Three pole-space counts are built: 30, 42 and 54 spaces. Those are NF430L2C, NF442L2C and NF454L2C. All three are 250A main lugs with the same 65 kA interrupting rating, so the choice is purely how many branch circuits the panel schedule calls for.
2) Does a main lugs panelboard need a separate upstream breaker?
Yes. Main lugs means there is no main overcurrent device in the panel itself, so the 250A bus is fed straight from the lugs and protection has to come from the upstream device feeding it. Size that feeder breaker to the 250A line rating. If you need the disconnect at the panel, you want a main breaker interior instead.
3) Will the NF 250A interior fit in a standard 20 inch wide panel can?
It is built for a 20 in nominal width by 56 in nominal height enclosure, with the interior itself at 10.44 in wide. Confirm your existing can matches those nominal enclosure dimensions before ordering a replacement interior for a retrofit.
