Securitron AQD1-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How many doors can a Securitron AQS1210 power supply run?
The AQS1210 puts out 10 amps at 12VDC and supports up to 16 independently controlled power limited outputs, so the real limit is your total current draw, not the output count. Add up the holding current of every lock on the circuit, leave headroom for inrush on strikes and mag locks, and stay under 10A. If you are running 24V devices, this is the wrong unit; it is a single voltage 12VDC supply.
2) Does the Securitron AQS1210 have a fire alarm interface for mag locks?
It does. The AQS1210 carries a fire alarm relay, available either as a single relay fire trigger for the whole supply or as individually triggered relayed outputs so you can drop selected doors only. That is what lets mag locks on an egress path release on alarm, which is the code driver behind specifying a supervised supply in the first place.
3) Will the Securitron AQS1210 keep locks powered during a power outage?
It has an integrated battery charging circuit, so with batteries added it runs the doors through an outage. The charging circuit is built to prevent overvoltage reaching the locking devices, and there is a low battery cutoff at 9V on the 12V output so the batteries are not drained flat. Batteries are sized to your load and run time and are a separate order.
4) What is the closest equivalent to the Securitron AQS1210 if I need 24VDC at 10 amps instead of 12VDC?
The Securitron AQS1210 is a 12VDC switching power supply rated 10 amps. For the same 10 amp capacity at 24VDC, the Altronix AL1024ULACMCB is a power supply and access power controller with 115VAC 60Hz input at 4.2A, eight PTC outputs, and 24VDC at 10A in a grey enclosure. Both land at 10 amps; the difference is output voltage, so confirm which your locking devices require before ordering.
5) Will the Securitron AQS1210 run motorized latch retraction exit devices, or do I need a dedicated supply?
Motorized latch retraction draws a high inrush and is normally fed from a supply built for it: the BEST RPSMLR2 is a power supply specifically for motorized latch retraction exit devices. Delayed egress devices likewise have a purpose-built option in the BEST PS161-6, a 120V input, 12/24V output supply with 6A capacity. The Securitron AQS1210 is a general purpose 12VDC 10 amp supervised switching supply with up to 16 independently controlled power limited outputs, so verify the exit device manufacturer's power requirement before you spec it in place of those.
6) Can I mount the AQS1210 in an unconditioned electrical room or parking garage?
Operating range is -4 to 122 degrees F (-20 to 50 C), which covers most unconditioned back-of-house and garage locations in temperate climates. It also has thermal shutdown protection with auto restart, so a hot enclosure backs it off rather than killing it permanently. Keep it inside a dry, protected location.
7) Is the AQS1210 stable on a building with dirty or sagging incoming power?
It tolerates brownout or overvoltage input of plus or minus 15 percent of nominal, so voltage swings that would drop a lesser supply will not take the doors offline. The switching topology runs up to 90 percent efficient, which means less waste heat in the enclosure. A circuit breaker handles overcurrent and reverse battery faults instead of a fuse you have to carry spares for.
8) Is the AQS1210 overkill for a single door? What smaller power supplies are there?
For one or two openings, 10 amps is far more supply than you need. ZenSupply carries smaller units for that: the Von Duprin PS902 base supply is 2A and field selectable 12 or 24VDC, the RCI DKPS-2A gives 8 outputs at 12/24VDC and 2A, and the SDC 632 is a 2 amp regulated supply with dual voltage selection. Step up to the AQS1210 when you are feeding a bank of mag locks or a whole floor of strikes from one cabinet.
9) I need a single 12VDC supply for one electric strike, not a 10 amp panel like the AQS1210. What should I use?
For a single device, the ROFU 9126T is a plug in mini power supply rated 12VDC at 1.5A with a built in time delay, and the ROFU 9102-12D UL is a 12VDC power supply with 10/120VAC 60Hz input. The Securitron AQS1210 is a 10 amp supervised switching supply with an integrated battery charger and fire alarm relay, which is more platform than a single strike needs.
10) What is the difference between the Securitron AQS1210 and a linear power supply like the SDC 634?
The AQS1210 is a switching power supply, single voltage 12VDC at 10 amps, rated up to 90 percent efficiency with thermal shutdown and auto restart. The SDC 634 is a 4 amp regulated and filtered low voltage supply with dual voltage selection, and the same family scales down through the SDC 632 at 2 amps, the SDC 631 at 1.5 amps, and the SDC 620 at 1 amp. Switching topology runs cooler at high current; linear regulated supplies are common on smaller single- or two-door loads.
11) Is the Command Access PS210 a substitute for the Securitron AQS1210?
No. The Command Access PS210 is a UL 6E/CSA linear power supply rated 1.5A at 24VDC with boost circuitry, and the Command Access PS1 is a 24VDC linear supply with 1 amp output. Both are 24 volt, low amperage units. The Securitron AQS1210 is single voltage 12VDC at 10 amps, so neither matches it on voltage or capacity.
12) I need battery backup with my power supply. Does the AQS1210 cover that, or should I look at another model?
The Securitron AQS1210 has an integrated battery charging circuit that prevents overvoltage on locking devices, with low battery cutoff at 9V on 12 volt operation. If you need backup at much lower current, the Adams Rite PS-1 is a regulated 1 amp 12/24VDC supply with battery backup, and the Command Access PS204/204B is a linear supply rated 2A at 24VDC with battery backup. The Detex 10-800 is a universal logic controller with a 120VAC/24VDC supply and battery backup where door logic is also needed.
13) Is the Securitron AQS1210 suitable for commercial and institutional buildings?
It is a commercial rated access control power supply, not a residential plug-in unit. Supervised operation, a fire alarm relay and UL listing are what facilities and MRO buyers standardize on for schools, hospitals and multi-family back-of-house. For a small single-door residential or light-duty job, a plug-in unit like the ROFU 9126T mini supply at 12VDC 1.5A with time delay is the more appropriate scale.
14) Is the AQS1210 a linear or switching power supply, and does it matter?
Switching. That is why it reaches up to 90 percent efficiency, which cuts waste heat in the cabinet and load on the branch circuit compared with a linear supply of the same output. Linear units in the same category, like the Command Access PS204/204B at 2A 24VDC, are typically specified at much lower amperages; at 10 amps a switching design is what keeps the enclosure from cooking.
