The SE6 is a 1-1/8 x 8 screw eye, zinc plated steel. The 8 is the screw gauge and 1-1/8 is the length of the screw portion, so figure on about an inch of thread bite into wood plus the eye sitting above the surface.

These are zinc plated steel, which is a dry or sheltered location finish. Zinc plating resists incidental moisture but it isn't a marine or sustained-wet finish. For exterior exposure or wash-down areas, specify stainless.

That's the common use. A screw eye threads into wood framing or a stud and gives you a closed loop to run drop wire, messenger cable, low voltage or guy wire through, or to hang a pull line. In hardwood or near an edge, yes, drill a pilot slightly smaller than the thread core of the size 8 screw. In softwood framing the 1-1/8 inch shank will usually drive by hand. Pilot drilling also keeps the eye from racking as it seats.
