Schlage PM456 ATHA 626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How does the Schlage PM456 corridor lock actually work from each side of the door?
The PM456 is a corridor function mortise lock with both a deadbolt and a latchbolt. Outside has a key cylinder, inside has a thumbturn. The lever on either side retracts the latchbolt normally. Throw the deadbolt (by key outside or thumbturn inside) and the outside lever goes dead. Key outside retracts the deadbolt and re-enables the outside lever; turning the inside lever pulls both bolts at once and unlocks the outside lever. The inside lever is always free for immediate egress, so the door never traps anyone behind a thrown deadbolt.
2) What door thickness does the Schlage PM456 mortise lock fit?
1-3/4 inches (44 mm) is the standard, and that is what ships unless you say otherwise. Minimum is 1-3/8 inches (35 mm), and the case will work in doors up to 2-1/2 inches thick. If your door is over 1-3/4 inches you have to specify the thickness and the lock's position in the door when you order, and that option is available EE only.
3) Is the Schlage PM456 a Grade 1 lock, and what ANSI function is it?
Grade 1, and the ANSI/BHMA function is F13. That is the corridor/entry function with a deadbolt where the outside lever is locked out by the thrown deadbolt. It is built for commercial use, so it suits corridor doors in multifamily, hospitality, retail and office buildings.
4) What cylinder options do I pick when ordering the Schlage PM456, and can I use my own cores?
Cylinder choice is a required selection. You can take it with a conventional 6-pin cylinder keyed 5 (P), or order it less cylinder so you supply your own: L is less conventional 6-pin, J is less FSIC, B is less SFIC, and T ships with an FSIC construction core for the jobsite. If your building is already on a small format or full size interchangeable core system, order the less-cylinder option and drop in your own cores so the lock keys straight into the existing system.
5) Can I match the Schlage PM456 to the other locks in the building?
Yes. The PM Series is made to suite with other Allegion products, and it shares lever and rose styles with the Schlage PT Series tubular locks, so mortise openings and tubular openings can look identical down the hall. Ten lever designs are offered (Athens, Broadway, Latitude, Longitude, Neptune, Playa, Rhodes, Selena, Tubular and Two) across A, C and D roses or the N escutcheon, in six finishes: 613 oil rubbed bronze, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome and 643E aged bronze.
6) What is the closest equivalent to a Schlage PM456 corridor mortise lock from another manufacturer?
The Sargent 7925 is the nearest match. It is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise lock in the 7900 Series with a corridor/dormitory exit function, rose trim and a single cylinder deadbolt. The Schlage PM456 is likewise a Grade 1 keyed corridor mortise lock with a deadbolt, with the inside lever always free for immediate egress. Both put a deadbolt in the same lock case as the latchbolt, which is what defines a corridor/dormitory opening.
7) If I don't need the deadbolt, what mortise lock should I use instead of the Schlage PM456?
For a keyed opening without a deadbolt in the case, look at the Cal-Royal NM8050, a heavy duty Grade 1 office/entrance mortise lockset with auxiliary deadlatch for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the Accentra 8805FL, a Grade 1 storeroom mortise lock in the 8800 Series with the Arcadia lever. The PM456 carries both a deadbolt and a latchbolt, with the outside lever made inoperative when the deadbolt is thrown.
8) What is the difference between the Schlage PM456 and a classroom mortise lock like the Corbin Russwin ML2003?
Function. The Corbin Russwin ML2003 is a Grade 1 ML2000 Series classroom mortise lockset for 1-3/4 inch doors, where the key controls the outside lever only. The Schlage PM456 is a corridor function with a deadbolt: key outside or thumbturn inside throws the deadbolt and makes the outside lever inoperative, and turning the inside lever retracts both bolts and unlocks the outside lever. Choose the corridor function when an occupant needs to secure the room from inside; choose classroom when the instructor locks down with a key from the corridor side. Cal-Royal NM8070 is another Grade 1 classroom mortise option for 1-3/4 inch doors.
9) For a behavioral health or ligature resistant room, is the Schlage PM456 an acceptable substitute?
No, it is not an anti-ligature design. Use the TownSteel MRX-L-01, a Grade 1 heavy duty anti-ligature lever mortise lockset in stainless steel with passage function for 1-3/4 inch doors, or the MRX-A-01 with ligature resistant arch trim. The Marks USA 5PDN is a Grade 1 hospital passage mortise push/pull paddleset that is ligature resistant and ADA compliant in satin stainless steel. The Schlage PM456 uses zinc levers on brass roses or a wrought brass N escutcheon, though its thumbturn style is ADA qualified.
