Metallics JFSC634 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Are these black screws plated or just plain steel?
The JFSC634 is steel with a black finish, noted as St-Blk in the Metallics description. It is a black oxide style finish on steel, not stainless, so it is intended for dry interior use rather than wet or outdoor locations.
2) What is the difference between a flat head socket cap screw and a standard pan head machine screw?
A flat head socket cap screw like the JFSC634 has a countersunk conical head that seats flush with the surface, and it drives with a hex key rather than a screwdriver. Pick it where the fastener head cannot protrude, such as under a sliding part or a mating plate. A pan head 6-32 is the better choice where the hole is not countersunk, since a flat head will not seat properly in a flat-bottomed hole and will stand proud.
