Metallics TP506SFC – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and type of screw is the Metallics TP506SFC?
It is a #8 by 1 inch sheet metal screw with a flat head and a hex pin tamper-resistant drive, made from 18-8 stainless steel and packed 100 to a box. The flat head is meant to sit flush in a countersunk hole, and the sheet metal thread is designed to cut its own thread in thin metal such as enclosure covers, plates and panels.
2) Do I need a special bit to drive a hex pin tamper-resistant screw?
Yes. The TP506SFC head is a hex socket with a solid pin in the center, so a standard hex key or hex bit will not seat. You need a matching hex-pin (pin-in-hex) driver bit or key sized for a #8 screw. Buy the drivers at the same time as the screws, since the job cannot be completed or later serviced without them.
3) Will 18-8 stainless screws hold up outdoors or in a damp location?
18-8 stainless steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel grade with good general corrosion resistance, so these screws are a reasonable choice for exterior enclosures, damp mechanical rooms and washdown-prone areas where plated carbon steel screws rust. For coastal salt spray or heavy chemical exposure, a 316 stainless fastener is the better specification.
4) Why use tamper-resistant screws on electrical covers and panels instead of regular ones?
Pin-in-hex screws like the TP506SFC are used where you do not want the public opening a cover: junction box and wiring device plates in schools, transit areas, correctional facilities, multi-family common areas and exterior enclosures. A standard Phillips or slotted screw opens with anything in a pocket. Because the drive needs a dedicated bit, access stays with maintenance staff who carry it.
5) Are sheet metal screws like these self-tapping, or do I have to drill a pilot hole?
Sheet metal screw threads cut their own thread as they go, but they are not self-drilling: there is no drill point on the TP506SFC, so a pilot hole is needed in metal. In thin sheet a punched or drilled pilot slightly under the #8 thread diameter gives the best holding power without stripping. In wood or plastic the screw can usually be started in a small pilot.
