Metallics SDSBL2B – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size and type of drywall screw is the Metallics SDSBL2B?
It's a #6 diameter by 1-5/8 inch drywall screw with a bugle head, Phillips drive, full thread and a sharp point, in a black finish. The #6 x 1-5/8 size is the standard pick for fastening 5/8 inch board to wood framing, and the bugle head seats flush in paper facing without tearing it.
2) Will the SDSBL2B sharp point screw work into metal studs?
No. The SDSBL2B is a sharp point (S-Dr) drywall screw, which is made for wood framing. For steel studs you want a self-drilling or fine-thread drill-point drywall screw instead, so pick that version rather than this one if your framing is metal.
3) Is the black coating on these drywall screws suitable for outdoor or damp use?
Treat them as interior only. The black finish on drywall screws is a phosphate-type coating meant to resist handling corrosion and take joint compound, not a weather coating. For exterior sheathing, soffits or any wet location, use a coated or stainless exterior screw instead.
4) Why is a drywall screw listed under electrical supply?
Electrical contractors buy #6 x 1-5/8 bugle head screws in bulk for the same reasons drywall crews do: closing up walls after rough-in, mounting plywood backer boards, and fastening to wood framing around panels and device boxes. The Metallics SDSBL2B is a standard drywall screw, not an electrical-specific fastener.
5) What is the Metallics part number for the 6 x 1-5/8 black bugle head drywall screw?
Order it as Metallics SDSBL2B. That number covers the #6 x 1-5/8 inch bugle head, Phillips, full thread, sharp point drywall screw in black, 10,000 to the box.
