Schlage HL6 SERIES OVERVIEW

Hospitals and other healthcare environments have special requirements for noise reduction to help patients heal faster and staff perform more accurately and efficiently.

There are many sources of noise, but choosing quiet door hardware can help reduce excess noise and create quieter environments. The newly redesigned HL Series quiet hospital push/pull hardware offers a proven 50% quieter paddle operation than our previous product, providing healthcare organizations a reliable solution for noise reduction initiatives.

The HL Series includes a full line of solutions that deliver both superior quality and exceptional performance:

HL6

A durable and versatile latching solution. The traditional design has a short throw angle, allowing the door to be opened with an easy push or pull action, even when hands are not free.

PL7/PL8 privacy function

This patented design is ideal for restrooms or patient bathrooms. The privacy function is actuated by a thumbturn and an opposite side release provides for access in case of emergency.

HL6 mortise lock option

Combines the features and convenience of the HL6 push/pull operation with the Schlage L Series heavy-duty mortise lock.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

The HL Series of quiet push/pull latches are non-handed and UL listed for all single labeled metal or wood doors, making them ideal for healthcare applications, restrooms, commercial and institutional doors, including single fire doors. The short throw angle allows door opening with an easy push or pull action.

Quiet functionality

  • Dampened paddle action – depression and snap back – reduces noise associated with lock operation
  • Proven 50% quieter paddle operation – both in the pull and push direction – than our previous solution
  • Comes standard on all HL Series hardware

