Construction:

With cast iron body construction, cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms, the QDC100 stands up to heavy use over the long term. Innovative construction features like staked valves prevent oil leaks from screws being accidentally backed out too far. And, it’s engineered with all-weather fluid.

Applications

The QDC100 is a cost-effective option ideal for heavy duty applications such as institutional and industrial environments.

A variety of arm types and stop options and non-handed and universal mount design to make it easy to stock and use in a wide variety of applications.

There's no need to re-prep your door. The QDC100 has the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN4040 so it's a simple off-and-on exchange.

Stanley Security QDC112 M 689 LH – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the QDC112 closer to replace an LCN 4040?
Yes, and no re-prep of the door is needed. The QDC100 family shares the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN 4040, so it goes on the existing holes as a straight off-and-on exchange. That is the reason a lot of facilities standardize on it when they are cycling out older cast iron closers building by building.
2) Do I have to order the QDC112 closer left hand or right hand?
The closer body itself is non-handed and universal mount, so a single unit works on either swing. Handing appears as an order option because the tri-pack arm and mounting are set up per opening. Note that QDC116 arms and metal covers are handed, which is the exception in the QDC family. For stocking purposes, the non-handed body is what lets a maintenance shop keep one closer on the shelf for the whole building.
3) What is a tri-pack arm on a door closer and does it mean I can mount it any of three ways?
A tri-pack arm ships with the brackets for regular arm, top jamb and parallel arm mounting in one box, so you decide at the door instead of at the order form. The QDC112 mounts on the pull side or the push side, which is what parallel arm mounting is for when the door swings out into a corridor and you need the closer on the room side.
4) Is the QDC112 closer ADA compliant for a barrier free opening?
The QDC112 is built to ANSI A117.1, the accessibility standard, alongside ANSI/BHMA A156.4 for closers. There is also a Barrier Free option to specify at order time, offered in all three finishes and both handings. If the opening is on an accessible route, order the Barrier Free option rather than assuming the standard build is adjusted for it.
5) Can I put the QDC112 closer on a fire rated door?
Yes. The closer is UL and cUL listed and carries UL10c and UL10b, the positive pressure and neutral pressure fire door test standards. That covers use on labeled fire door assemblies. Bear in mind a hold open arm is not permitted on a fire door unless it releases on alarm, so specify a non-hold-open arm for those openings.
6) Can I use the QDC112 on an aluminum storefront door, or is there a better closer for that?
The QDC112 mounts on wood, aluminum, or hollow metal doors and frames and covers exterior door widths of 32 to 48 inches. For a storefront specifically, the Norton Rixson 1600 Series in the 1600BC family is an aluminum storefront closer with tri-style mounting, Grade 1 and heavy duty. The Norton Rixson 1601P is a Grade 1 tri-mount surface closer with a 180 degree swing at medium duty, which matters where the leaf needs to open past a standard stop.
7) Does the QDC112 hold the door open, and what closer should I order if I need hold open?
The QDC112 uses a tri-pack arm and offers delayed action and back check, but for a hold open arm the Accentra 51 Series is built with a tri-packed hold open arm and adjustable spring sizes 1 through 6, the same size span. The Orca Hardware BHDC1958HO/PA also carries a tri-packed hold open arm on a 1-3/4 inch door. Delayed action, which slows the swing rather than holding the leaf, is available on the Orca BHDC1958DA/PA with a tri-packed non-hold open arm.
8) What is the closest heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer to the Stanley Security QDC112 if the QDC112 is not the right fit?
The BEST HD8000 Series is the nearest straight equivalent: it is a heavy duty, Grade 1 surface mounted closer, matching the QDC112's Grade 1 rating and heavy duty level. The Sargent 1431 Powerglide and the Falcon SC71A are also heavy duty Grade 1 surface mount closers. If the opening calls for an extra heavy duty body, the BEST EHD9000 Series covers spring sizes 1 through 6, the same size range the QDC112 spans.
9) I need a tri-pack arm closer like the QDC112 but on a lighter interior door. What should I use?
