1) What happens to a Schlage ND96EL lock when the power goes out?
Power loss unlocks it. The ND96EL is the fail-safe version of the ND Series electrified storeroom lock: the outside lever is held disengaged by power, and cutting power (or throwing the switch) frees the outside lever so anyone can get in. That is the opposite of a fail-secure lock, which stays locked when power drops. Use fail-safe where a room has to be reachable in an emergency, or where a stairwell or corridor door has to release on fire alarm. If you need the door to stay locked from outside during an outage, you want the fail-secure ND Series electrified storeroom lock instead, not this one. Either way the inside lever is always free for immediate egress, so life safety out of the room does not depend on the power.
2) Will the Schlage ND96EL fit my existing cylindrical lock prep?
Yes, if the door carries the standard ANSI 161 cylindrical prep. Every ND Series lock, including the electrified and ligature-resistant trims, uses that common preparation, so they drop into new construction and retrofit openings alike. The lock ships for a 1-3/4 inch door with the 13-247 deadlatch on a 2-3/4 inch backset and a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch square corner faceplate. Check the backset on your existing latch first: if the door is bored at 2-3/8 inches, the standard 2-3/4 inch latch will not reach.
3) Do I need to specify handing when ordering a Schlage ND96EL lever lock?
No. The ND96EL is non-handed, so one lock covers a left or right hand door and you do not have to figure out the swing before you order. What you do have to specify is the lever design and finish, the cylinder option, and the keying.
4) Is the Schlage ND96EL ANSI Grade 1 and can it go on a fire rated door?
Grade 1, tested and certified under ANSI/BHMA A156.2 Series 4000. The wired electrified locks additionally comply with A156.25 for indoor electrified locking devices. 5) What voltage does the electrified Schlage ND96EL run on and how much current does it draw?
The ND Series electrified functions auto-detect 12 or 24V DC, so you do not order a voltage, the lock sorts itself out on whatever the power supply delivers. Maximum draw is 0.4 amps with 0.1 amps holding current, which is low enough that the levers do not heat up, a real complaint on older electrified trim. Size your supply and figure your wire run off the 0.4 amp inrush.

Yes, the ND96EL is also available with Request to Exit (RX), which reports inside lever movement back to the access control panel so the system knows a legitimate egress happened rather than a forced door. If you are tying this opening into an access control head end with door position monitoring, specify RX at the time of order, it is not something added in the field.
12) How does a storeroom function lock behave day to day compared to an office or classroom lock?
Storeroom means the outside lever is always locked and there is no way to leave it unlocked. Key entry from outside retracts the latch for that one entry only, then it relocks behind you, and the auxiliary latch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed so it cannot be carded. On the ND96EL that mechanical behavior is layered under the electric release. 14) I only need a mechanical storeroom lever, no wiring. What should I buy instead of the ND96EL?
Skip the electrified lock entirely if there is no access control at the opening. Within the ND Series the mechanical storeroom function is the ND80 (ANSI F86), same chassis, same ANSI 161 prep, no power required. If Grade 2 is acceptable for the traffic, the Hager 2580 storeroom lock with the Withnell lever covers 1-3/8 to 2 inch doors, and the Cal-Royal AG05 storeroom lever with a deadlocking latchbolt covers 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch. Running conduit and a power supply to a storeroom door that nobody will ever release remotely is money spent for nothing.
15) Which lever styles and finishes can I get on the Schlage ND96EL, and will they match the rest of my building?

16) Which electrified cylindrical lever should be used when the door must stay locked during a power failure instead of unlocking?
The ND96EL is a fail safe device: the outside lever is continuously disengaged electrically and unlocks on power failure. Of the electrified cylindrical levers in the same class, the Corbin Russwin CL33903 in its 12AC/DC NZ lever, D rose form is also a Grade 1 fail safe lever for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors, so it behaves the same way on loss of power.
