1) Will an SDC 100/200 Series electric bolt lock work on a sliding door, or is it only for swing doors?
Both. The 100/200 Series direct throw bolt is bidirectional, so it works on swinging and sliding door applications. That is one of the practical reasons integrators reach for a direct throw bolt over a strike: a sliding leaf has no strike jamb to work with, but a bolt projecting into a prepped keeper in the head or jamb holds it fine. Mortise versions (110I, 160I, 210H, 260H) get let into the door or frame; the 180AI and 280AH surface mount when there is nothing to mortise into.
2) What is the difference between the SDC 110I and the 210H bolt lock?
Fail mode. The 110I is the failsafe direct throw mortise bolt, so the bolt retracts and the door unlocks when power drops. The 210H is the failsecure version, staying locked without power. Both are field selectable for fail-safe or fail-secure, so either model can be set the other way on site. Pick failsafe on anything in an egress path where a power loss has to release the door, and failsecure where the opening must stay secured through an outage, like a stock room or utility enclosure.
3) Which SDC bolt lock model relocks by itself when the door closes?
The 160I, 260H, 180AI and 280AH have automatic relock. A field adjustable ball switch holds the bolt retracted while the door stands open and projects it as soon as the door closes, so you do not need door position logic in the panel to keep the bolt from firing into an open opening. The 110I and 210H do not have it, and the bolt follows the control signal only. If a door gets propped or swung frequently, the auto relock models are the ones to spec.
4) What if I cannot mortise the door or frame for an electric bolt lock?
Use the 180AI or 280AH. Those are the universal surface mount versions of the 100/200 Series, with the automatic relock switch built in, for openings where mortise prep is not possible: existing hollow metal you do not want to cut, retrofit work, cabinets, and enclosures. 180AI is the failsafe surface unit, 280AH the failsecure. If the door or frame can take the prep, the mortise models 110I, 160I, 210H and 260H hide the housing inside the opening instead.
5) My door and frame do not line up well and there is a wide gap. Will an SDC electric bolt still throw?
That is what the 110 and 210 models are built for. Their bolt assembly adjusts up to 1 inch forward of the faceplate, which takes up wide door gaps and doors that do not sit square to the frame. Older openings, warped hollow metal, and gate or enclosure work are where that adjustment earns its keep. On a normally aligned opening you will not need the travel, and any of the six models will do.
6) Is an electric bolt lock the right choice, or should I use an electric strike?
A direct throw bolt like the SDC 100/200 Series locks by projecting a stainless steel bolt into a keeper, so it does not depend on a latch or a lockset being in the door at all. That makes it the answer for metal doors, sliding leaves, cabinets and specialty enclosures where there is no mortise lock to release and nothing for a strike to hold. If your opening already has a mechanical lockset with a latch, a strike releasing that latch is the simpler retrofit. Bolts also suit loss prevention and secure storage doors that just need to hold shut under access control, with no exterior trim.
7) Can I use an SDC 100/200 bolt lock on a hospital or school corridor door that has to release in a fire alarm?
Set it to fail-safe and it releases on loss of power, which is how these get tied to alarm and egress release. The fail mode is field selectable on every model in the series, and the 110I, 160I and 180AI ship configured failsafe. Healthcare and educational controlled access are listed applications for the series. Confirm with the authority having jurisdiction that a bolt is permitted on your specific egress opening before you set it.
8) Will an SDC electric bolt lock hold up in a damp or corrosive location?