The QDC112 carries a tri-pack arm and a heavy duty cast iron body sized 1 through 6. For lighter interior openings, the Arrow DCN314 is a Grade 1 surface closer with a regular/parallel tri-pack arm and adjustable spring size 1 through 4, rated light duty. The Accentra 1101BF pairs a tri-packed non-hold open arm with adjustable spring sizes 1 through 4. The Design Hardware 316 Series also uses a tri-packed non-hold open arm and is rated medium to heavy duty, which sits between the two.
10) The QDC112 replaces an LCN 4040. Which other closers in the LCN line are not the same swap?
The QDC112 shares the footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover of the LCN 4040, so it goes on without re-prepping the door. That does not extend to the rest of the LCN range: the LCN 1250 Series is a light duty closer with spring sizes 1 through 5, the LCN 1261 is light to medium duty with sizes 1 through 5 and a cast iron body, and the LCN 1450 is medium duty cast aluminum with sizes 1 through 6. The LCN 1460T is the heavy duty member of that group. Each of those has its own prep, so an existing 1250 or 1450 opening is not a drop-in for the QDC112.
11) Which closers look like a substitute for the Stanley QDC112 but will not hold up on the same door?
Several surface closers sit at the same Grade 1 rating as the QDC112 but at a lighter duty level, and duty level is what a high-traffic institutional opening reads. The Arrow DC314 in the DC300 Series is Grade 1 but light duty. The BEST SL6000 Series is Grade 1 light duty, and the Norton Rixson 160 Series is Grade 1 light duty as well. The Falcon SC91A is light duty and Grade 3. The QDC112 is Grade 1 heavy duty, so matching only on the grade line of a spec will land a lighter closer on the opening.
12) I need an ADA barrier free closer instead of the standard QDC112. What are my options?
The QDC112 is offered with a Barrier Free option in 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass, and meets ANSI A117.1. Comparable barrier free closers include the Cal-Royal 500S, a Grade 1 barrier free closer with adjustable back-check, and the Cal-Royal N900PBF from the 900 Series, a Grade 1 hydraulic barrier free closer. The Calibre CA9901 is a Grade 1 tri-pack arm ADA surface mount closer with spring sizes 2 through 5, and the Imperial USA TC4300 is a heavy duty size 1 through 6 ADA closer.
13) Is a Cal-Royal 400 Series closer an equal swap for the Stanley QDC112?
No. The Cal-Royal 400 Series is a Grade 2 commercial hydraulic closer, while the QDC112 is Grade 1 and heavy duty. If the spec on the drawing calls for Grade 1, the Cal-Royal 500S and the Cal-Royal 700S are Grade 1 within the same brand, and the 700S carries a dual valve sized body with an adjustable tube arm.
14) Is a cast iron door closer worth it over an aluminum body for a school or hospital corridor?
For high traffic institutional openings, yes. The QDC112 uses a cast iron body, cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms, and the valves are staked so a screw backed out too far will not cause an oil leak, which is the usual failure mode when a closer gets adjusted by whoever is on site. All-weather fluid keeps the sweep speed consistent when the corridor is cold. Cast aluminum bodied closers like the Falcon SC81A are medium duty by comparison; the QDC112 is rated heavy duty.
15) Does the QDC112 come with delayed action and backcheck, or do I add those?
Back check valve is standard on the QDC100 Series, and delayed action is available as a performance option. Backcheck is what stops the door slamming into an adjacent wall when wind catches it, so on an exterior opening it is doing real work. Delayed action holds the door open longer on the initial swing, which is what you want at a door people push a cart or a bed through.
16) What finishes does the QDC112 closer come in, and will it match the other closers in my building?
Three finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass. All three are available in both left and right hand and with or without the Barrier Free option. 689 aluminum is the standard painted commercial finish that matches most existing closers on an aluminum storefront or a painted hollow metal frame; 690 dark bronze is the usual match for bronze anodized entrances.
17) I only need a closer for a light interior office door. Is the QDC112 overkill?
Probably. The QDC112 is a heavy duty commercial closer for institutional and industrial traffic, and the cast iron body is part of what you are paying for. For a low traffic interior door, a light duty Grade 1 closer covers it: the BEST SL6000 Series, the Arrow DC314 in the DC300 Series, or the LCN 1250 with all-weather fluid in sizes 1-5. Where the QDC112 earns its place is a door being cycled hundreds of times a day, or an exterior opening taking wind load.
18) What is the difference between the Stanley QDC112 and the Corbin Russwin DC8200 for a heavy traffic opening?
