Securitron AQL104-R8E1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Securitron AQL104 power 24 VDC maglocks and electric strikes, and how much load can it carry?
The AQL104 is a single voltage switching supply putting out 24 VDC at 10 amps, so it will run a bank of 24 volt maglocks, strikes, or electrified trim off one board. Input is 120 or 230 VAC. Check the total draw of everything you are hanging on it against that 10 amp budget, including any locks you expect to be energized at the same time.
2) Can the Securitron AQL104 run 12 volt locks as well as 24 volt?
Not on its own. The AQL104 board is a single voltage unit at 24 VDC. To get a second voltage out of it you order it with the B100 secondary voltage module, which is one of the build options on the AQL104. If you have a mixed 12 and 24 volt opening list, spec the B100 version rather than assuming the base board will field-select down.
3) Does the Securitron AQL104 come in an enclosure or is it just the board?
Both ways. You pick either board only with no enclosure, or the board fitted in the E1 enclosure. Order board-only if you are dropping it into an existing access control cabinet or a rack you already have; take the E1 if this is a standalone install and you need a housing, since no enclosure ships with the board-only build.
4) How many door outputs can I get out of a Securitron AQL104?
Up to 16 outputs in the standard enclosure. You get there with R8 power relay modules, and the AQL104 is ordered with none, one R8, two (2R8), or three (3R8) fitted from the factory. Each R8 adds a block of individually controlled outputs, so count your doors before you pick the module quantity rather than buying the bare board and sorting it out on site.
5) Does the Securitron AQL104 drop the locks on a fire alarm signal?
Yes. There is an integrated Fire Alarm Interface that shuts down the main output, and when R8 output modules are fitted it can disconnect on a per-output basis instead of killing everything at once. That matters on a building where only the stair or cross-corridor doors need to release and you want the rest of the access control to stay live.
6) Does the Securitron AQL104 have battery backup, and what happens when the power goes out?
On AC loss it auto-switches to battery instantly, so the locks do not blink. It carries a dedicated fast battery charger on its own circuit, which Securitron calls LockSafe and which keeps lock current off the charging path so the locks run cooler. Low battery cutoff protects the batteries from deep discharge. Batteries themselves are a separate order.
7) What do I need to specify when ordering a Securitron AQL104?
Three choices decide the part. Enclosure: board only, or board with the E1 enclosure. Power relay modules: none, R8 for one, 2R8 for two, or 3R8 for three, which sets how many individually controlled outputs you get up to a ceiling of 16. Secondary voltage: no, or the B100 module if you need a voltage other than the 24 VDC the board produces. Sort the door count and the voltage mix first, then the enclosure follows from where it is mounting.
8) What is the closest equivalent to a Securitron AQL104 at 24VDC 10 amps?
The Altronix AL1024ULACMCB is the nearest match in the group: it is a power supply and access power controller with 24VDC output at 10A, 115VAC 60Hz input at 4.2A, 8 PTC outputs, in a grey enclosure. The AQL104 is also a 24VDC supply rated 10 amps, with a fire alarm relay, and it can be ordered as a board only or with the E1 enclosure. If the panel schedule calls for 10 amps at 24 volts, both land on that number; the AQL104 differs in that output expansion is done with R8, 2R8 or 3R8 power relay modules rather than fixed PTC outputs.
9) I only need to power one or two maglocks, not a whole floor. What is a smaller alternative to the AQL104?
Several smaller 24VDC supplies cover a single opening or two. The Command Access PS1 is a 24VDC linear power supply with 1 amp output; the PS204/204B gives 2A at 24VDC with battery backup; the PS210 is a UL 6E/CSA linear supply with 1.5A at 24VDC and boost circuitry. The SDC 632 is a 2 amp regulated and filtered supply with dual voltage selection, and the SDC 634 steps that to 4 amps. The AQL104 is built for the other end of the range at 10 amps and 24VDC, expandable with R8 power relay modules, so it makes sense where one supply feeds many doors rather than one.
10) Is the Securitron AQL104 UL listed?
The AQL series switching power supplies are UL listed, and Securitron publishes both a UL certification and a CE Declaration of Conformity for them. The auxiliary output is Class 2 power limited. Securitron also supports mix and match UL listing across the modules, so adding R8 relay modules or the B100 does not push you outside the listing.
11) Can I monitor a Securitron AQL104 power supply over the network?
It is network monitoring ready, and with the optional Netlink module you get AC line voltage monitoring, remote battery monitoring and testing, email fault reporting, and 1000 event data recording. That is the reason a facilities or security group picks the AQL over a basic transformer supply: you find out the batteries are failing before a power outage tells you.
12) What is the difference between the Securitron AQL104 and the Altronix AL1024ULACMCB?
