The JDS82 is made to self-start in thin metal from 0.015 to 0.050 inch thick, or in resin-filled plywood. Its gimlet point and wide-spaced thread form their own threads as the screw drives, so no pre-tapping is needed. Thicker steel is outside what a Type A screw is intended for.

The head is an indented hex washer head with a slot, so a 1/4 inch nut driver seats on the hex (head width 0.244 to 0.25 inch, 0.272 across corners) and a flat blade fits the slot, which runs 0.045 to 0.054 inch wide and 0.052 to 0.066 inch deep. It is a Type A tapping screw. Type A threads are spaced wider than Type AB, which means a coarser thread count (15 threads per inch here) and a larger pilot hole than you would use for the same nominal diameter in AB. If your spec or drawing calls out Type AB, this is not a drop-in equivalent.

Dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010 and the thread form follows ASME B18.6.4. Material is AISI 1016 to 1024 steel. One caveat worth flagging on a submittal: dimensions for the #9 diameter in this family are independent of ASME B18.6.4.

They are steel with a zinc finish. Zinc plating handles indoor and protected applications such as duct, enclosures, panel work and interior trim. For direct weather exposure, coastal air, or treated lumber contact, specify a stainless or heavier-coated fastener instead.

Both the Buy American and ARRA compliance flags on the JDS82 read C. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so if a project requires documentation for a specific country of manufacture, request the certification for the lot being shipped.

They ship in a jar of 100, which is also the order minimum (100 count). The jar weighs 0.43 lbs. Other sizes and quantities in this Type A line are available by request if 8 x 5/8 in a 100-count jar is not the pack you need.

Head height is 0.096 to 0.11 inch above the sheet, with a washer face 0.322 to 0.348 inch across. That is a raised profile, not flush, so it is not the screw to use where a cover plate, gasket, or sliding part has to sit flat over the fastener. For those, use a flat or oval head countersunk screw.
