3M 300 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does 3M Scotch Barricade Tape 300 stick to surfaces, or does it need to be tied off?
There is no adhesive on it. The 300 Series barricade tape is an unadhesived polyethylene film, so it gets strung between stanchions, posts, cones or fixed points and the ends tied or wrapped off. Plan on something to anchor to at each end of the run; the tape itself will not bond to a wall, pole or floor.
2) Can this yellow CAUTION barricade tape be buried as underground utility warning tape?
No. The Scotch 300 Series CAUTION tape is specified for above ground use only. For trench and buried-line marking you need a detectable or non-detectable underground utility marking tape, which is a different product with the legend and burial depth rating for that job.
3) Will barricade tape hold up outdoors through winter on a jobsite?
The 300 Series is rated for 0 to 120 degrees F, so it covers most of a normal construction season but not deep sub-zero cold. The 2 mil polyethylene film helps it resist accidental tearing, and it stretches a long way before it breaks (400 percent machine direction, 500 percent cross direction), which is why a gust or a snagged sleeve tends to stretch it rather than snap the run.
4) What is the difference between CAUTION tape and DANGER tape, and which do I need?
Legend and color are the difference. The 3M 300 Series roll here carries the CAUTION legend on yellow, which is the marking used for a hazard that warns and directs people around an area, such as an active work zone, a trip hazard or temporary restricted access. Red DANGER tape is used where the hazard is immediately life-threatening and entry is prohibited. If your site safety plan calls out DANGER for an energized or confined-space condition, yellow CAUTION is not a substitute.
5) Is 3M barricade tape 300 UL listed and RoHS compliant for a spec submittal?
