND170 single dummy lever trim from another manufacturer?
The BEST 9K Series 1DT is the nearest match: it is a single dummy trim cylindrical lever lock in Grade 1, non-keyed, heavy duty, the same dummy function the ND170 serves as inactive trim or a door pull. The Accentra 455LN Augusta is also a heavy duty Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever lock. All three are dummy function, so none of them latches - they mount lever trim on one face only.
8) The opening needs a lever that actually latches the door - what replaces an ND170?
A dummy lever is the wrong device there. The ND170 is non-keyed dummy trim with no latch behind it. For a Grade 1 latching non-keyed lever, the Falcon K101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lock with non-handed levers and a fire rating, and the Falcon T101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical passage lever lock. The Corbin Russwin CL3110 is a Grade 1 vandal resistant cylindrical lever lock in passage/closet function, fire rated, for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch. The Design Hardware X75 is a Grade 1 passage lever lockset with a flat lever for 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) Does a passage lever work as a substitute for a single dummy lever?
No - they look alike on the door and behave differently. A passage lever such as the Falcon B101, a Grade 2 non-handed cylindrical passage lever lock, or the Accentra 5301LN Augusta Grade 2 passage/closet lever, has a working latch that retracts when the lever is turned. The ND170 is dummy function trim for one side of the door, used as a pull or as matching inactive trim, and it does not operate a latch. On an inactive leaf of a pair, or on the pull side of a door held by a magnet or roller catch, the passage lever adds a latch and strike prep the opening was not built for.
10) We are standardizing a facility on one lever family - which dummy trim matches a Grade 1 keyed lever program?
Match the dummy to the keyed line you are running. The ND170 is the non-keyed Grade 1 cylindrical dummy trim in the Schlage ND Series, whose keyed functions include ND50 entrance/office, ND70 classroom and ND80 storeroom, and all ND Series locks share the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation. If the keyed program is BEST 9K, the 9K Series 1DT is the Grade 1 single dummy in that family. If it is Accentra 5400 Series, the 455LN Augusta is the Grade 1 single dummy there. Dexter C1000 covers Grade 1 keyed functions including classroom, classroom security, entry/office and asylum.
11) Is the Schlage ND170 heavy duty enough for a school or hospital corridor?
It's a Grade 1, heavy duty commercial trim, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000. The ND Series is rated to withstand 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque and 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull, and shows near zero droop after 16 million cycles. On a dummy the lever is fixed rather than operating, so abuse resistance is the point.
12) Is the Schlage ND170 ADA compliant for a lever on an accessible route?
The ND Series meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. The lever shape itself is what does that work, so any of the nine ND lever designs on the ND170 carries it.
13) What's the difference between the Schlage ND170 dummy and the BEST 9K 1DT dummy trim?
Both are Grade 1 heavy duty single dummy cylindrical lever trim, so functionally they do the same job: a fixed lever on one face. The choice is usually about matching what's already in the building. If the rest of the doors are ND Series, take the ND170 so the lever and rose match. If the facility is standardized on BEST 9K, the 9K 1DT is the matching trim. There's also the BEST 7KC 1DT, which is the Grade 2 medium duty version of the same idea for lighter traffic.
14) Can I put a Schlage ND170 on the inactive leaf of a fire-rated pair?
ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3-hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and pair doors at 3 hours up to 8 ft x 8 ft, or 90 minutes up to 8 ft x 10 ft with the 3/4 inch latch option. Note the latch option only applies where an actual latching function is used; the ND170 has no latch, so on a rated pair the leaf still needs the code-required latching or flush bolt hardware alongside it.
15) Is the Schlage ND170 Buy American compliant for a government job?
The ND Series meets the Buy American Act, and also meets Federal specification FF-H-106C Series 161. That covers the usual federal and institutional procurement checks for this trim.
16) I need dummy levers on both faces of a door - is the ND170 the right part?
