Schlage L0172 06A 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage L0172 dummy trim actually latch, or is it just a fixed lever?
Nothing moves. The L0172 is full dummy trim: a lever on each side, fixed by a mounting bar, with no latch, no bolt and no key. It's for the inactive leaf of a pair, a closet or a false door where you want the opening to match the working doors around it. If the door needs to hold shut, you want a passage or office function mortise lock instead, not this.
2) Will the Schlage L0172 dummy trim fit a 1-3/4 inch door?
1-3/4 inches is exactly what the L0172 trim is built for, which is the standard commercial door thickness. If your doors are thicker, the rose and escutcheon choice matters: the L cast/forged escutcheon covers 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inch doors and the N wrought escutcheon covers 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inch. On a thicker leaf, specify one of those escutcheon designs rather than the A or B wrought rose.
3) Will Schlage L0172 dummy trim match the L Series locks already on my other doors?
That's the reason to buy it. The dummy trim is drawn from the same L Series lever, rose and escutcheon families as the keyed and non-keyed L9000 locks, so an office in 626 satin chrome with an 03 lever gets a dummy on the closet door that reads identically. Order it in the same finish and lever style as the working openings and nobody can tell which door is locked.
4) What do I have to specify when ordering Schlage L0172 dummy trim?
Three choices. Lever style: 01, 02, 03, 05, 06, 07, 12, 17 or 18, or one of the M Collection designs, Latitude, Longitude or Omega. Rose or escutcheon: A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon, or N wrought escutcheon. Finish: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome, 630 satin stainless or 643E aged bronze. Note the 12 lever is ordered handed, left or right; the rest are not.
5) The door needs to latch, not just look matched - what should be ordered instead of an L0172 dummy trim?
An L0172 is a dummy: the levers are fixed by a mounting bar and do not retract a latch. For an opening that has to latch and stay closed, a passage mortise lock is the substitution. The Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock, fire rated and field reversible. Hager offers the 3810S passage mortise lock with rose and 2-3/4 inch backset and the 3810E with escutcheon, both covering 1-3/4 inch to 2-1/2 inch doors. TownSteel offers the MRX-L-01 and MRX-A-01 passage mortise locksets in Grade 1 heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors with anti-ligature trim.
6) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage L0172 full dummy mortise trim from another manufacturer?
The L0172 is a full dummy trim with a lever on both sides fixed by a mounting bar, so the peers to look at are the other mortise dummy sets. Falcon offers the MESC600DT dummy escutcheon lever trim, which is a fire rated dummy trim built for M9900 Series exit devices rather than a lock case opening. Emtek offers several mortise dummy locksets in decorative families: the 3019 Brisbane, the 3102 Memphis, the 3104 Hamilton and the 3106 Manhattan. The Emtek sets are knob and lever dummy trim in decorative styling, while the L0172 carries the L Series lever, rose and escutcheon designs and a Grade 1 heavy duty build.
7) If the inactive leaf of a pair needs to look like the keyed leaf, does an L0172 match a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock?
The L0172 is the dummy half of that pairing: same lever, rose and finish on both sides of the door, Grade 1, for 1-3/4 inch doors, in lever styles from 01 through 18 plus Latitude, Longitude and Omega, and finishes from 605 bright brass through 630 satin stainless. It matches within the L Series and suites with Von Duprin exit devices. It does not match another maker's trim. If the active leaf is an Accentra 8805FL Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with an Arcadia lever, or a Cal-Royal NM8080 Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset, the dummy leaf should come from those same families so the lever design lines up.
8) Is dummy trim strong enough for a hospital or school corridor, or is it a light-duty part?
Heavy duty, Grade 1, and the same commercial L Series platform as the locking functions. The trim body is cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating. People pull on dummy levers on inactive leaves constantly, which is where cheap residential dummies fail, and this is built to the commercial standard instead.
9) I need dummy lever trim on an exit device, not a mortise door. Does the L0172 work?
No. The L0172 mounts into a mortise lock prep, so it won't go on a door fitted with an exit device. For dummy lever trim on a device, the Falcon MESC600DT is a dummy escutcheon lever trim made for M9900 Series exit devices and is fire rated.
10) Can an Emtek mortise dummy lockset be used in place of a Schlage L0172 on a commercial opening?
They are both mortise dummy trim, but they are built for different work. The Emtek 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton, 3106 Manhattan and 3019 Brisbane brass are decorative mortise entrance dummy locksets. The L0172 is a commercial heavy duty Grade 1 non-keyed trim on 1-3/4 inch doors, built from cold rolled steel with zinc dichromate plating, offered in 14 lever and decorative styles and in wrought rose, cast or forged escutcheon and wrought escutcheon designs so the dummy leaf matches the rest of the L Series openings in the building.
11) Is a Sargent 130KB thumbturn a substitute for a Schlage L0172 dummy trim?
