Metallics JDS162V – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What metal thickness will a #8 Type A tapping screw like the Metallics JDS162V self-start in?
The JDS162V is built to self-start in thin sheet metal from 0.015 to 0.050 inch thick, and also works in resin-filled plywood. Its gimlet point starts the hole and the wide-spaced Type A thread forms its own mating thread as it drives. Go thicker than 0.050 inch sheet and you want a Type AB or a self-drilling screw instead.
2) Can I drive the Metallics JDS162V with a 1/4 inch hex driver or do I need a screwdriver?
Either. It has an indented hex washer head with a slot, so you can run it with a 1/4 inch hex bit or socket (head width 0.244 to 0.25 inch, 0.272 across the corners) or finish it by hand with a flat blade. The slot measures 0.045 to 0.054 inch wide and 0.052 to 0.066 inch deep, so a standard cabinet-tip flat driver seats properly.
3) Does the hex washer head on the JDS162V need a separate washer?
No separate washer required. The head is an integral washer type, 0.322 to 0.348 inch outside diameter with a washer section 0.019 to 0.031 inch thick, so it spreads bearing load on sheet metal or thin panel on its own. Head height runs 0.096 to 0.11 inch, so it sits low and clear of adjacent plates.
4) Will a zinc plated steel tapping screw hold up outdoors or in a damp mechanical room?
The JDS162V is zinc plated carbon steel (AISI 1016 to 1024). Zinc plating is a corrosion coating for dry interior and sheltered work, not sustained wet or coastal exposure. For exterior or washdown areas, specify a stainless tapping screw rather than this one.
5) What standards do Metallics JDS Series tapping screws conform to?
Dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010 and the thread follows ASME B18.6.4. Note that Metallics states dimensions for the #9 diameter are independent of ASME B18.6.4. For spec-driven jobs, the JDS162V is also flagged ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant in Metallics' data.
6) What is the thread pitch on the #8 JDS162V, and why does the wide thread matter?
15 threads per inch. That is coarser than a Type AB of the same diameter, which is what lets the screw form a clean, deep thread in thin gauge sheet and hold with only a couple of threads engaged. In resin-filled plywood the same wide spacing gives it bite instead of chewing the hole out.
7) How much torque will these screws take before they snap?
Minimum torsional strength on the JDS162V is 39 lb-in, with case hardness at Rockwell C28-38. That is enough to form thread in sheet metal under a driver, but it is a thread-forming screw, not a structural bolt. If your installer is twisting heads off, the pilot condition or the driver clutch setting is the issue, not the screw.
8) How are the JDS162V screws packaged and what is the minimum I can buy?
They come in a jar of 500, and 500 count is the order minimum, so a jar is the smallest unit. Each jar runs about 3.4 lbs. Metallics makes other sizes and quantities available by request.
