Schlage ND SERIES OVERVIEW

The Schlage ND Series offers a full breadth of commercial lock options with a suited combination of mechanical, electrified and electronic options. This overview covers common characteristics for the mechanical and electrified lock information.

Beyond grade 1 performance is the hallmark of the mechanical and electrified locks. ND Series locks are tested to withstand 3,100 in-lb. of abusive lever torque - more than 2 1/2 times the Grade 1 standard requirement. Offset lever pull testing up to 1,600 lbs. assures you of the lock's superb resistance against pry bar attacks. More than strong, ND Series is built to last and shows nearly zero droop or wobble after 16 million cycles.

All ND Series locks including electronic and ligature-resistant trim use the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation making them easily interchangeable. They are ideal for all new construction and retrofit applications.

ND Series Mechanical Lock

The ND mechanical lock, along with being Schlage’s best selling mechanical lock, is the foundation for both the wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic lock. Not only did Schlage invent the cylindrical lock, but they continue to make it better with capabilities such as:

  • Unparalleled strength - the lock prevents access even when subjected to torque loads up to 3,100 in-lbs (2.6x BHMA1), withstands pry bar attacks of 1,600 lbs (8x BHMA requirements1), and withstands 100 hammer blows (20x BHMA requirements1, 2)
  • Exceptional durability - cycle tested to over 16M cycles (16x BHMA requirements1) with near zero droop or wobble - without the use of set screws or O-rings
  • Improved feel - improved strength and durability are more than numbers, you can actually feel it in the lock
  • Improved installation - installation is even easier than before (and withoutany set screws or O-rings)

