Metallics JSTPO4 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What exactly is the Metallics JSTPO4 screw, and how many come in a jar?
JSTPO4 is a #8 x 1-1/2 inch oval head Phillips drive screw in 18-8 stainless steel, packed 100 to a jar. The oval head seats into a countersunk or finish washer and leaves a low rounded crown, so it is the head style used where the fastener stays visible, on cover plates, trim, strike plates and similar finish work rather than buried structural fastening.
2) Will a #8 x 1-1/2 stainless screw hold in sheet metal, or do I need a self-tapper?
The JSTPO4 is a tapping screw, so it cuts its own thread in a pilot-drilled hole in sheet metal, electrical boxes, strut and similar thin stock without a nut behind it. At 1-1/2 inches of length it has plenty of reach for a box or bracket plus a layer of trim; for thicker assemblies you are better off with a machine screw and nut.
3) Is 18-8 stainless good enough for outdoor or damp locations?
18-8 stainless, also called 304, is the standard corrosion resistant grade for exterior and damp interior work, which is why these are specified over plated steel for weatherheads, outdoor enclosures, canopies and wet-location trim. In chloride heavy environments, such as coastal exposure or pool rooms, 316 stainless is the step up.
4) Do these stainless screws need a pilot hole?
Yes, drill a pilot for a #8 tapping screw in metal. Stainless is softer than hardened steel, so driving it dry into an undersized hole will gall the threads or snap the head off before it seats. Pilot it, keep the drill speed low and let the screw cut.
5) We buy fasteners by the box for the truck. How is this one packaged for MRO stock?
These ship as a jar of 100, which is the shop-shelf and service-van pack rather than a bulk carton. One jar covers a run of panel, plate or trim work and the wide-mouth jar keeps the #8 x 1-1/2 size separated from the rest of the bin stock.
6) Can I use the Metallics JSTPO4 with a Phillips bit in a cordless driver?
The head takes a Phillips bit, and a #2 Phillips is the size for a #8 screw. Run the driver on a clutch setting and low speed. Phillips geometry cams out under high torque, and in stainless that means a chewed recess well before the screw is tight.
