1) What exactly does a Schlage PM175 half dummy give you, and does it actually latch?
Nothing latches. The PM175 is dummy trim with a lock case behind it, so you get a fixed lever on one face of the door and a mortise case that fills the pocket. It is non-keyed and has no working latchbolt operation. Use it on the inactive leaf of a pair, or on a door held closed by a roller catch or magnet, where you want the lever to look and feel like the operating hardware on the rest of the openings.
2) Will the Schlage PM175 dummy fit a 1-3/4 inch door, and what about thicker doors?
1-3/4 inches (44 mm) is the standard door thickness for the PM Series, with 1-3/8 inches (35 mm) the minimum. The case will go into doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick, but over 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the door thickness and the position of the lock in the door when you order.
3) How big a mortise pocket does the PM Series lock case need?
The case measures 4-7/16 x 6-1/16 x 1 inch (113 x 154 x 25 mm). One thing to watch on a retrofit: Schlage notes the PM Series case and cover hole pattern differs from the L Series, so an existing L Series pocket is not a straight drop-in for the mounting holes even though the pocket size is close.
4) Can I match this dummy lever to the working locks on the rest of my building?
That is the point of it. The PM Series runs 10 lever designs (Athens, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Neptune, Playa, Rhodes, Selena, Tubular and Two) in six finishes: 613 Oil Rubbed Bronze, 619 Satin Nickel, 622 Matte Black, 625 Bright Chrome, 626 Satin Chrome and 643E Aged Bronze. Schlage also builds the PM mortise line to suite with the PT Series tubular locks, which share the same lever and rose styles, so a dummy on a mortise-prepped leaf can match a tubular lock down the hall.
5) I need a working passage lever, not a dummy. What is the right PM Series function?
For a door that actually needs to latch, go to the PM010 passage latch: levers both sides, latchbolt only, retracted from either side at all times, with the inside lever always free for egress. The PM175 dummy has no latch at all. If you want a passage function from another brand, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock that is also field reversible, and the Hager 3810S and 3810E are Grade 1 passage mortise locks on a 2-3/4 inch backset with rose and escutcheon trim respectively.
6) What is a good alternative to the Schlage PM175 dummy mortise trim on the active leaf that actually needs to latch?
The PM175 is a half dummy - its lock function is dummy and it is non-keyed, so the lever is fixed and there is no latching. For the leaf that has to latch without keying, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy-duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim and a 2-3/4 inch backset, the same backset the PM175 uses. A common pairing on a double door is a working passage lock on the active leaf and the dummy trim on the inactive leaf so both levers look identical.
7) Is the Falcon MESC600DT dummy trim a substitute for the Schlage PM175?
No - they solve different openings. The Falcon MESC600DT is a dummy escutcheon lever trim made for M9900 Series exit devices, so it mounts to a door already carrying an exit device.