Schlage ND80LD HSLR 630 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage ND80 storeroom function actually work day to day?
The outside lever on the ND80 is always fixed, so entry from the corridor side is by key only. The inside lever is always unlocked, so anyone inside gets out immediately without a key or a thumbturn. That is the ANSI F86 storeroom function, and it is why it gets used on mechanical rooms, janitor closets and stock rooms where the door has to stay locked at all times. A Request to Exit (RX) version is also offered if the door needs to report egress.
2) What is the HSLR ligature resistant trim on this ND80 for?
HSLR is Schlage's high security anti-ligature trim, a sloped lever and rose that does not give a cord or strap anything to catch on. It is specified in behavioral health units, detention holding, correctional intake and school seclusion rooms. Mechanically it is still the same ND cylindrical chassis with the F86 storeroom function, so it uses the standard ANSI 161 door prep like every other ND lock.
3) Will the ND80 drop into the door prep my old cylindrical lock left behind?
If the existing lock used the standard ANSI 161 cylindrical prep, yes. All ND Series locks, including the ligature resistant trim versions, use that common prep, which is why Schlage positions the series for retrofit as well as new construction. The lock ships set up for a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-3/4 inch door, so check those two numbers on the existing opening before you pull the old lock.
4) Do I have to specify handing on the Schlage ND80 with ligature resistant trim?
Yes. The HSLR trim is handed, and the lock is ordered as either LH left hand or RH right hand. Stand outside the door (the key side): if the hinges are on your left it is left hand, hinges on your right is right hand. Order the wrong hand and the sloped ligature resistant lever points the wrong way.
5) Which cylinder options does the ND80 come with, and which one do I pick for an interchangeable core system?
Four cylinder choices. PD is a conventional 6-pin cylinder in the Schlage C keyway, supplied keyed with two nickel silver cut keys. JD is prepped for Schlage full size interchangeable core, less core. BD is prepped for small format interchangeable core (SFIC), less core. LD is less cylinder entirely. If your building runs SFIC cores from your own key system, order BD and install your core. Running Schlage FSIC, order JD. If you just want a working lock out of the box, take PD.
6) Can I get several ND80 storeroom locks keyed alike on one key?
Yes. Keying is a required selection: KD keyed different is standard, KA keyed alike puts multiple locks on the same key, and there is a None choice for the less cylinder and less core options. There is also a key code field if you are matching an existing code in your system. Keyed alike is the usual pick when a maintenance crew needs one key for every storeroom on a property.
7) Is this Schlage ND80 fire door rated and ADA compliant?
The ND Series is UL/cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 ft x 10 ft, and for pairs at 3 hour up to 8 ft x 8 ft and 90 minute up to 8 ft x 10 ft with the 3/4 inch latch option. It is certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, meets ADA requirements, complies with ICC A117.1, and meets the Buy American Act plus federal FF-H-106C Series 161.
8) What latch and strike ship with the ND80, and will they match my existing frame cutout?
It comes with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate, and the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 x 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip and no box. That strike matches the standard ANSI frame prep on most commercial hollow metal frames. If your frame has round corner prep or a T-strike, you will need a different strike; if your door is bored on a 2-3/8 inch backset, the supplied latch will not reach.
9) What is a Grade 2 storeroom lever alternative to the Schlage ND80 for lighter-traffic doors?
Two Grade 2 cylindrical storeroom levers cover that role. The Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom leverset with a deadlocking latchbolt for doors 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch thick, and the Hager 2580 is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock with the Withnell lever for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick. The Schlage ND80 is an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1, heavy duty storeroom lock, so the difference is the certified grade and duty level rather than the lock function - all three keep the outside lever fixed with key entry only.
10) I need an asylum or utility function instead of storeroom - what should I look at?
The Schlage ND80 is a storeroom function lock, ANSI F86, with the outside lever fixed and entry by key only while the inside lever is always free for egress. If you need key operation on both sides instead, the Dexter C1000 is a Grade 1 asylum function lock, ANSI F87, for doors 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch thick, and the Arrow MK33-BD-CS is a Grade 2 asylum function cylindrical lock with a ball knob and a conventional cylinder in the Schlage C keyway.
11) Can I use a classroom lever where an ND80 storeroom lock is specified?
They are different functions and are not interchangeable on a spec. The Schlage ND80 is ANSI F86 storeroom, outside lever permanently fixed with key-only entry. Classroom function keeps the outside lever operable until a key locks it: the Dexter C1000 classroom is a Grade 1 clutching keyed classroom lever for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Dexter C1000 classroom security version adds inside keyed locking, and the Cal-Royal AG03 is a Grade 2 classroom lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway and a 2-3/4 inch backset. Schlage's own classroom equivalent in the same series is the ND70, ANSI F84.
12) Is the ND80 strong enough for a psych unit or holding room door that gets abused?
That is what the chassis is built for. The ND locked lever holds without giving access at a minimum 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque, 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack, and 100 vertical lever impacts. Cycle life is a minimum 16 million with no visible lever sag and no set screws or O-rings propping it up. Body is zinc and steel, rated heavy duty. Note that the beyond Grade 1 numbers apply with Schlage cylinders (conventional, FSIC or SFIC); with a non-Schlage cylinder it still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but performance may be lower.
13) What is a cheaper storeroom lever if I do not need Grade 1 or anti-ligature trim?
For a back-of-house stock room where abuse is not the concern, the Hager 2580 with Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock covering 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG05 is a Grade 2 storeroom leverset with a deadlocking latchbolt for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Neither is ligature resistant, so they are not substitutes on a behavioral health opening.
14) Can my locksmith use a competitor's cylinder in an ND80?
The ND Series uses three spring cage sets that support all Schlage cylinder formats plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so an existing non-Schlage key system can usually be carried over. Order the LD less cylinder version and fit your own. Schlage notes that with a non-Schlage cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1, but you give up the higher torque and pull numbers.
15) Does the ND80 with ligature resistant trim need power or wiring?
No. This is the mechanical ND80, key operated with no electronics and no wiring. If you need access control or door status on the opening, the ND Series also offers wired electrified and NDE wireless electronic versions of the storeroom function, and the electrified functions auto-detect 12/24V DC with a 0.4 amp maximum draw and 0.1 amp holding current.
16) The door does not need to lock at all - what Grade 1 passage lever matches the ND80 chassis class?
For an unlocked opening, Grade 1 cylindrical passage levers include the Falcon K101, a heavy duty Grade 1 non-handed passage lock that is fire rated and fits doors 1-3/8 inch to 2-1/4 inch, the Falcon T101 heavy duty Grade 1 passage lever, the Corbin Russwin CL3110 Grade 1 vandal resistant passage lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, and the Dexter C1000 Grade 1 clutching passage lever. The ND80 differs in that it is keyed, taking a single cylinder, and is a handed lock.
17) What looks like a substitute for the ND80 anti-ligature trim but is not?
Dummy trims and decorative levers get pulled up alongside it and will not secure an opening. The Accentra 455LN Augusta is a Grade 1 single dummy cylindrical lever, the BEST 9K 1DT is a Grade 1 non-keyed single dummy trim, and the Emtek Classic Cortina and Arts and Crafts dummy pairs are non-functional trim. None of those have a latch or a cylinder. The Schlage ND80 is a keyed cylindrical storeroom lock with HSLR anti-ligature trim, supplied with a 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 10-025 ANSI strike.
18) Is there an electrified Grade 1 cylindrical lever to use instead of a mechanical ND80 on an access-controlled door?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever running 12V AC/DC, offered for doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick, including a keyed configuration. The Schlage ND80 as configured is a mechanical, non-electronic storeroom lock; Schlage's own ND80 is also offered in an electrified version and with a Request to Exit option within the ND Series.
19) Can a Grade 3 residential lever replace an ND80 on a commercial storeroom door?
No. Levers such as the Kwikset 200BRNL Breton passage and Kwikset 300BRNL Breton privacy are Grade 3 for 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch doors, the Cal-Royal AUS00 is a Grade 3 entrance/office lever, and the Callan Artino and Bennett are Grade 3 entrance leversets. The Schlage ND80 is a Grade 1 commercial heavy duty storeroom lock certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 1, so those Grade 3 units sit at a different certified performance level and offer a different function.
20) What should I use if the opening needs an entrance or office function rather than storeroom?
Entrance function options include the Hager 2525 Grade 2 commercial cylindrical entry lever for 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch doors, the Falcon B511CP6D Grade 2 medium duty entry/office lever, and the Cal-Royal AG00 Grade 2 entrance lever with a 6-pin Schlage C keyway on a 2-3/8 inch backset. The Schlage ND80 is storeroom function, where the outside lever stays fixed and cannot be left unlocked; within the ND Series the entrance/office counterpart is the ND50, ANSI F82.
21) Will the ND80 match the other hardware already in my building?
The ND Series is aesthetically suited to Schlage ALX Series Grade 2 locks and suites with Von Duprin exit devices and other Schlage products, so a corridor of ND locks and Von Duprin devices reads as one set. Keep in mind the HSLR ligature resistant trim is its own sloped shape; if you want visual consistency across a whole wing, standardize the trim choice as well as the finish.
