A screw eye such as the SE8 is a wood screw thread, so it needs solid wood, a stud, joist, or blocking to develop any hold. In drywall alone it will strip out. For hollow wall you need a toggle or hollow-wall anchor instead, and in concrete or block you need a masonry anchor with a threaded eye rather than a wood screw eye.

Closed eye. The formed loop means whatever you thread through it, wire, line, or a snap, cannot jump out of the opening the way it can off an open screw hook. If you need to be able to lift the line off without unthreading it, you want a screw hook instead of the SE8.

Yes in hardwood. A pilot hole slightly smaller than the shank keeps the eye from splitting the grain and lets you turn it fully home, since there is no screw head to drive, you are turning the loop itself. In softwood framing you can usually start it by hand and finish with a rod or screwdriver shaft through the eye for leverage.
