Spears 417-010 1 Schedule 40 PVC 45° Socket Elbow

The Spears 417-010 is a 1" Schedule 40 PVC 45° socket elbow designed to provide a dependable, corrosion-resistant directional change in PVC piping systems. Molded from rigid PVC compound, this fitting is engineered to match standard Schedule 40 pipe dimensions, making it a natural companion to Spears Schedule 40 PVC pipe and related fittings. The socket (SOC) connection style is designed for solvent-cement joining, producing a strong, permanent, leak-resistant bond when installed according to standard PVC solvent-welding practices. A 45° bend angle allows installers to redirect piping runs with less turbulence and pressure loss than a sharper 90° turn, making the 417-010 a practical choice anywhere a moderate change in direction is needed. Because PVC piping resists corrosion, scaling, and many common chemicals, this elbow is well suited to plumbing, irrigation, drain, and general industrial fluid-handling systems where long-term reliability is a priority.

Key Features

  • 1" Trade Size: Sized to match standard 1" Schedule 40 PVC pipe, ensuring proper fit and alignment within an existing or planned piping system.
  • Schedule 40 PVC Construction: Manufactured from rigid PVC compound rated for Schedule 40 applications, offering strong resistance to corrosion, rust, and chemical attack compared to metallic fittings.
  • Socket (SOC) End Connections: Both ends are configured for solvent-cement welding to Schedule 40 PVC pipe, creating a permanent, leak-tight joint when properly primed and cemented.
  • 45° Elbow Configuration: Provides a moderate directional change in the piping run, helping to reduce turbulence and pressure loss compared to a 90° elbow while still allowing flexible routing around obstacles.
  • Lightweight, Easy-to-Handle Design: PVC construction is significantly lighter than comparable metal fittings, simplifying cutting, fitting, and installation in the field.
  • Smooth Interior Bore: Helps maintain consistent flow characteristics through the directional change, supporting efficient fluid movement through the system.

Spears 417-007 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What sizes and bend angles do the Spears Schedule 40 PVC socket elbows come in?
Three bend angles are offered. In 90 degrees: 1/2 inch (406-005), 1 inch (406-010), 1-1/4 inch (406-012), 2 inch (406-020) and 4 inch (406-040). In 45 degrees: 1/2 inch (417-005), 3/4 inch (417-007), 1 inch (417-010), 1-1/4 inch (417-012), 2-1/2 inch (417-025), 3 inch (417-030) and 6 inch (417-060). The 22-1/2 degree elbow comes in 2 inch only (416-020). All are socket by socket for solvent cement.
2) Are these PVC elbows threaded or do they need to be glued?
They are socket (hub) end fittings, not threaded. Both ends take Schedule 40 PVC pipe and are joined with primer and PVC solvent cement, which makes a permanent, leak-tight weld. If you need a union you can take apart, or a transition to metal pipe, you need a threaded fitting instead, since nothing on a socket elbow accepts pipe thread.
3) Will a Spears Schedule 40 elbow fit Schedule 40 PVC pipe from another brand?
Yes. The socket dimensions are molded to standard Schedule 40 pipe OD, so a 1 inch socket takes any 1 inch Schedule 40 PVC pipe regardless of who made it. Schedule 80 PVC pipe of the same trade size has the same outside diameter, so it also fits the socket, though the fitting itself is a Schedule 40 fitting. Size by trade size, not by measuring the pipe OD.
4) Can I use these PVC elbows on a hot water line?
No. These are rigid PVC fittings, and PVC is a cold-water material. For hot water or elevated-temperature service you want CPVC fittings instead. The PVC elbows are intended for cold plumbing, irrigation and sprinkler piping, drain lines, and general industrial and agricultural fluid handling.
5) Should I use a 45 degree or a 90 degree PVC elbow on my run?
Use the 90 when you need a hard turn in tight space, such as coming off a wall or stubbing up. Two 45s make the same turn with less turbulence and less pressure loss, which matters on pump-fed irrigation and longer industrial runs where you are watching friction. The 22-1/2 degree, offered in 2 inch, is for gentle alignment corrections, offsets, and easing a run around an obstacle without upsetting flow.
6) I need a 3/4 inch 90 degree PVC elbow, is that one of these?
Not in 90 degrees. The 90 degree sizes run 1/2, 1, 1-1/4, 2 and 4 inch. In 3/4 inch the elbow offered is the 45 degree, part 417-007. For a 3/4 inch hard turn, either use two 417-007 fittings to make the 90, or source a 3/4 inch Spears 406-007.
7) What do I need besides the elbow to make the joint up?
The fitting ships bare, so plan on PVC primer and PVC solvent cement sized to the pipe diameter, plus a cutter or fine-tooth saw and a deburring tool to chamfer the pipe end. No gaskets, clamps, or thread sealant are involved, since the socket joint is a chemical weld, not a mechanical seal. On the larger sizes, 4 inch and 6 inch, use a heavy-bodied cement and allow for a two-person dry fit before you cement.
8) Is Schedule 40 PVC heavy enough for a pressure line, or do I need Schedule 80?
Schedule 40 is the common pressure-rated wall thickness for cold-water plumbing and irrigation mains, and these elbows are molded to Schedule 40 dimensions. Schedule 80, with its thicker wall, is what gets specified where working pressure is higher, the line is exposed to mechanical abuse, or an engineer calls it out, often in industrial chemical service. For the pressure rating at your specific size, the Spears Schedule 40 dimensions documentation is the reference, since rating drops as diameter increases.
9) What is the difference between Spears 406, 416 and 417 part numbers?
The prefix is the bend angle and the suffix is the trade size in tenths of an inch. 406 is the 90 degree socket elbow, 416 is the 22-1/2 degree, and 417 is the 45 degree. So 417-010 is a 1 inch 45 degree, 406-020 is a 2 inch 90 degree, and 417-060 is a 6 inch 45 degree. All three series are Schedule 40 PVC with socket ends.
10) Can I use a PVC 45 degree elbow on a DWV drain line?
These elbows are suited to drain service as well as pressure plumbing and irrigation. Be aware that a pressure socket elbow has a short-radius sweep compared with a DWV pattern fitting, so on sanitary drainage where code calls for a long-sweep or DWV-pattern bend, use the DWV part. For vents, condensate, and pump discharge, the Schedule 40 socket elbow is the normal choice.
11) Where do I find socket depth and laying length for these Spears Schedule 40 elbows?
Spears publishes a dimensions and weights sheet for the Schedule 40 fitting line, plus a Schedule 40 dimensions document and line brochure. Those are where you get center-to-end, socket depth, and weight per size, which is what you need for laying out a manifold or calculating how much pipe to cut once socket entry is subtracted.