10) Do I have to order the Schlage PM456 handed?
No. Handing is field reversible on the PM456, so one part number covers left and right hand openings and you can set it on site. That is useful for a property manager stocking spares, since a single lock covers any door in the building.
11) Is the thumbturn on the Schlage PM456 ADA qualified?
Yes, the PM Series thumbturn style is ADA qualified, and the lock uses lever trim rather than knobs, which is what accessibility requires on the operable side. That combination is what an institutional or multifamily buyer needs on a corridor door.
12) Should I use a corridor lock with deadbolt or a plain storeroom or classroom mortise lock?
Use a corridor function like the PM456 when the occupant needs to positively secure the door from inside with a thumbturn deadbolt but still walk out freely, which is the usual apartment, dorm or hotel corridor door. If nobody occupies the room and you just want it always locked outside and always free inside, a storeroom function like the Cal-Royal NM8080 or Accentra 8805FL is the simpler pick. For a room locked and unlocked by key from outside only, a classroom function such as the Corbin Russwin ML2003 or Cal-Royal NM8070 is the right family.
13) Is the Schlage PM456 electronic or can it be hooked to an access control system?
The PM456 is a purely mechanical, keyed mortise lock, no electronics in it. The PM Series does include three electrified functions if you need one, but that is a different model number. For card, keypad or wireless credential control on a mortise prep, look at the Schlage Electronics CO-100 standalone mortise lock or the ENGAGE Series LEMD wireless mortise lock instead.
14) What electronic alternative can replace a Schlage PM456 if I want keypad or credential access on a dorm or apartment door?
Several Grade 1 mortise locks cover that. The Schlage CO-100 standalone electronic mortise lock uses a keypad reader on 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Schlage ENGAGE LEMD-GRW is a Grade 1 wireless mortise lock with a 125kHz proximity reader and a mobile enabled deadbolt with LED, with a 3 hour fire rating. Alarm Lock's DL4500 is a Grade 1 electronic mortise deadbolt with 2,000 user codes and a privacy keypad for 1-5/8 to 1-7/8 inch doors. The PM456 is a mechanical, non-electronic lock keyed with a conventional 6-pin, FSIC or SFIC cylinder, so it needs no power or programming.
15) I need a privacy mortise lock with a deadbolt for a restroom, not a keyed corridor lock - what should I order?
The Cal-Royal NM8440 is a heavy duty Grade 1 privacy/bed/bath mortise lockset with deadbolt for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the Hager 3840S is a Grade 1 privacy mortise lock on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2 inch doors. The Schlage PM456 is a keyed corridor lock with a key cylinder outside and a thumbturn inside, so it is specified where the outside side must be key operated rather than simply blocked.
16) What is a simpler mortise lock to use on the non-secured doors when I am standardizing a corridor on the Schlage PM456?
For passage openings that need no key, the Falcon MA101 is a Grade 1 heavy duty mortise passage lock with field reversible operation and a fire rating, and Hager offers the 3810S passage mortise lock with rose or the 3810E with escutcheon, both on a 2-3/4 inch backset for 1-3/4 to 2-1/2 inch doors. The Hager 3850E is an office function mortise lock with lever and escutcheon, non-keyed. The PM456 shares the 2-3/4 inch backset and is also field reversible, so latch prep and handing work stay consistent across the run.
17) Can I order just a mortise lock body and reuse my existing trim instead of a complete Schlage PM456?
If the job calls for a lock body only, BEST lists the 45H Series heavy duty mortise lock body in public entrance function with field reversible operation and the 45HCA Series lock body with intruder function. Baldwin's 6301 and 6310 mortise lock bodies are entrance/apartment and entrance/storeroom on a 2-1/2 inch backset. The Schlage PM456 is supplied as a complete lockset, with lever style, rose or N escutcheon, finish and cylinder prep all selected at order, and it uses a 2-3/4 inch backset, so it is not a drop-in for a 2-1/2 inch backset pocket.
18) My access control drawing calls for an electrified mortise lock - can the Schlage PM456 be wired?
The PM456 itself is a mechanical, non-electronic lock. For a wired opening, the BEST 45HW Series is a heavy duty wired electromechanical mortise lock with 12V/24V operation, and the Command Access ML190 Series is a heavy duty motorized mortise lock with field selectable fail safe or fail secure operation on 24VDC in storeroom function. The PM Series does include electrified functions within its 26 function range if the project wants to stay on one series.
