Metallics TP617SBC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver do I need for the Metallics TP617SBC button head screw?
TP617SBC is a pin-in-head star (Torx) drive screw, so a standard Torx bit will not seat. You need a pin-in-star (Torx-pin) tamper resistant bit, which has a hollow center to clear the pin in the middle of the recess. Keep a bit on the truck before you install, since removal needs the same tool.
2) Why use a pin-in-star screw instead of a regular Phillips sheet metal screw?
Tamper resistance. A Phillips or square drive can be backed out by anyone with a basic screwdriver, which is a problem on panel covers, meter and enclosure doors, fixture guards, and anything in a public corridor or tenant space. The pin in the center of the star recess blocks common bits, so only someone with the matching pin-in-star bit can remove the screw. If the fastener is in a locked room or above a ceiling, a standard SMS is usually enough and cheaper to drive.
3) Is the TP617SBC screw self-tapping into sheet metal, or do I need to drill first?
It is a sheet metal screw (SMS), so the thread is designed to cut its own thread in sheet metal once a pilot hole is present. Sheet metal screws are not self-drilling, so in anything but thin, soft stock you drill a pilot sized to the screw's root diameter before driving the #14 x 1-1/4 inch fastener.
4) Will a button head screw sit flush in a countersunk hole?
No. A button head has a low, rounded crown that seats on top of the surface, not inside a chamfer. If your panel or cover is countersunk for a flat head, the button head will stand proud and will not pull tight into the taper. Use a flat head tamper resistant screw for countersunk prep and keep the button head for flat, unprepped holes where a low profile head is acceptable.
5) How many screws come in a pack of Metallics TP617SBC?
They ship 100 pieces per pack, which is a practical count for securing a run of covers, guards, or enclosure panels on a single job rather than buying loose fasteners.