The ND170 is single dummy trim for one side of the door, so a two-sided opening takes two of them. If a matched pair in one part number suits better, the Emtek Arts and Crafts lever is sold as a dummy pair, as is the Emtek Hammered lever and the Emtek Classic Brass Cortina lever. The ND170 is a Grade 1 commercial cylindrical lever trim, which is the difference to weigh against the convenience of a pair.
17) Is there a lighter duty single dummy lever than the ND170 for low traffic interior openings?
Yes. The BEST 7KC Series 1DT is a single dummy trim cylindrical lever lock in Grade 2, medium duty, non-keyed. The Callan Bentley BN5051 is a Grade 2 dummy lever as well. The ND170 is Grade 1 heavy duty, so the step down is a change in the ANSI/BHMA performance grade the opening is being specified to, not in the function - all three are dummy trim.
18) What is the difference between the Schlage ND170 single dummy and the Baldwin 5103 half dummy lever?
Handing and construction. The Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy comes as a left hand version and a right hand version, ordered separately, on a 5048 rose. The ND170 is a non-handed cylindrical lever trim, so one part number covers either side of the opening and the lever choice is made from designs such as Rhodes, Sparta, Athens and Longitude rather than from a hand.
19) The room needs privacy or entry locking, not a dummy - what do I order instead of the ND170?
The ND170 is non-keyed dummy trim and does not lock. For privacy, the Hager 2540 is a Grade 2 privacy cylindrical lock with a Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch, and the Accentra Grade 2 lines cover the same range of interior functions. For keyed entry, the Hager 2525 is a Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lock with a lever handle for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom lever lockset with a deadlocking latchbolt.
20) Is a Grade 3 residential lever an acceptable stand-in for an ND170 on a commercial door?
They are built to different performance grades. The Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage lever is Grade 3 for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, and the Callan Asheville is a Grade 3 passage leverset. The ND170 is a Grade 1 heavy duty commercial cylindrical lever trim with a 2-3/4 inch backset, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 1. Where a specification or a facility standard calls out Grade 1, the Grade 3 levers do not meet it.
21) Can I use exit device lever trim in place of an ND170 dummy?
No - that is a different device on a different door. The Corbin Russwin 585F715 is a Grade 1 lock lever for the ED8000 pushpad exit device on doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch, and the Imperial USA ED-EL500HD is heavy duty escutcheon lever trim in entry function for an exit device. Both mount to an exit device chassis. The ND170 is cylindrical lever trim on the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, used as a pull or matching inactive trim.
22) What is finish 626AM on the Schlage ND170?
626AM is Satin Chrome Antimicrobial, the antimicrobial version of the standard 626 satin chrome. Healthcare and food service specifiers usually take it on touch surfaces; a dummy lever is a pure touch surface, so it's a common pick there. Standard 626 Satin Chrome is also offered if you don't need the antimicrobial coating.
23) Will the Schlage ND170 lever match Von Duprin exit devices in the same building?
ND Series suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, and it's also matched to Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks. So a corridor running Von Duprin devices on the exit doors and ND trim elsewhere reads as one hardware family. Match the finish code across both.
24) Does the Schlage ND170 need power or wiring?
No. The ND170 is a mechanical dummy trim, not electronic, with no wiring, no voltage and nothing to fail on a power drop. If you want an electrified cylindrical lever on the same ANSI 161 prep, the ND Series has four electrified functions that auto-detect 12/24V DC, but those are separate models.
25) Which dummy lever suits a decorative residential-style opening rather than a commercial one?
The Baldwin Estate 5103 half dummy on a 5048 rose and the Emtek Classic Brass Cortina dummy pair are dummy function levers with decorative trim. The ND170 is a commercial Grade 1 cylindrical dummy trim, offered in nine lever designs including Rhodes, Omega and Boardwalk and in finishes from 605 bright brass through 613 oil rubbed bronze and 622 matte black, so it can be finished to a decorative scheme while holding the commercial grade.
