Metallics MTP530SFC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Do I need a special bit for the Metallics MTP530SFC, or will a standard Torx driver work?
A standard Torx bit will not seat. The MTP530SFC uses a star drive with a center pin, so you need a pin-in-star (Torx-with-pin) bit of the matching size. That pin is the whole point of the head style, it keeps a common driver out of the fastener.
2) Is the M5 x 30mm pin-in-star screw a metric thread or will it match an existing #10 machine screw hole?
It is metric. M5 threads do not interchange with a #10-24 or #10-32 inch machine screw, so a tapped hole or nut made for #10 hardware will not take this screw. If you are matching existing inch-threaded hardware, order an inch-series fastener instead.
3) Why use a flat head tamper resistant screw on electrical enclosures and fixtures?
Two reasons. The flat (countersunk) head sits flush in a chamfered hole so nothing protrudes to catch a cover, a gasket, or a hand. The pin-in-star drive means the cover cannot be opened with a screwdriver or a common Torx bit from a truck box, which is what you want on accessible enclosures, trim, and public-area fixtures. Metallics catalogs the MTP530SFC as an electrical fastener.
4) How much material does a 30mm long M5 screw need behind it?
Since the head is countersunk, the full 30mm is measured overall including the head, so the usable penetration below the surface is close to 30mm less the countersink depth. Plan on a tapped hole or nut with enough depth to take roughly an inch of thread, and confirm nothing sits behind the hole at that depth before driving it.
5) Do I have to buy a full box of 100 of the MTP530SFC, or can I get a handful?
The MTP530SFC is sold as a 100 piece pack, so that is the unit you order. Fine for crews standardizing on one tamper resistant fastener across a building, less so if you only need a couple of replacements.
