1) Will the SOSS 220 invisible hinge work on a standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door?
No, 1-3/4 inch is too thin. The SOSS 220 Series needs material 2 inches thick or thicker to bury the hinge body, in wood or in metal, and 1-3/4 inch is the usual commercial leaf thickness (1-3/8 inch on older interior doors). At 5-1/2 inches it is the full size door style hinge, sized for full sized entry openings built at 2 inches or heavier. If your leaves measure under 2 inches, look for an invisible hinge rated down to that thickness instead of the 220.
2) Can the SOSS 220 invisible hinge be used on a hollow metal door and frame, or is it wood only?
Both. The 220 Series is listed for wood and metal, and each hinge comes with wood screws and machine screws, so you have the correct fastener for either substrate without sourcing anything extra. What rules an opening in or out is thickness, not material: whatever it mortises into, door and jamb alike, has to be 2 inches or thicker.
3) Is the SOSS 220 invisible hinge fire rated for use on a rated opening?
The 220 Series is not fire rated, so keep it off rated door assemblies. A rated opening has to be hung on hinges listed for that assembly, and substituting an unrated concealed hinge will fail an inspection. 4) What door and jamb prep does a SOSS 220 invisible hinge need, and do the mortise corners have to be squared?
Radius corner, so no chiseling. The 220 Series is a radius corner hinge, which means a router-cut pocket in the door edge and a matching one in the jamb take it exactly as the router leaves them. Both halves mortise in, which is what gives you the flush, concealed look with the door shut. Wood and machine screws ship with the hinge, so once the pockets are cut there is nothing else to buy to hang it.
5) Does a SOSS 220 invisible hinge swing both ways, and how far does the door open?
One direction only, and a full 180 degrees. It is a single action hinge, so the leaf swings one way and lays back flat against the wall at 180. For a door that has to push and pull from either side, a single action invisible hinge is the wrong part, and you want a double acting hinge or a center-hung pivot instead.
6) When should I use an invisible hinge like the SOSS 220 instead of standard butt hinges?
Use it when you do not want hardware showing. With the door closed nothing is visible on either face, which is why concealed hinges go on flush panel doors, executive offices, and architectural millwork where a butt hinge would break up the surface. No power transfer through this hinge. The 220 Series is mechanical, not electronic, and has no wiring path, so anything electrified on the opening, an electric strike, an electrified mortise lock, a card reader, needs a separate electric power transfer or door loop run through the jamb. There is no closer function in it either, so a closer is a separate line on the order.

Ten finishes: UNP unplated, 605 bright brass, 606 satin brass, 609 antique brass, 613L oil rubbed bronze lacquered, 618 bright nickel, 619 satin nickel, 622 matte black, 625 bright chrome, 626 satin chrome. Because the hinge disappears when the door is shut, the finish only reads on the door edge and jamb pocket with the door open, so match it to the lockset BHMA number on the same opening and it will never draw attention. UNP is supplied unplated.
