Schlage ND80PDEL RHO 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage ND80EL unlock or lock when the power drops?
It unlocks. The ND80EL is the fail-safe electrified storeroom lock, so cutting current releases the outside lever and the door becomes free to open from both sides. That is what you want on a stair re-entry or a door tied to a fire alarm release, and it is the wrong choice for a stockroom or IT closet that has to stay secure through an outage. For that, the fail-secure version of the same storeroom function stays locked outside with no power and is opened by key.
2) Will the Schlage ND80EL fit the same door prep as the lock I'm pulling off?
If the existing lock is a standard cylindrical set, yes. Every ND Series lock uses the common cylindrical ANSI 161 door preparation, which is why Schlage sells it for retrofit as well as new construction. The lock is non-handed, so you don't specify hand when you order. It ships with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset, so check that your existing cross-bore is drilled at 2-3/4 and not 2-3/8 before you order.
3) Is there a cheaper storeroom lever lock than the Schlage ND80 if the door doesn't need to be electrified?
Two straightforward step-downs, both mechanical only. The Hager 2580 with the Withnell lever is a Grade 2 storeroom cylindrical lock rated for 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, which gives you more thickness range than the ND80's 1-3/4 inch. The Cal-Royal AG05 is also a Grade 2 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt, likewise 1-3/8 to 2 inch. Neither takes an access control signal, so if the opening has to unlock from a card reader or drop open on alarm, they are not substitutes. For a Grade 1 electrified fail-safe lever from another maker, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 is the closest peer, 12V AC/DC on 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors.
4) Will the ND80EL latch into the strike that's already in my frame?
It depends on your frame prep. The lock comes with the 10-025 ANSI strike, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches with a 1-3/16 inch lip, no box. That is the standard ANSI cutout, so if your frame is already prepped ANSI it drops in. A frame cut for a small T-strike will need to be modified or filled. The 1-3/16 inch lip is measured from the frame centerline, so on a deep stop or an offset frame confirm the lip carries the latch clear of the jamb.
5) Can I put a Schlage ND80EL on a fire rated door?
Yes. ND Series locks are UL/cUL listed for 3 hour A label single fire doors up to 4 feet by 10 feet, and for pairs at 3 hours up to 8 by 8 feet with the 3/4 inch latch option. Pairs at 90 minutes go to 8 by 10 feet, also with the 3/4 inch latch. Note the pair sizes both call for that 3/4 inch latch, so specify it if your opening is a pair. Being fail-safe, the lock releases the outside lever on power loss, so on a rated opening confirm your fire alarm and access control sequence is what the AHJ signed off on.
6) What voltage does the Schlage ND80EL electrified lever run on, and how much current does it draw?
The electrified ND functions auto-detect 12 or 24V DC, so you do not order a voltage. Maximum draw is 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding current, low enough that the levers do not heat up on a continuously powered fail-safe opening. Size your power supply and door loop off the 0.4 amp inrush figure.
7) Can I get the ND80EL keyed to my existing Schlage master key system?

For a 2 inch leaf you need a lock whose thickness range covers it: among Grade 1 cylindrical locks, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 electrified fail-safe lever is listed for 1-3/4 to 2 inches, and the Falcon K101 Grade 1 cylindrical is listed for 1-3/8 to 2-1/4 inches though that one is passage function, not keyed storeroom.
9) Can I use my existing Corbin Russwin or Yale cylinders in a Schlage ND lock?
Yes, within limits. The ND uses three spring cage sets that between them accept all Schlage cylinder formats (conventional, FSIC and SFIC) plus eight competitive cylinder formats, so a building already keyed on another manufacturer's system can usually stay on it. Order the lock less cylinder and fit your own. Worth knowing: the beyond-Grade-1 torque and pull figures Schlage publishes apply with Schlage cylinders; with a competitive cylinder the lock still exceeds BHMA Grade 1 but the performance may be lower than with a Schlage cylinder.
10) What is the closest electrified fail safe cylindrical lever lock to the Schlage ND80EL from another manufacturer?
The Corbin Russwin CL33903 is the nearest cross-brand equivalent. It is a Grade 1 fail safe electrified cylindrical lever lock in the CL33900 Series, offered in a 12VAC/DC version, and it fits doors 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch thick. 14) Is a cylindrical lever lock like the Schlage ND80 strong enough for a high-traffic commercial door, or do I need a mortise lock?
For most commercial openings the ND is enough and easier to install. It is a Grade 1 heavy duty cylindrical lock in zinc and steel, tested to 3,100 in-lb of abusive lever torque (2.6 times the BHMA requirement), 1,600 lbs of offset lever pull against pry bar attack, 100 hammer blows, and 16 million cycles with near zero lever droop and no set screws or O-rings holding it together. Where a mortise still wins is when you need a deadbolt in the same lock body or a function the cylindrical range does not offer. 15) What's the difference between a storeroom lock and a classroom or entry/office lock?
Storeroom means the outside lever is locked at all times and there is no way to leave it unlocked. You key in, and the lever relocks behind you every time. An entry/office function has a button or turn that lets staff hold the door unlocked for the day, and a classroom function is keyed from the outside to lock or unlock the lever but has no inside button. Pick storeroom for stock rooms, mechanical and electrical rooms, IT closets and anything that must never be propped unlocked by accident. In the ND range that is the ND80 (ANSI F86); the entrance/office is the ND50 (F82) and the classroom is the ND70 (F84). On the electrified ND80 the same rule holds, except access control can also release the outside lever.
16) Does the Schlage ND80 meet ADA and accessibility requirements for a government or school building?
Yes. The lever operation meets ADA requirements and complies with ICC A117.1 for accessible and usable buildings. It also meets the Buy American Act and the federal FF-H-106C Series 161 specification, which is what most agency and institutional specs ask for.
