SECURITRON PSM POWER SUPPLY MONITOR

The PSM Series is for use with larger DC power supplies. They operate with all BPS supplies of 2 Amps or more and act as a power supply alarm system, monitoring all key functions and reporting any trouble. The output voltage is read to ensure it remains within tight limits for proper float charging of the battery pack.

The PSM Series works with most BPS power supplies when real-time power and battery status information is critical. Compatible with all BPS supplies of two amps or more, the PSM acts as a power supply alarm system, monitoring all key functions and reporting any trouble. This unit constantly monitors its output voltage to ensure it remains within tight limits for proper float charging of the battery pack.

1) Which Securitron PSM model do I order, the PSM-12 or the PSM-24?
Match the monitor to the DC voltage of the power supply it is watching. The PSM-12 is for 12VDC systems and is recommended on supplies of 3 amps or greater (BPS-12-3, BPS-12-45, BPS-12-6, BPS-12-9, BPS-12-15). The PSM-24 is for 24VDC systems at 2 amps or greater (BPS-24-2, BPS-24-3, BPS-24-4, BPS-24-6, BPS-24-10). There is no dual-voltage version; those are the only two models.
2) What does the Securitron PSM actually monitor and alarm on?
It acts as a power supply alarm system for the whole BPS system. It reads output voltage continuously to confirm it stays within tight limits for proper float charging of the battery pack, monitors and tests the DC output under load, and load tests the battery pack every 8 hours. Trouble is reported with both an audible and a visual alarm, so a tech at the panel sees and hears the fault.
3) How much current does the PSM draw off the power supply I am adding it to?
Budget 250mA at 12VDC or 200mA at 24VDC. The monitor takes its power from the corresponding power supply, so subtract that draw from the amperage you have left for locks and strikes when sizing the system.
4) Can the Securitron PSM be installed in an unheated mechanical room or exterior cabinet?
Its rated operating range is +32 to +105F (0 to +40C), so an interior mechanical or electrical room is fine but an uninsulated exterior enclosure that drops below freezing is outside the range.
5) Is a power supply monitor worth adding if my access control system already has battery backup?
Battery backup only helps if the batteries are actually good when the power drops. The PSM load tests the pack every 8 hours and alarms on trouble, so a failed battery or a supply drifting out of float-charge range gets flagged instead of being discovered during an outage.
