Metallics TP522SFC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What driver do I need for the Metallics TP522SFC screw?
It takes a hex pin (pin-in-hex) security bit, not a Phillips or plain hex key. The pin in the center of the recess blocks a standard hex driver, so you need the matching pin-in-hex bit in the #8 size range before the screws get to the job.
2) Are these Metallics screws stainless steel, and will they hold up outdoors?
They are 18-8 stainless. That is the standard 300 series austenitic grade used for corrosion resistance in damp and outdoor-exposed work, which is why it gets specified for exterior enclosures, pool and locker room areas, and coastal-adjacent installs rather than plated carbon steel.
3) Will a sheet metal screw thread work in an electrical box, or do I need a machine screw?
The TP522SFC is a sheet metal screw thread, so it cuts and holds in sheet steel, thin panels and unthreaded holes. It will not thread into the tapped 6-32 or 8-32 holes in a standard outlet box or mud ring. For those you need a machine screw, not this part.
4) Why would a facility use tamper-resistant screws on outlet and switch plates?
Pin-in-hex heads stop anyone with a pocket screwdriver from opening a cover. That is the reason schools, transit areas, correctional facilities, detention rooms and public restrooms standardize on them for receptacle plates, junction box covers and device plates. The TP522SFC is the #8 x 5/8 flat head version of that screw in stainless.
5) Is a flat head screw the right choice for a cover plate, or should I use an oval or pan head?
Flat head sits flush when it is driven into a countersunk or chamfered hole, which is what most metal device plates and box covers are punched for. If the plate you are mounting has a raised or flat-bottom hole with no countersink, an oval or pan head seats better. The TP522SFC is the flat head option.
6) How many Metallics TP522SFC screws come in a box?
One hundred pieces per box, all #8 x 5/8 inch. Work out your count by device plate and order whole boxes; there is no smaller split pack on this part number.