Schlage SCH-PL7-2-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage PL7 privacy latch have to be ordered handed?
Non-handed. The PL7 goes on either a left or right hand door without a separate part number, so a property manager standardizing across a floor of patient bathrooms orders one configuration and it fits every opening. What you do have to get right is which side is the push side, since the thumbturn lives there and the coin release is opposite.
2) How does the PL7 privacy function actually lock and release in an emergency?
The paddle retracts the latch from either side until someone throws the push-side thumbturn. Once locked, the outside paddle is dead, but three things release it: rotating the inside thumbturn, actuating the inside paddle, or a coin turn from the outside. The inside paddle is always free for immediate egress, which is what makes this usable on a patient bathroom where staff may need in from the corridor.
3) Can a Schlage PL7 latch go on a fire rated door?
It is UL Listed for a 3-hour fire door at 4.0 x 8.0 inches. That covers single labeled openings. Note this is the privacy version, so on a fire door your AHJ will want to see that a locked bathroom leaf is acceptable in that location; the latch itself carries the listing.
4) Will the PL7 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
It uses a standard ASA strike to ANSI 115.1, 1-1/4 by 4-7/8 inches, with a 1/2 inch throw brass latchbolt. If your existing frame is prepped for that ASA lip strike, the PL7 drops into it. A frame cut for a smaller T-strike or a full-lip 4-7/8 prep in a different pattern will need the frame reworked.
5) Is the Trimco 1562A a substitute for the Schlage PL7?
They are close in form and different in function. The Trimco 1562A is a tubular hospital push/pull latch in a passage function with levers down, and it is rated heavy duty, matching the PL7 on duty level and on tubular prep. Passage means it does not lock. The Schlage PL7 is a privacy function: the latchbolt is retracted by the paddle from either side unless the outside is locked by the push-side thumbturn, with an inside paddle that stays free for immediate egress. Use the 1562A where the opening only needs latching, and the PL7 where a restroom or patient bathroom has to secure from inside.
6) What is the equivalent of a Schlage PL7 hospital latch from ABH?
The closest ABH counterpart to the Schlage PL7 is the ABH 6000 Series push/pull hospital latch, which covers the same push/pull paddle operation on a bored door prep. The difference to weigh is function: the PL7 is a privacy function with a push-side thumbturn and an opposite-side coin turn release, while the ABH 6000 Series is described as a push/pull hospital latch with ADA compliance. If the opening is a patient bathroom or restroom that has to lock from the occupied side, the PL7 carries the privacy hardware; if it is a corridor or utility door that only needs hands-free push/pull, the ABH 6000 covers it.
7) The door is prepped for a mortise lock, not a bored lockset. What hospital push/pull latch fits instead of a Schlage PL7?
The Schlage PL7 is a tubular lock type on a bored prep, so it will not drop into a mortise pocket. For a mortise prep, the ABH 6600 Series is a mortise lock hospital push/pull latch listed with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Schlage also builds the HL6 mortise lock option, which pairs the HL6 push/pull operation with the L Series heavy-duty mortise lock, so a facility standardizing on Schlage can keep the same paddle look across both prep types.
8) The opening has a deep stile and needs more than a 2-3/4 inch backset. What hospital latch works?
Backset is the first thing that rules a hospital latch in or out on a deep stile. The Schlage PL7 is specified in 2-3/4 inch, 3-3/4 inch, 5 inch and 7 inch backsets, so it reaches openings a standard-backset latch cannot. The ABH 6600 Series mortise hospital push/pull latch is listed at a 2-3/4 inch backset. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore before ordering, since the deeper backsets on the PL7 are ordered as separate configurations rather than adjusted in the field.
9) What options can I add to a Schlage HL Series push/pull latch when I order?
Six suffixes are available on the HL line: B for brass base material on the US26 and US260 finishes, E for handles engraved PUSH and PULL, EN for an entrance only latch, EO for an exit only latch, L for lead lined (the one you need on an imaging suite door), and SOC for pin-in-socket security screws where you are worried about tampering. Optional engraving on the handles is offered as well.
10) Should I use the PL7 tubular privacy latch or the HL6 mortise version?
Pick by the door prep and the duty you need. The PL7 is a tubular privacy latch: bored prep, thumbturn privacy, made for restrooms and patient bathrooms. The HL6 mortise option pairs the same push/pull paddle operation with a Schlage L Series heavy duty mortise lock and gives you access to 16 mortise functions including electrified ones. If you need keyed control, an electrified function, or the door is already mortise prepped, go mortise. For a privacy bathroom on a bored door, the PL7 is the right shape.
11) Why choose a push/pull paddle latch over a lever for hospital doors?
Two reasons that matter on a healthcare corridor. The paddle has a short throw angle, so the door opens with a push or pull even when hands are full or gloved, which is the whole point in a patient room. And the HL Series paddle action is dampened on both depression and snap back, a proven 50 percent quieter operation than the previous Schlage design, which is why noise reduction programs specify it over a standard lever.
12) What else can I use if the Schlage PL7 will not fit my hospital door?
Several push/pull hospital latches from other makers cover different preps. The ABH 6000 Series is a push/pull hospital latch with ADA compliance. The ABH 6800 Series is a low profile version, and the 6800Q adds quiet operation with a round cover, which is the closest peer to the HL Series noise story. If your door is already mortise prepped rather than bored, the ABH 6600 Series is a mortise lock hospital push/pull latch with a 2-3/4 inch backset. Kaba Ilco's 459 Series push/pull paddle is another option. Note that none of those is a thumbturn privacy latch the way the PL7 is; the Trimco 1562A tubular hospital latch, for instance, is a passage function, so it will not lock a restroom.
13) Will the PL7 match the HL6 latches already on my other patient room doors?
It suites with them. The PL7 privacy function shares the HL Series classic paddle design, so a floor running HL6 push/pull latches on the corridor doors and PL7 privacy latches on the bathrooms reads as one hardware set, in the same finish, with the same push and pull action for staff. That is the usual way these get specified together.
14) Does the Schlage PL7 work on a wood door or only hollow metal?
Both. The HL Series quiet push/pull latches are UL listed for all single labeled metal or wood doors, so a wood patient bathroom leaf and a hollow metal restroom door take the same latch. The constraint that decides fit is thickness, 1-3/4 inches, and the bored prep at your chosen backset.
15) What is a lower-profile alternative to the Schlage PL7 push/pull latch for a tight door edge?
Where the paddle projection has to stay shallow, the ABH 6800 Series is a low profile hospital push/pull latch with ADA compliance, and the ABH 6800Q is the quiet version of that low profile latch with a round cover. The trade is the same one as with the rest of the ABH hospital line: both are push/pull latches, while the Schlage PL7 adds the privacy thumbturn on the push side with an emergency release from the opposite side. On the noise question specifically, the PL7 sits in the HL Series, whose dampened paddle action is stated as 50 percent quieter than the previous Schlage solution, and the ABH 6800Q is likewise built as a quiet latch.
16) Which hospital push/pull latch should I standardize on across a facility with a mix of bored and mortise doors?
Two families let you hold one look across both preps. From ABH, the 6000 Series covers the push/pull hospital latch and the 6600 Series covers the mortise version at a 2-3/4 inch backset. From Schlage, the HL Series spans tubular, privacy and mortise, with the HL6 mortise option using the L Series heavy-duty mortise lock, and the PL7 privacy function covering the restroom and patient bathroom openings. The Schlage side is non-handed and UL listed for all single labeled metal or wood doors, and offers 10 finishes including antimicrobial options, which matters when a facility is matching finish across hundreds of doors.
17) What finishes does the Schlage PL7 come in, and which hold up in a healthcare setting?
Eight finishes are orderable: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 629 bright stainless steel, and 630 satin stainless steel. Every one of them is available in all four backsets. For patient areas the satin stainless 630 is the usual specification because it hides wear and cleaning marks; Schlage also publishes antimicrobial 626AM and 630AM versions of the satin chrome and satin stainless finishes.
18) Is the PL7 hospital latch heavy duty enough for a high traffic public restroom?
It is rated heavy duty and specified as commercial hardware, built from zinc and steel with a brass latchbolt. That is the construction class used on institutional restroom and patient bathroom doors that cycle all day. The paddle itself is the wear point on any push/pull latch, and the HL Series dampened action is what keeps the snap back from beating the mechanism up.
19) Can the PL7 paddle be mounted vertically instead of horizontally?
Yes, the HL Series offers a variety of vertical and horizontal mounting positions, which is how the same latch covers doors where a horizontal paddle would foul a push plate, a vision lite, or an adjacent wall return. Decide the orientation with the door swing and what is beside the opening before you cut the door.
