1) Can the Securitron BPSS solar power supply run a maglock or other fail safe lock on a gate?
No. The BPSS is built for fail secure electric locks on intermittent duty only. Output is a maximum of 125mA continuous, with 450mA peak while the lock is actually operating. A maglock or any fail safe device draws current continuously to stay locked, so it would flatten the battery. For a continuous-duty lock you need an AC-fed supply such as the Von Duprin PS902 or an SDC 632 2 amp regulated supply.
2) What voltage does the Securitron BPSS put out, and will it run my card reader or keypad?
The BPSS is a 12VDC system, with the solar controller putting out 14.4VDC maximum while charging. It is designed to power a single point of access control, so most 12V keypads and card readers run off it alongside the fail secure lock. Check that your reader's standby draw fits inside the 125mA continuous budget, since the reader is powered all day and the lock only at release.
3) Can the BPSS enclosure and solar panel mount to a gate post?
Yes. Mounting brackets for both the enclosure and the solar panel come in the box, and both sets take a pole or post up to 2 inches in diameter. If your post is 3 inches, order the PMK-3 pole mounting kit. For high wind sites there is the SWK high wind kit for the 20 watt panel.
4) I have no AC power at a remote gate. What are my options for powering an electric lock there?
If there is genuinely no line power, the BPSS is the option, because every other common access control supply expects an AC feed. The Adams Rite PS-1, ROFU 9102 and Altronix AL1024ULACMCB all run from mains and only use batteries as backup, not as the primary source. Trenching in power and using one of those gives you continuous duty and the ability to run maglocks. Going solar with the BPSS keeps you to fail secure locks on intermittent duty.
5) What should I use instead of the Securitron BPSS solar power supply when AC line power is available at the door?
The BPSS is built for sites with no line power - it runs a single access control point and a fail secure lock from a solar panel and battery, with 12VDC output and a maximum of 125mA continuous. Where 120VAC is already at the opening, an AC-fed supply is the simpler path: the Von Duprin PS902 is a 2A base power supply, field selectable 12 or 24VDC, for access control, and the ROFU 9102-12D UL / 9102-24D runs on 10/120VAC 60Hz input. Both remove the solar array and the daily-operations budget that solar imposes.
6) The BPSS only supports one lock - what do I use for a multi-door access control panel?
The Securitron BPSS powers most any single point access control device and one fail secure lock on intermittent duty. For several doors off one enclosure, look at multi-output AC supplies: the RCI DKPS-2A gives 8 outputs at 12/24VDC and 2A, and the Altronix AL1024ULACMCB is a power supply and access power controller with 8 PTC outputs, 24VDC at 10A, from a 115VAC 60Hz 4.2A input. Those require line power at the enclosure, which the BPSS does not.
7) Can the Securitron BPSS run a motorized latch retraction exit device or a delayed egress device?
No. The BPSS is rated for a maximum 125mA continuous and 450mA while operating the lock, intermittent duty only, so it suits fail secure locks with brief draws. Motorized latch retraction and delayed egress hardware need dedicated high-current supplies: the BEST RPSMLR2 is built for motorized latch retraction exit devices, and the BEST PS161-6 is a delayed egress supply with 120V input, 12/24V output and 6A capacity.
8) My gate hardware is 24VDC - can I use the BPSS?
The BPSS output is 12VDC, with the solar controller putting out 14.4VDC maximum, so it pairs with 12V fail secure hardware. For 24V devices, the SDC 631 Series is a 1.5 amp regulated and filtered DC power controller with dual voltage selection, the Command Access PS1 Series is a 24VDC linear supply with 1 amp output, and the Command Access PS210 is a UL 6E/CSA linear supply at 1.5A at 24VDC with boost circuitry. Those are line powered rather than solar.
9) Is the Securitron BPSS rated for outdoor mounting in cold weather?
It is an outdoor system. The enclosure is NEMA-3R and measures 12-1/2 x 13-5/8 x 4-7/16 inches, rated for operation from -4 to +113F (-20 to +45C). The solar panels themselves handle a wider band, -40 to +185F (-40 to +85C). Below -4F the electronics are outside their stated operating range, so hard northern winters need that considered.
10) Can a solar access control supply be used in a hazardous location?
The BPSS solar controller is approved for hazardous locations, Class 1, Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D. It is 100% solid state, fully encapsulated in epoxy potting, in an anodized aluminum case with marine rated terminals, which is what gets it there. That applies to the controller as specified.
11) How many lock releases per day will the Securitron BPSS support?
There is no fixed number. Daily lock operations vary with solar activity at the site and with the current draw of the lock and reader you connect. The output ceiling is 125mA continuous and 450mA during the release. Size the system by picking the 20 watt, 18Ah version for higher traffic or poorer sun, and the 10 watt, 9Ah version for light use in strong sun.
12) Does the BPSS come with the solar panel and battery, or do I buy those separately?
It ships complete. BPSS-10 includes the 12V supply with a 10 watt panel and 9Ah battery; BPSS-20 includes the 20 watt panel and 18Ah battery. Mounting brackets for both the enclosure and the panel are in the box. 13) Is there a smaller, simpler 12V supply than the BPSS for an interior strike?

The BPSS answers a different problem - it is an outdoor NEMA-3R enclosure, 12-1/2 by 13-5/8 by 4-7/16 inches, with panel and pole brackets for gates and out buildings where no power run exists.
14) What looks like an alternative to the BPSS but will not power a remote gate lock?
Two items get grouped with it and should not be. The Command Access CAT Field Tester is a 12-24VDC portable power supply that runs off DeWalt, Makita and Milwaukee batteries - a bench and troubleshooting tool, not a permanent installed source. The ROFU 10305-LA/10306-LA is a power transfer hinge rated 1.5A at 42V, which carries conductors from frame to door and generates nothing. The Securitron BPSS is the complete out of the box solar system with panel, controller, battery and enclosure.
15) Does the BPSS include logic or relay control for the access system, or do I need a separate controller?
The BPSS controller is a solid state solar charge controller in an anodized aluminum case with marine rated terminals, a green charging LED and low voltage battery monitoring - it manages charging, not door logic. If the opening needs sequencing or relay control, the Detex 10-800 Series is a universal logic controller with 120VAC/24VDC power supply and battery backup, and the BEST ELR150 Series is a power supply control module for electronic access control.
16) I need more current than the BPSS provides at a remote building - what are my options?
The BPSS tops out at 125mA continuous and 450mA during lock operation. If the load is larger, the site needs line power and a bigger supply: the SDC 632 Series is a 2 amp regulated and filtered low voltage supply with dual voltage selection, the SDC 634 Series is the 4 amp version, and the Aiphone AC-PS1250 is a UL listed 12VDC 5A supply for AC Series access control kits.
