Metallics JDS162 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What metal thickness will the Metallics JDS162 tapping screw self-start in?
The JDS162 is a Type A thread forming tapping screw with a gimlet point, made to self-start in thin metal from 0.015 to 0.050 inch thick, or in resin-filled plywood. Thicker sheet or structural steel needs a self-drilling screw instead, not a Type A.
2) Can I drive the JDS162 screw with a nut driver or do I need a screwdriver?
Either. The head is an indented hex with a slot, so a 1/4 inch nut driver fits over it (head width runs 0.244 to 0.250 inch, 0.272 across the corners) or you can use a flat blade in the slot, which is 0.045 to 0.054 inch wide and 0.052 to 0.066 inch deep. Most electricians run these with a 1/4 inch magnetic nut setter.
3) Can I use the Metallics JDS162 screw on a Buy American or ARRA funded project?
No. The JDS162 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. For a federally funded job with domestic sourcing requirements you will need a domestically produced fastener instead.
4) What is the difference between a Type A and a Type AB tapping screw?
A Type A like the JDS162 has wider spaced threads, 15 threads per inch at #8, and a gimlet point for self starting in thin sheet. Type AB uses a finer thread pitch and suits a broader range of base materials. If the spec on your job calls out Type AB, the thread pitch will not match, so don't substitute this one.
5) Are these screws any good for mounting electrical outlet boxes and sheet metal framing?
That is exactly the intended use. Metallics lists the field application as light metal assembly, including electrical outlets, framing and other sheet metal work. The screws are steel with a zinc finish, so they are for dry interior use rather than exposed exterior locations.
6) How tough are these screws, and will they snap in an impact driver?
The JDS162 is heat treated to Rockwell C28-38 from AISI 1016-1024 steel and carries a minimum torsional strength of 39 lb-in. That is the torque the screw itself will take before twisting off, so keep the clutch setting modest on a high torque driver when seating into harder sheet.
7) Does the JDS162 screw come with a washer built into the head?
Yes, the indented hex head has an integral washer face with a 0.322 to 0.348 inch outside diameter and a thickness of 0.019 to 0.031 inch. Head height is 0.096 to 0.110 inch. The washer spreads bearing on thin sheet so you are less likely to pull the screw through.
8) What standards do these Metallics Type A tapping screws conform to?
Head and body dimensions follow ASME B18.6.3-2010 and the thread form follows ASME B18.6.4. Note that for #9 diameters in the JDS series the dimensions are independent of ASME B18.6.4. Material is per AISI 1016-1024.
9) How are these sold, and how many screws in a jar?
They ship in a jar of 100, and the jar is the order minimum unit. The packed jar weighs 0.68 lbs.
