SECURITRON BPS LINEAR BOX POWER SUPPLY

The BPS series single voltage power supplies deliver linear technology recommended by most manufacturers of sensitive electronic access control and security components. Safe for use with readers, electric strikes, and maglocks, these units interface to fire alarm systems and provide battery backup. The BPS power supplies provide 12 VDC or 24 VDC output with a variety of amp sizes that support small or large power needs.

Recommended where an interface with a fire alarm system or battery backup is needed. The BPS linear power supply delivers more current than PSPs, and all BPS models are UL Class 2 listed, allowing for wire runs without the use of conduit from power supply to door.

Securitron BPS-24-6 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do I size a Securitron BPS power supply for a bank of maglocks and card readers?
Pick the voltage your locks need first, then total the current draw of everything on the run and add headroom. The BPS series is single voltage: 12VDC models run BPS-12-1 (1A), BPS-12-3 (3A), BPS-12-45 (4.5A), BPS-12-6 (6A), BPS-12-9 (9A) and BPS-12-15 (15A), and 24VDC models run BPS-24-1 (1A), BPS-24-2 (2A), BPS-24-3 (3A), BPS-24-4 (4A), BPS-24-6 (6A) and BPS-24-10 (10A). There is no dual-voltage BPS, so a mixed 12V and 24V job needs two supplies. Readers, electric strikes and maglocks are all within what the linear output is intended for.
2) Does the Securitron BPS drop the locks on a fire alarm?
It will, once it is wired to the panel. The BPS comes with terminals for a fire alarm relay connection, and activating the alarm releases every device fed by that supply. That is the main reason to specify a BPS over a plug-in supply on a door that has to unlock for egress under alarm.
3) Do I need conduit from the power supply to the door with a Securitron BPS?
No. All BPS models are UL Class 2 listed, so the run from the supply out to the door can be made without conduit. That is a real labour saving on a retrofit where you are fishing wire through finished walls.
4) Is a battery included with the Securitron BPS for backup power?
No battery ships with it. The BPS has sealed lead acid-gel battery charging capability built in, but you buy the battery separately and size it to your load and the standby time you need. Budget for that when you quote the job.
5) How many doors can one Securitron BPS supply feed on separate circuits?
Depends on the model. The BPS ships with 1, 4 or 8 polyswitch (PTC) 2A circuit breakers depending on which one you order, and each protected zone has an LED showing voltage or no voltage. Every model except the 1 amp ones also has slide switches so you can cut a single load off the supply without pulling the whole board down, which is how you troubleshoot one bad door at 2am without locking down the building.
6) Will a Securitron BPS pass an AHJ inspection in New York City?
The BPS carries MEA City of New York approval, along with UL/cUL, CSFM, ANSI/UL 294 Listed and CSA-C22.2 No.205 Listed. That set covers the usual asks from a fire marshal or building department reviewing an access control power supply, and the CSA listing is what you need for Canadian jobs.
7) Can one Securitron BPS run both 12V strikes and 24V maglocks?
No. Each BPS is a single voltage supply, either 12VDC or 24VDC, so a mixed opening needs one supply per voltage. Check the coil voltage on every lock before you order, because a 24V maglock on a 12V supply will not hold and a 12V strike on 24V will cook.
8) Should I use a linear power supply or a switching supply for access control?
Linear is what most makers of sensitive electronic access control and security gear ask for, and that is what the BPS is. Switching supplies inject more electrical noise, which is what gets blamed when a reader reads erratically or a controller resets for no reason. If the load is readers, controllers or other active electronics, the clean linear output is the safer call. The tradeoff is size and weight: a linear supply is a heavier steel box.
9) What input power does a Securitron BPS need, and where can I mount it?
Feed it 120VAC. Operating range is +32 to +105F (0 to +40C), so it belongs indoors in a conditioned or at least heated space, not an unheated exterior closet or a rooftop mechanical enclosure in a cold climate. The housing is steel and the unit is rated commercial.
10) What is the difference between a Securitron BPS and a PSP power supply?
Current, mainly. The BPS linear supply delivers more current than the PSP line, and it is the one to specify when you need a fire alarm interface or battery backup on the same box. For a single low-draw device with no alarm tie-in and no standby requirement, the smaller supply is the simpler part.
11) What is the highest amperage Securitron BPS available?
At 12VDC the top of the range is the BPS-12-15 at 15 amps, and at 24VDC it is the BPS-24-10 at 10 amps. Those cover a large multi-door system off one enclosure. At the small end the BPS-12-1 and BPS-24-1 are 1 amp, which suits a single strike or maglock, though note the 1 amp units skip the load disconnect slide switches.
12) Can I swap in the ACSI 1406BB where a 24VDC maglock supply is called for?
Check the voltage the opening actually needs before treating the two as interchangeable. The Securitron BPS is built in both 12VDC and 24VDC forms across its amperage range, from BPS-24-1 at 24VDC 1A up to BPS-24-10 at 24VDC 10A, and the 12VDC line runs BPS-12-1 through BPS-12-15. The ACSI 1406BB is a 1400 Series power supply, so confirm its output rating against the lock or strike load before substituting. For a maglock run where a UL Class 2 listed supply lets you pull wire from the supply to the door without conduit, the BPS models are the ones that carry that listing.
13) Is the Securitron BPS output regulated and filtered, or do I need a separate filter?
Regulated and filtered at the supply, on every model in the range from the BPS-12-1 through the BPS-24-10. Nothing further is needed between the supply and the electronics.
14) What other brand of access control power supply does ZenSupply carry besides Securitron?
The ACSI 1406BB from the 1400 Series is the other access control power supply stocked. Where the decision comes down to a fire alarm relay interface, onboard battery charging, or a UL Class 2 listing that lets you skip conduit on the door run, those are things the BPS states outright.
