Stanley Security QED314 48 7 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the QED314 surface vertical rod exit device work on a pair of doors with no center mullion?
Yes. The QED314 is a surface vertical rod device, so it latches at the head and at the threshold rather than into a strike on the frame edge. That is what lets it secure a pair of doors without a center mullion. If you have a single door in a frame, or a pair where you can live with a removable mullion, a rim device like the QED311 (hex dogging) or QED312 (cylinder dogging) is the simpler install.
2) What is the minimum stile width for the dormakaba QED300 exit device?
3-7/8 inches (98mm) minimum stile. That rules it out on most narrow stile aluminum storefront doors, which typically run under that. Measure the flat face of the stile from the glass stop to the edge of the door before you order. On a wood or hollow metal door you will have the width without thinking about it.
3) Does the QED300 exit device need to be ordered left hand or right hand?
No handing to specify. All QED300 series exit devices ship non-handed and are field reversible, so one device covers either swing. That is useful for a property manager stocking a spare, since one unit on the shelf fits any door in the building.
4) Can the QED314 exit device be cut down for a 32 inch door?
Yes. The 36 inch device is field sizable down to a 32 inch door application (91.44cm to 81.28cm), so you do not need a special order for an undersized opening. Order the 36 inch (3ft) device and trim it on site. For wider openings, the 48 inch (4ft) device is the other size offered.
5) What door thickness does the dormakaba QED300 exit device fit?
1-3/4 inches standard (44.5mm), which is the normal commercial door thickness for wood, hollow metal, and aluminum leaves. If you are working on an older 1-3/8 inch interior door, this is not the device for that opening.
6) Is the QED314 exit device fire rated?
No. The QED314 is the hex dogging version, and dogging is not permitted on a fire door because the latch has to stay active. For a fire rated opening, order the QED316 (surface vertical rod fire rated) or, if you need the bottom rod removed, the QED319 (surface vertical rod less bottom rod fire rated). Fire rated devices ship with sex bolts as standard.
7) Will the QED300 latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latch bolt is stainless steel with a 3/4 inch throw (19mm), and the standard backset is 2-1/4 inches (57mm) to the face of the doorstop. A surface vertical rod device does not use an edge strike in the frame jamb, though, so it will not reuse a strike from an old rim or mortise lock. It needs a top strike at the head and a floor or threshold strike at the bottom, both of which come with the device. The strike is a stainless steel body with a plated steel roller.
8) What keyway can I get the QED300 exit trim cylinder in, and can I key it to my existing system?
Keyway choices on the QED300 are BF small format interchangeable core "F", KW Kwikset, WE Weiser, SC Schlage, GA Yale, and LA Sargent. There is also an LC less cylinder option, which is what most locksmiths order when the building runs its own keying and you are pinning to an existing master. Pick the keyway that matches the rest of the doors and the key already in the tenant's pocket still works.
9) How do I hold the door unlatched during business hours with hex-key dogging?
Hex-key dogging on the QED314 means you depress the push bar and turn an Allen wrench in the device to hold the latch retracted, so the door pushes open freely. Anyone with a hex key can undog it, which is fine for a back-of-house or tenant space. If you want the dogging under key control so only a keyholder can set it, order the QED315 instead, which is the cylinder dogging version of the same surface vertical rod device.
10) Can I get a QED300 vertical rod device without the bottom rod?
Yes, and it is worth doing where the floor is uneven, where a bottom rod would drag or collect dirt, or on an exterior door with a sloped threshold. Order the QED317 for less bottom rod with hex dogging, QED318 for less bottom rod with cylinder dogging, or QED319 for the fire rated less bottom rod version. The QED314 itself is the full top-and-bottom rod device with hex dogging.
11) What outside trim options are available for the dormakaba QED300 exit device?
Trim is a separate line item from the device, so specify it on the order. Styles are Sierra, Summit, and Slate. Escutcheon trim comes as dummy, passage, keyed, or night latch; pull plate trim comes as dummy, thumb-piece, night latch, or flat plate. Dummy is a pull only with no outside entry, night latch lets a key retract the latch for entry, and passage gives free entry from outside. Decide which openings need outside access before you order, because that choice is the trim function, not the device.
12) Is the dormakaba QED300 exit device Grade 1, and how many cycles is it tested to?
BHMA/ANSI Grade 1 certified, and tested and certified to exceed the 500,000 cycles required for that grade. For a facilities or MRO buyer standardizing across a building, that is the grade specified on most commercial egress doors. The series also uses a thru bolt design, which pulls the device against both faces of the door rather than relying on screws into one skin.
13) Can the QED300 exit device be installed on a wood door, or is it steel only?
Wood, steel, or aluminum doors all work. The device ships with both wood screws and machine screws as standard, so you have the fastener for the substrate in the box. Sex bolts are an option on non-fire devices and standard on the fire rated ones, and on a wood door they are what you want for a high traffic opening since they clamp through the leaf instead of threading into the stile.
14) What finishes does the dormakaba QED300 exit device come in, and will it match my other doors?
Two finishes: 689 painted aluminum and 690 painted duranodic bronze. Both are available on the 36 inch and 48 inch devices and with either the 7ft or 8ft door rod length. 689 is the common match for clear anodized aluminum storefront and for most painted or aluminum-finish commercial hardware; 690 matches dark bronze anodized frames. The series is styled to harmonize with other commercial hardware, so pick whichever matches the frame you are mounting to.
