1) Will the SOSS 203 invisible hinge work on a 1-3/8 inch or 1-3/4 inch door?
No. The 203 Series is built for material 3/4 inch to 1 inch thick, and 3/4 inch is the hard minimum. A standard 1-3/8 inch interior door or a 1-3/4 inch commercial door is too thick for it, and you need a larger SOSS invisible hinge sized for that thickness instead. The 1-3/4 inch in the name is the hinge size, not the door it goes in, and that is where most of the ordering mistakes on this model start.
2) Is the SOSS 203 hinge strong enough for a full size entry or high traffic door?
It is a light duty hinge, and that is the limit to work to. The 203 is intended for cabinet doors, millwork panels, and light wood or metal doors in the 3/4 inch to 1 inch thickness range. Hanging a heavy or high cycle opening on it is the wrong application, even in a commercial building. For a full weight door, step up to an invisible hinge rated for a heavier duty level and a thicker door.
3) Can SOSS 203 invisible hinges be used on a fire rated door assembly?
No. The 203 Series carries no fire rating, so it does not belong on a rated opening. If the door is part of a rated assembly, everything in the prep has to be listed for it, and this hinge is not. Use it on non-rated cabinet, millwork, and light door work only.
4) Do SOSS 203 hinges drop into an existing butt hinge mortise?
They do not. An invisible hinge needs a routed pocket in the door edge and a matching pocket in the jamb, which is nothing like the shallow flat mortise a butt hinge leaf sits in. Plan on new prep in both the door and the frame. The hinge body uses radius corners, so the pockets are routed rather than chiseled square, and SOSS publishes a hinge location detail and a cased jamb detail for laying the cuts out.
5) How far does a SOSS 203 hinge open, and can the door swing both directions?
Full 180 degrees, in one direction. It is a single action hinge, so the door swings one way only, but it goes all the way flat back, which is what you want on a cabinet or a panel that has to clear the opening completely. If you need a door that pushes both ways, this is not the hinge for it.
6) How many SOSS 203 hinges come in an order, and are screws included?
One order is a pair, two hinges carded together, and wood screws come with them. If you are hanging into metal, the wood screws are no use to you and machine screws are ordered separately, so add them at the same time. The screw holes are not counterbored. Bulk buyers should know a container holds 10 pairs.
7) Can the SOSS 203 be used on a metal door or only on wood?
Both. The 203 is listed for cabinet, wood, and metal applications. What decides it is not the material but the thickness: you need at least 3/4 inch of solid material to take the mortise, and the hinge is sized for 3/4 inch to 1 inch. Because the hinge is fully concealed when the door is closed, finish only shows on the exposed knuckle when the door is open, so most people match the door pulls or the other hardware in the room. Unplated is the choice when the hinge is going somewhere it will never be seen or will be finished separately.
9) Is any part of a SOSS 203 hinge visible when the door is shut?
Nothing shows. The hinge buries in the door edge and the jamb, so with the door closed you see a plain gap and no hardware from either face. That is the whole point of the cabinet style invisible design, and it is why these get specified on millwork, casework, and flush panel work where a surface hinge would break the look. Open the door and only the working knuckle appears in the gap.
10) Does the SOSS 203 have a built in closer or a power transfer for an electrified lock?
Neither. The 203 is a mechanical hinge and nothing more: no self closing action, no electric power transfer, no electronic function. A door on these needs a separate closer if it has to close on its own, and any electrified hardware on the opening needs its own transfer device or a power transfer hinge in one of the other positions.