No - they solve different halves of the door. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn in the 8200 Series, and the 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate in the 7800 Series; both are single-point turn trim that goes into a lock case. The L0172 is a full dummy with a fixed lever on both sides of the door, non-keyed, with no working case behind it. A thumbturn is ordered to operate or dress a live mortise case; the L0172 is ordered when the leaf does not operate at all.
12) The opening needs privacy or an office function rather than a fixed lever - what replaces an L0172?
The L0172 is non-keyed with fixed levers, so it gives no privacy and no office control. For a restroom or bedroom leaf, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock with 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 inch to 2 inch doors. For an office leaf, the Hager 3850E is a Grade 1 non-keyed office mortise lock with lever and escutcheon on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Cal-Royal NM8050 is a Grade 1 office and entrance mortise lockset with an auxiliary deadlatch.
13) Does the L0172 work on a 1-5/8 inch or 2-1/2 inch door, and what covers those thicknesses?
The L0172 is specified for 1-3/4 inch doors. For a thinner leaf, the Alarm Lock DL2700CR and DL3500CR Trilogy electronic mortise locks are built for 1-5/8 inch to 1-7/8 inch doors, both Grade 1 classroom function. For a thicker leaf, the Hager 3810E and 3810S passage mortise locks cover 1-3/4 inch through 2-1/2 inch, and the Baldwin 6301LS entry and apartment lever by lever mortise lock body on a 2-1/2 inch backset is rated for 1-3/4 inch and over. Those are working locks rather than dummy trim, so the function changes with the thickness.
14) Is an L0172 the right choice for a behavioral health or anti-ligature opening?
The L0172 is a standard L Series full dummy trim with a fixed lever on both sides, and the L Series does offer ligature resistant trim options for behavioral health work. For a purpose-built anti-ligature opening the peer sets are the TownSteel MRX-L-01, a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise passage lockset in stainless for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the MRX-A-01, the same passage function in satin stainless with ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. Those three latch; the L0172 does not.
15) What replaces an L0172 when the opening needs credential or keypad access?
The L0172 is non-electronic and non-keyed, so it carries no credential function at all. For access control on a mortise prep, the Schlage CO-100-MS-40-KP is a standalone electronic mortise lock with a keypad reader, Grade 1 heavy duty for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and 3 hour fire rating. The BEST 45HZ EZ Series is an electronic keypad mortise lock with key override, and the Accentra NTM623-NR is a nexTouch Generation 3 mortise lock with a capacitive touchscreen keypad and cylinder override, no deadbolt.
16) Is a mortise deadbolt an alternative to an L0172 on a leaf that does not need a working lever?
They do opposite jobs. The L0172 is trim only, non-keyed, with levers fixed by a mounting bar and no locking action. A mortise deadbolt secures the leaf without any lever: the Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt with a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Kaba Ilco 185 Series is a no-handing mortise deadbolt sold in a single pack. If the leaf needs to be held shut but the levers are only there for appearance, a deadbolt plus dummy trim covers both; a deadbolt alone leaves the leaf with nothing to pull on.
17) Does ordering an L0172 require specifying hand the way other mortise locks do?
The L0172 is field reversible, though the 12 Lever is ordered as left hand or right hand. Among the peers, the Falcon MA101 mortise passage lock and the BEST 45HCAC public entrance mortise lock body are also field reversible. Others are ordered handed: the Baldwin 6310190RRLS is a right hand reverse lever by lever entry and storeroom mortise lock on a 2-1/2 inch backset, and the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW ENGAGE wireless mortise lock is specified right hand with Greenwich trim. The Kaba Ilco 185 Series is sold with no handing.
18) What mortise dummy option suits a glass front or narrow stile door instead of an L0172?
The L0172 is sized for a 1-3/4 inch door with a mortise case measuring 4-7/16 by 3-5/8 by 1 inch, which is a standard commercial door prep rather than a narrow stile or glass door. For glass front work, the Kaba Ilco BR Series is a glass door bottom rail lock, and the Alarm Lock DL1300NW Trilogy Networx wireless electronic mortise lock is built with a keypad for Adams Rite deadlatches. The Dormakaba E-Plex 2066 is a wide stile electronic pushbutton keyless mortise lock.
19) The dummy leaf is next to an electrified opening - can an L0172 be electrified, or is a different lock needed?
The L0172 itself is non-electronic dummy trim. Where the adjacent leaf has to be electrified, the peers are the BEST 45HW wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation in heavy duty, and the Command Access ML19092-M motorized mortise lock with field selectable EL/EU operation on 24VDC in a heavy-duty storeroom function. The L Series electrified functions carry the same lever designs, so an L0172 dummy on the inactive leaf still matches an electrified L Series lock on the active leaf.
20) Does the Schlage L0172 need a cylinder or a key?
No cylinder, no keyway, nothing to key. The L0172 is a non-keyed dummy, so it stays out of your keying schedule entirely. Levers still suite visually with the keyed L Series locks on the same floor, but there's no core to order and no key to cut.
