Metallics TP515SFC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What driver do I need for a hex pin tamper resistant screw like the TP515SFC?
A pin-in-hex (hex pin) security bit, sized to the screw's hex socket. The head has a center post, so a plain hex key or Allen bit will not seat. If your crew does not already carry pin-in-hex bits, add them to the order, because nothing else drives these.
2) Is the TP515SFC stainless steel suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
The screw is 18-8 stainless, the common 300-series austenitic grade used where plain or zinc-plated steel would rust. That makes it serviceable outdoors, in damp mechanical rooms, and in washdown areas. For coastal salt spray or pool chemical exposure, 316 stainless is the usual step up.
3) Will a flat head sheet metal screw sit flush, or will it stand above the surface?
Flat head means a countersunk 82-degree head that finishes flush, but only if the hole is countersunk or the material is thin enough to dimple. Driven into a flat, un-countersunk plate, the head will stand proud. On sheet metal covers and plates, pre-drill and countersink if you need a flush face.
4) Can I use these screws in wood or drywall, or only sheet metal?
SMS stands for sheet metal screw: fully threaded with a sharp, fine thread meant to cut and hold in sheet metal, and it works in a pre-drilled pilot in plastic or thin panel stock as well. It is not a wood screw or a drywall screw, and the 3/4 inch length gives limited embedment, so for framing or gypsum use the fastener made for that substrate.
5) Why would I spec a tamper resistant screw on electrical enclosures and covers?
The hex-pin head stops casual removal with ordinary tools, which is why these go on panel covers, device plates, junction box lids, and fixtures in schools, transit areas, detention, and other public spaces. In an MRO setting it also keeps unauthorized people out of energized enclosures. The 100-piece pack covers a run of covers in one order.
6) How many Metallics TP515SFC screws come in a box?
100 pieces per pack. One order number, TP515SFC, covers the full hundred, so plan quantity in multiples of 100 rather than by the piece.
