Schlage L0172 ACCA 626 RH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Schlage L0172 double dummy trim actually latch, or is it just fixed levers?
No latching at all. The L0172 is dummy trim: a lever on each side of the door, held fixed by a mounting bar. Nothing retracts, there is no latchbolt and no lock case function, so it is used on inactive leaves of pairs, closet and cabinet doors, or false doors where you only need something to pull on and want the look to match the working L Series openings.
2) Will the L0172 dummy levers match the keyed L Series locks on the rest of my doors?
Yes, that is what it is for. The L0172 uses the 06 lever and the same A or B wrought rose, L cast/forged escutcheon or N wrought escutcheon designs as the rest of the L Series, in nine finishes from 605 bright brass through 626 satin chrome. Per Schlage, all L Series levers also suite with Von Duprin exit devices and with the LE, LM9200, LM9300 and LT products, so an inactive leaf can be trimmed to look identical to the working hardware around it.
3) Can I use the L0172 on the inactive leaf of a fire rated pair?
Dummy trim carries no latch, so it provides no latching on a fire door and cannot be the hardware that holds an inactive leaf closed. Schlage's fire listings for the L Series cover the lock functions with a latch front, not dummy trim. On a rated pair, the inactive leaf still needs listed flush bolts or a listed device for the rating, with the dummy trim there only to give you a matching lever to pull on.
4) Are the Emtek dummy mortise locksets an equivalent to the Schlage L0172?
They serve the same non-latching purpose but come from a decorative line rather than a commercial one. The Emtek 3102 Memphis, 3104 Hamilton, 3106 Manhattan and 3019 Brisbane are all mortise entrance locksets in dummy function. The Schlage L0172 is a Grade 1 commercial mortise trim in the L Series, non-keyed, on a 1-3/4 inch door, with a 06 lever offered in nine finishes and four rose or escutcheon designs. Choose the Emtek styles for residential-look openings and the L0172 where the rest of the building is L Series and you want the trim to match.
5) What is the closest alternative to the Schlage L0172 if I need the door to actually latch instead of just having fixed levers?
The L0172 is a double dummy trim - the lever is fixed on both sides by a mounting bar and there is no latching mechanism. If the opening needs a lever that retracts a latch with no locking, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation, and the Hager 3810S is a Grade 1 passage mortise lock with rose trim on a 2-3/4 inch backset. The Hager 3810E is the same passage function with escutcheon trim if you want the taller plate look.
6) If the opening turns out to need locking, what mortise lock replaces the L0172 lever look?
The L0172 is non-keyed dummy trim, so any locking requirement moves you to a keyed or privacy mortise lock. For a storeroom opening, the Accentra 8805FL is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock with the Arcadia lever and the Cal-Royal NM8080 is a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lockset with an interchangeable core option on a 1-3/4 inch door. For a restroom or bedroom, the Cal-Royal NM8440 is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lockset with deadbolt and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset.
7) What mortise lock should I use instead of the L0172 on a behavioral health or patient room door?
Dummy trim with a standard 06 lever is not a ligature resistant solution. For those openings, the TownSteel MRX-L-01 is a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in passage function, the MRX-A-01 is the same passage function with satin stainless ligature resistant arch trim, and the Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant.
8) Why do I have to pick a hand on dummy trim that does not move?
Handing on the L0172 sets the lever throw direction so the levers point the correct way on your opening. Left-handed and right-handed are both offered, and the lock family itself is field reversible, but with dummy trim you want the hand matched to the door swing at order time so the levers sit the same direction as the live leaf next to it.
9) Is this Schlage dummy trim rated Grade 1, and is it ADA compliant?
Grade 1 and heavy duty is how the L Series is built and rated. On ADA, Schlage states that all L Series levers with a return to door of 1/2 inch or less comply with the California Referenced Standards Code and meet ADA requirements. The trim is non-keyed and non-electronic, with a CRS body finished in zinc dichromate plating.
10) Is a Schlage CO-100 or LE Series mortise lock a substitute for the L0172?
No. The L0172 is a non-electronic dummy trim with no latch or credential. The Schlage CO-100 mortise lock is a standalone electronic Grade 1 privacy lock with a keypad reader for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Schlage Electronics LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 ENGAGE Series wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a 3 hour fire rating. Those are access control openings; the L0172 is trim for a leaf that does not need to operate.
11) My door is thicker than 1-3/4 inches - what mortise option works where the L0172 does not?
The L0172 trim is specified for a 1-3/4 inch door, with the L cast or forged escutcheon covering 1-3/8 to 2-1/2 inches and the N wrought escutcheon covering 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 inches. If the leaf is beyond that range for the rose you want, the Hager 3810S and 3810E passage mortise locks cover 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors on a 2-3/4 inch backset, and the Baldwin 6310 mortise lock body is listed for 1-3/8 inch and over on a 2-1/2 inch backset.
12) For a classroom that currently has dummy trim, what mortise lock do I move to?
The L0172 is non-keyed dummy trim and has no classroom capability. Mechanical classroom options include the Cal-Royal NM8070, a Grade 1 classroom mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Corbin Russwin ML2003, a Grade 1 mortise classroom lockset in the ML2000 Series for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Marks USA LA318GJ adds a classroom security indicator with an ANSI strike and steel escutcheon on a 1-3/4 inch door.
13) Which finishes does the Schlage L0172 dummy lever come in?
Nine: 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 612 satin bronze, 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome and 626 satin chrome. If you are matching existing L Series openings, order the dummy in the same number as the working locks rather than by name, since brass and bronze tones read differently between manufacturers.
14) Is the Schlage L0172 approved for federal and government jobs?
Schlage states the L Series meets the Buy American Act, and also holds Miami-Dade NOAs and Florida Building Commission listings. For a government or institutional MRO buyer standardizing on one mortise platform, that makes the L0172 the dummy trim to spec alongside the keyed L Series functions on the same job.
15) Can I use a Sargent 130KB thumbturn or a Sargent 4874 deadbolt in place of the L0172?
No, those solve different problems. The Sargent 130KB is a standard duty mortise thumbturn and the 130W is a mortise thumbturn with a round backplate - both are turn pieces, not lever trim. The Sargent 4874 is a double cylinder mortise deadbolt on a 2-3/4 inch backset, which secures a door rather than dressing it. The Schlage L0172 supplies matching lever, rose and finish on both faces with no operating function.
