SDC GL260MRAHD – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the SDC GateLok fit my chain link gate posts?
The GL160 GateLok is built for 3 inch fence posts and 2 inch gate posts, with adaptability for smaller sizes. It mortises into the post, so it works on manual or automatic chain link, tubular steel and wrought iron gates, sliding or swinging. If your posts are larger than 3 inch fence / 2 inch gate, this is not the right lock for that opening.
2) Should I use an electric gate lock or a magnetic lock on a perimeter gate?
A mag lock holds on friction and needs a flat, aligned armature face, which outdoor gates rarely give you as they sag and swing. The GateLok throws a positive mechanical bolt instead, and SDC states it delivers higher security than electromagnetic locks. It also has automatic relock switches that hold the bolt retracted until the gate is actually closed, so the bolt is not firing into the frame on a gate that has not seated. For a chain link or tubular steel perimeter gate, the bolt lock is the one built for the job.
3) Do I order the GateLok fail-safe or fail-secure, and can I change it later?
Both are on the model list, so you pick at order time: the GL160AI and GL163AI are fail-safe, the GL260AH, GL260MRAH and GL263AH are fail-secure. Fail-safe unlocks when power drops, fail-secure stays locked. SDC also lists the fail-safe/fail-secure setting as field selectable, so an installer has adjustment on site. For an egress gate off a parking lot you generally want fail-safe; for a perimeter or yard gate that must stay locked in an outage, fail-secure.
4) How do I get out through the gate if the power fails on a fail-secure gate lock?
Order the GL260MRAH. It is the fail-secure GateLok with a mechanical release, so the bolt can be retracted by hand with no power at the lock. The other fail-secure models, GL260AH and GL263AH, have no mechanical release, and GL263AH releases by keyswitch instead. If the gate is on a route people have to leave through, the mechanical release version or a fail-safe model is the one to spec.
5) Can I monitor whether the gate lock is actually locked from my access control panel?
Two monitoring options are ordered on the GateLok, independently of each other. Bolt Position Status (BPS) reports whether the bolt itself is thrown or retracted. Door Position Switch (DPS) reports whether the gate is closed. You can take neither, either one, or both on any of the five models. If your head end needs to prove the gate is both shut and locked, order BPS and DPS together, because a gate reading closed is not the same as a gate reading locked.
6) What voltage does the SDC GL160 gate lock run on?
24VDC is the standard configuration, and the GateLok is field selectable dual voltage, so the installer sets it at the lock rather than ordering a different part. It also has built-in voltage and current spike protection, which matters on a long outdoor run off a shared gate operator supply.
7) Is the SDC GateLok handed, and can I flip it on site?
Handing is field reversible on the GateLok, so one part covers a left or right hand gate and you are not ordering by hand. That is useful for a property manager stocking a spare for a run of gates that do not all swing the same way.
8) Will an SDC GateLok hold up outdoors year round?
The GL Series is built for exterior use: heavy gauge weatherized steel housing with stainless steel bolts. The housing shields the internals from moisture and environmental exposure and the stainless bolts resist corrosion. The piece that makes it work with an operator is the automatic relock function: the relock switches keep the bolt retracted until the gate reaches the closed position, so the bolt is not driving into a moving or misaligned gate as the operator cycles. Add DPS if the operator or access panel needs a closed-gate signal back.
10) What is the difference between the SDC GL160AI and the GL163AI?
Both are fail-safe GateLok gate locks. The GL163AI adds an integral keyswitch, so the lock can be released with a key at the gate itself instead of only from an access control input or remote release. Pick the GL163AI where staff or a service crew need to get through without a credential reader or a call to the office. The same split runs on the fail-secure side between the GL260AH and the keyswitch GL263AH.