They land in the same place on paper: the Altronix AL1024ULACMCB is 24 VDC at 10 amps with 8 PTC outputs in a grey enclosure, input 115VAC 60Hz at 4.2A. The AQL104 is also 24 VDC at 10 amps but expands to 16 outputs via R8 relay modules, adds a B100 module for a second voltage, and is network monitoring ready with the Netlink option. If you want remote battery testing and fault email, the AQL is the one built for it. If you want a fixed 8-output board and enclosure done, the Altronix covers it.
13) Is a 10 amp power supply overkill for one or two electrified doors?
Usually, yes. The AQL104 at 10 amps is sized for a multi-door system with relay modules and battery backup. For a single opening or a small job, ZenSupply carries much smaller supplies: the Von Duprin PS902 is a 2 amp 12/24 VDC field selectable base unit, the Command Access PS204/204B is 2A at 24VDC with battery backup, and the SDC 620 Series is a 1 amp regulated dual-voltage supply. Step up to the AQL104 when you are feeding a bank of doors off one cabinet or you need the fire alarm interface and network monitoring.
14) Is a Detex 10-800 a substitute for an AQL104?
They are not the same class of device. The Detex 10-800 is a universal logic controller with a 120VAC/24VDC power supply and battery backup, so the supply is bundled with control logic for the opening. The Securitron AQL104 is a 24VDC 10 amp switching power supply, expanded with R8, 2R8 or 3R8 power relay modules and offered board only or with the E1 enclosure. Choose the 10-800 when the sequencing logic is the point; choose the AQL104 when you need distributed 24 volt power to multiple locks.
15) What looks like a power supply substitute but will not replace an AQL104?
Three in the group are easy to misread. The ROFU 10305-LA is a power transfer hinge rated 1.5A at 42V, tamper resistant, in a plastic white finish - it moves power through the door rather than generating it. The Command Access CAT Field Tester is a portable 12-24VDC supply that runs off DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee batteries, built for bench and field testing. The ROFU 9126T is a plug in mini power supply, 12 VDC at 1.5A with time delay. None of them stand in for a 24VDC 10 amp supply feeding a bank of openings.
16) I need a UL listed supply for an access control kit. How does the Aiphone AC-PS1250 compare to the AQL104?
The Aiphone AC-PS1250 is a UL listed 12V DC 5A supply made for Aiphone AC Series access control kits, so it is matched to that system. The Securitron AQL104 is a UL listed 24VDC switching supply at 10 amps with an integrated fire alarm interface, and it can be ordered board only or with the E1 enclosure and one to three R8 power relay modules. Match the voltage to the locks first: 12 volt hardware points to the AC-PS1250, 24 volt hardware to the AQL104.
17) What temperature range can a Securitron AQL power supply be installed in?
Operating range is 0 to 49 degrees C. That is an indoor, conditioned-space rating. A mechanical room or an electrical closet is fine; an unheated garage, a rooftop cabinet, or an exterior wall in a cold climate is outside what the AQL is rated for.
18) How do I avoid wiring 24 volt locks to a 12 volt power supply by mistake?
The AQL boards use Securitron OutSmart technology, a dual-color LED that shows the voltage the board is set to: green for 12 V, blue for 24 V. The AQL104 is the 24 VDC model, so you should be seeing blue. It is a quick visual check at the cabinet before an installer lands lock leads and cooks a strike coil.
19) Is the Securitron AQL104 a commercial-rated power supply or something for residential use?
It is a commercial product, and the build reflects it: 120 or 230 VAC input, Class 2 power limited auxiliary output, a fire alarm interface, and up to 91 percent efficiency on the switching design. Switching rather than linear is why it can deliver 10 amps without the heat and bulk a linear supply of that size would bring into an electrical closet.
20) What is the difference between a power supply like the AQL104 and a control module like the BEST ELR150?
The BEST ELR150 is a power supply control module for electronic access control - it conditions and switches power for the opening rather than being the source. The Securitron AQL104 is the source: a 24VDC 10 amp switching power supply with a fire alarm relay, expandable up to 16 outputs using R8 power relay modules. On many jobs a control module sits downstream of a supply like the AQL104 rather than replacing it.
21) For a single door retrofit where I do not want a large enclosure, what 24 volt supply should I use instead of an AQL104?
The SDC 620 is a 1 amp regulated and filtered low voltage supply with dual voltage selection, and the SDC 631 is a 1.5 amp regulated and filtered DC power controller, also dual voltage. The ROFU 9102-12D UL/9102-24D runs on 10/120VAC 60Hz input. Any of those suits one opening. The AQL104 is a commercial 24VDC unit at 10 amps and can be ordered board only where it is going into an existing can, which is the other way to keep the footprint down.