The QDC112 is a non-handed Grade 1 closer with a tri-pack arm, mounting pull side or push side on wood, aluminum, or hollow metal doors and frames, covering interior door widths of 30 to 48 inches and exterior widths of 32 to 48 inches. The Corbin Russwin DC8200 Series is a Grade 1 surface closer supplied with a double lever regular arm for pull side mounting on a 1-3/4 inch door. The DC6200 Series is the same double lever regular arm, pull side arrangement in the DC6000 family, and the DC3200 is a Grade 1 surface closer with a regular arm. The decision is arm and mounting side, not grade, since all four are Grade 1.
19) Is there another dormakaba closer that covers the same size 1 to 6 range as the QDC112?
Yes. The QDC112 is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer adjustable across sizes 1 to 6. The Dorma 8916-JT from the 8900 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface closer adjustable size 1 through 6, but it uses a flat non-hold open arm on a jamb track with frame face, pull side mounting, where the QDC112 mounts pull side or push side. The Dormakaba 8616 AF86P FC SNB1 689 is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a flat arm, non-hold open, tri-pack. For a lighter opening the Dormakaba 7414 covers size 1 through 4 at medium duty, and the DORMA 7303 is a standard duty Grade 1 closer in the 7300 Series.
20) What is a simpler Grade 1 alternative to the Stanley QDC112 for a moderate traffic office door?
The QDC112 is a heavy duty cast iron closer aimed at institutional and industrial use. For moderate traffic, the Sargent 1131 is a Grade 1 adjustable surface closer for medium-traffic commercial applications, and the Sargent 1331 is a Grade 1 medium duty closer with a universal aluminum body. The Norton Rixson 8501A is a Grade 1 tri-mount surface closer, medium duty, with an adjustable size 1 through 6 spring, matching the QDC112's size range. The BEST HD7000 Series is Grade 1 medium duty with adjustable spring power and backcheck control.
21) Which cast iron door closers compare to the Stanley QDC112 for an institutional retrofit?
The QDC112 uses cast iron body construction with a cold-forged pinion shaft, forged steel arms and all-weather fluid. Among comparable cast iron closers, the Sargent 281 Powerglide is a heavy-duty Grade 1 cast iron surface closer, and the LCN 1261 is a cast iron surface closer with adjustable spring sizes 1 through 5, rated light to medium duty. Several peers in the same Grade 1 heavy duty class use aluminum instead: the Sargent 1331 has a universal aluminum body and the Falcon SC71A is a heavy duty Grade 1 cast aluminum closer.
22) I need a UL10c fire rated closer. Does the QDC112 qualify and what else does?
The QDC112 is UL/cUL listed to UL10c and UL10b and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4 and ANSI A117.1, so it suits a labeled opening. Among comparable Grade 1 closers certified for commercial use, the BEST HD8000 Series and BEST EHD9000 Series are Grade 1 heavy duty, and the Sargent 1431 Powerglide is Grade 1 heavy duty with adjustable spring power. Confirm the specific fire label listing for the model you choose against the opening's label requirement before ordering.
23) The QDC112 comes with a full-size cover. Which comparable closers are supplied without one?
The QDC112 carries a full-size cover on every configuration in 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass. If a cover is not wanted or is being supplied separately, the Arrow DCN314 and Arrow DCN325 are Grade 1 surface closers furnished less cover with a regular/parallel tri-pack arm, the DCN314 in spring size 1 through 4 and the DCN325 in size 1 through 6. Among covered options, the Dexter DCH1000 Series is a Grade 1 tri-mount surface closer with a full cover, and the Design Hardware 316 Series is supplied with a cover.
24) Which tri-mount closers can I standardize on across a facility alongside the QDC112?
The QDC112 is non-handed with a universal mount design and takes wood and machine screws, sex nuts, and self-reaming self-tapping screws as standard, which is what makes it easy to stock across many openings. Comparable tri-mount Grade 1 closers that stock the same way include the Dexter DCH4000, DCL2000 and DCM1000 Series, each a Grade 1 surface closer mountable regular, parallel or top jamb, and the Norton Rixson 8501A, a Grade 1 tri-mount closer with an adjustable size 1 through 6 spring. The Accentra 2701 in the 2700 Series offers tri-pack mounting with adjustable spring sizes 1 through 6.
25) Is a QDC112 closer approved for a commercial building or is it a residential closer?
Strictly commercial. It is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4 and aimed at institutional and industrial environments. Grade 1 is the highest of the three ANSI/BHMA performance grades and is what most commercial specs and school or healthcare standards call for by name.
