1) Will the Schlage PM081 mortise lock fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or does it need a 1-3/4 inch door?
The PM081 is built around 1-3/4 inch doors as standard, with 1-3/8 inch (35 mm) as the minimum. It will also go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but over 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the door thickness and the lock's position in the door at time of order, and that is only available EE.
2) Do I have to order the Schlage PM081 in a specific hand?
No. Handing is field reversible on the PM081, so one lock covers left and right hand openings and you can set it on site. That makes it easier to carry as a stock item across a building where the doors swing both ways.
3) How does the storeroom function on the Schlage PM081 actually work day to day?
Storeroom function means the outside lever is always locked and the key retracts the latchbolt for entry; the inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress. There is no way to leave the outside unlocked, which is why it is used on mechanical rooms, supply closets, stairwell and tenant storage doors where the opening should never be left open by accident.
4) What cylinder options do I pick from when ordering the Schlage PM081, and can I use my own core?
Five cylinder choices: less SFIC (B), less FSIC (J), less conventional 6-pin cylinder (L), a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5 (P), or FSIC with a construction core (T). If your building is already on an SFIC or FSIC key system, order the less-cylinder option and drop in your own cores. If you just need a working keyed lock out of the box, take the P conventional 6-pin.
5) Will a Schlage PM081 mortise lock drop into a pocket cut for a Schlage L Series?
Not as a straight swap. The PM Series case and cover hole locations differ from the L Series, so the through-bolt and trim holes will not line up even though both are mortise locks. Plan on re-prepping the door or using the PM Series template rather than assuming the L Series prep carries over.
6) What is a cross-brand equivalent to the Schlage PM081 storeroom mortise lock?
