The 7908SBSP kit carries one punch and die each for 1/2", 3/4", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2", and 2" U.S. conduit sizes. The actual holes those cut run 0.885 inch (22.5 mm) up to 2.416 inch (61.4 mm), which is the oversize a conduit connector needs to seat, not the nominal trade size. If you need anything above 2 inch conduit, this kit will not get you there.
2) How thick a panel can the Greenlee Speed Punch kit go through?
Mild steel up to 10 gauge, 3.0 mm max. That covers typical enclosure, panelboard, and junction box wall thicknesses. The punches also work in aluminum, fiberglass, and plastic. Anything heavier than 10 gauge mild steel, or stainless, is outside what this kit is rated to cut.
3) Does the Greenlee 7908SBSP knockout kit come with a driver, or do I need to buy one?
The kit is the punch and die sets, draw studs, and case; you supply the power. It runs off Greenlee punch drivers, either the LS50L battery-powered driver or hydraulic drivers including the 10383 QUICK. If you already own one of those, this kit drops straight onto it.
4) What size pilot hole do I need to drill before using a Greenlee speed punch?
It depends which draw stud you use. With the 3/8 inch draw studs, drill a 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) pilot hole. With the 3/4 inch draw studs, you need a 7/8 inch (22.2 mm) pilot. The smaller studs handle the small conduit sizes and the 3/4 inch studs take the larger punches, so keep both step bits on the cart.
5) Which draw studs come in the Greenlee 7908SBSP kit, and when do I need the long ones?
Standard studs supplied are the 7212SP14 (3/8" x 3.8") and the 7212SP11 (3/4" x 4.8"). There are longer alternates, the 7212SP13 (3/8" x 4.7") and 7212SP12 (3/4" x 5.6"), specified for use with the 746 hydraulic ram. If you are driving with a 746, order the long studs separately.
6) What makes a Speed Punch different from a standard threaded knockout punch?
The Speed Punch uses a no-thread design, so the punch and die slip on and off the draw stud rather than threading onto it. That kills cross-threading, which is what usually destroys a draw stud, and cuts setup and teardown time. A traditional threaded knockout set is cheaper to replace piece by piece, but you spend the time spinning parts on every hole. On a panel with a dozen knockouts to cut, the no-thread system is the one that saves the labor.
7) Can I buy individual replacement punches if I wear one out?
Yes. The punches are sold as individual replacement parts by size: 7212SP-1/2P for the 1/2 inch, 7212SP-3/4P for the 3/4 inch, and 7212SP-1P for the 1 inch. You do not have to rebuy the whole 7908SBSP kit because the 3/4 inch punch dulled.
