1) Does the Square D LUCB control unit work on its own, or do I need a power base too?
The LUCB TeSys Ultra control unit is only the control and diagnostic module. It plugs into a TeSys U advanced power base (LUB320, LUB380, LUB32 or LUB38) to form a complete starter controller, so the base has to be ordered separately. It also works with the LU2B32FU and LU2B38FU reversing contactor breakers. Mounting is plug-in at the front face, so no extra hardware is needed to seat it.
2) Does the LUCB give me earth fault and phase loss protection, or just overload?
More than overload. The advanced control unit covers overload and short-circuit, earth fault, and phase failure and phase imbalance, with manual reset. That is the difference between the advanced unit and a plain thermal overload block, which only trips on overload.
3) What size three-phase motor can a TeSys U starter with the LUCB unit handle?
Up to 7.5kW at 400-440VAC, 9kW at 500VAC and 15kW at 690VAC, 50/60Hz, when the LUCB control unit is combined with a compatible TeSys U advanced power base.
