The 30-3402 is a pre-assembled grounding pigtail: a 6.5 inch length of 12 AWG solid copper wire with a loop on one end, a ground screw already on it, and a stripped end on the other. You drive the screw into the metal box's ground hole, then land the stripped end on the device's green terminal or in a wirenut with the branch circuit grounds. It saves cutting, stripping and looping a tail on site for every box.

No. The screw on the 30-3402 tail is thread-forming and hole-finding, so it cuts its own thread in an untapped 10-32 style ground hole in a steel box or bracket. The head takes slotted, Phillips, hex and #2 Robertson drivers, so whatever bit is already in your gun will seat it.

For a standard single-gang device box, 6.5 inches gives you enough to reach the receptacle or switch ground terminal plus a little slack to fold the device back in. On deep multi-gang or 4-11/16 square boxes with a lot of conductors, plan on splicing to a longer pigtail rather than stretching the tail across the box.

The 30-3402 tail is built to meet Article 250 of the National Electrical Code, the grounding and bonding article, when the box is bonded with the supplied ground screw and the tail is connected to the device or the grounding conductors. Local amendments and the inspector always govern the finished install.

The ground screw is meant to thread into the ground hole of a metal box or metal bracket to bond it; a nonmetallic box has nothing to bond, so the equipment ground goes straight to the device's green terminal and you do not need a tail at all.
