3M 7000031670 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can Scotch 35 vinyl electrical tape be used as primary insulation on 600V circuits?
Scotch 35 is rated 600V and is a low voltage product, so it works as primary insulation on building wire, splices and terminations up to 600 volts. It is not suitable for high voltage work, so for medium or high voltage splices you need a rubber splicing or self-amalgamating tape instead. Scotch 35 is not a self-fusing or vulcanizing tape.
2) What colors does Scotch 35 come in for phase identification and motor lead color coding?
Five colors are offered in the 19 mm x 20 m size: white (MPN 7000031667), green (7000031669), blue (7000031670), brown (7000031673) and gray (7000031674). The tape is made for phase identification, color coding motor leads and piping, and marking safety areas, and every color carries the same 600V rating and PVC construction, so you can standardize one tape across a facility and just change the color.
3) Will Scotch 35 hold up outdoors or in an unheated mechanical room?
The tape is UV resistant and stands up to moisture, abrasion, alkalis, solvents and many acids, so it suits outdoor and damp locations. Working temperature runs from -10 C up to 105 C. In hard freezing conditions well below -10 C, vinyl tape stiffens and conforms poorly, so apply it above that limit and stretch it slightly as you wrap.
4) Is Scotch 35 flame retardant and UL listed for commercial and institutional jobs?
Yes. It is flame retardant and self-extinguishing, UL Listed under file number E129200, and also VDE and CSA certified. It is RoHS 2015/863/EU compliant, and the record notes RoHS 2011/65/EU compliance without exemption. That combination is what specifiers and MRO buyers usually need on record for electrical rooms and healthcare or education facilities.
5) How much can Scotch 35 stretch before it tears when wrapping irregular connectors?
Elongation at break is 225%, with tensile strength of 30 N/10 mm, so the tape stretches well past double its length and conforms around lugs, wire nuts and odd shaped connectors without splitting. The rubber-resin adhesive is pressure sensitive, which is why it needs to be stretched and pressed down rather than simply laid on.
6) Does Scotch 35 stick to itself for splicing, or do I need a self-fusing tape?
It is not a self-sticking or self-amalgamating tape. The rubber-resin adhesive bonds to the cable jacket and to previous layers, but it does not fuse into a solid mass the way a self-fusing rubber tape does. For moisture-tight medium voltage splices, use a self-amalgamating rubber splicing tape as the insulating layer and vinyl tape like this as the outer jacket.
7) Is the insulation resistance high enough to tape over a conductor directly?
Insulation resistance is greater than 10^6 megohms, and the 0.18 mm PVC backing is what does the insulating. Combined with the 600V rating, that lets the tape serve as primary insulation on low voltage conductors rather than just a marker or bundling wrap.
8) How long can I keep unused rolls of Scotch 35 on the shelf?
Shelf life is 5 years, so buying the color range in quantity for a stockroom is practical. Keep rolls in their cartons away from heat and direct sun; the PVC backing and rubber adhesive hold up better stored cool.
