Metallics TP532SFC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and type of screw is the Metallics TP532SFC?
It's a #14 x 5/8 inch sheet metal screw with a flat head and a hex pin-in-head tamper-resistant drive, made from 18-8 stainless steel. Sold 100 pieces to the box.
2) Do I need a special bit to drive the TP532SFC tamper-resistant screw?
Yes. The head is a hex socket with a pin in the center, so a standard hex key or hex bit won't engage it. You need a pin-in-hex (spanner-style hex) driver bit sized to the screw. Order the bits with the screws if you don't already keep them on the truck.
3) Are these stainless screws OK for outdoor or damp locations?
18-8 stainless (Type 304 class) gives good general corrosion resistance, so these are commonly used outdoors and in damp interior locations. For salt spray or chlorinated environments, buyers typically step up to 316 stainless instead.
4) Will a flat head screw sit flush on sheet metal, or does it need a countersink?
A flat head seats flush only in a countersunk or dimpled hole. In flat sheet metal with a plain drilled pilot hole the head will stand proud, so the hole needs countersinking first if you want a flush face. If flush isn't required, a pan or hex washer head screw is easier to install.
5) What is the Metallics part number for the 14 x 5/8 stainless pin-hex tamper screw?
Metallics calls it TP532SFC, supplied in boxes of 100.
6) Why would I use a tamper-resistant screw on electrical covers and enclosures?
Pin-in-hex heads keep the general public out of covers, panels, and device plates in corridors, schools, transit areas, and other public spaces, because an ordinary driver set won't turn them. That's the usual reason a spec calls for them on electrical enclosures and cover plates rather than standard screws.
7) Can these sheet metal screws be used in wood or plastic instead of metal?
Sheet metal screw threads are fully threaded and sharp, so they hold in thin metal, and they'll also bite in plywood, hardwood with a pilot, and rigid plastics. What they aren't is a self-drilling screw: there's no drill point on the TP532SFC, so metal needs a pilot hole first.
