Construction:

With cast iron body construction, cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms, the QDC100 stands up to heavy use over the long term. Innovative construction features like staked valves prevent oil leaks from screws being accidentally backed out too far. And, it’s engineered with all-weather fluid.

Applications

The QDC100 is a cost-effective option ideal for heavy duty applications such as institutional and industrial environments.

A variety of arm types and stop options and non-handed and universal mount design to make it easy to stock and use in a wide variety of applications.

There's no need to re-prep your door. The QDC100 has the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN4040 so it's a simple off-and-on exchange.

Stanley Security QDC112 R 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Stanley QDC112 closer drop onto my existing LCN 4040 prep without re-drilling the door?
Yes. The QDC100 Series shares the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN 4040, so it goes on as a direct off-and-on exchange with no re-prep of the door or frame. That is the main reason facilities running 4040s standardize on it when closers start failing one at a time.
2) Is the Stanley QDC112 door closer fire rated and can it go on a labeled door?
The QDC112 is UL and cUL listed and carries UL10c and UL10b, the positive pressure and neutral pressure fire door test standards. It also meets ANSI/BHMA A156.4 and ANSI A117.1, the accessibility standard. Note the hold open function: a closer with a mechanical hold open arm must not be used on a fire rated opening that has to self close, so on a labeled door specify the non hold open configuration.
3) Do I have to order a handed door closer for a left hand versus right hand door?
No. The QDC112 is non-handed, so one unit covers either hand of door and you can stock a single part number across a building. The handed exception in the QDC family is the QDC116 arms with metal covers, which are handed. The tri-pack arm also means the same closer mounts regular arm, top jamb or parallel arm.
4) Can the QDC112 closer be mounted on the push side of the door instead of the pull side?
Both. The QDC112 mounts pull side or push side, and the tri-pack arm covers regular arm, top jamb and parallel arm applications. Parallel arm on the push side is the usual pick in a corridor where a projecting closer would get hit; regular arm on the pull side gives the most efficient power for a heavy exterior door.
5) Will this Stanley closer work on a hollow metal door and frame, or is it only for wood?
Wood, aluminum and hollow metal doors and frames are all covered. Fasteners ship accordingly: wood and machine screws standard, plus sex nuts and self-reaming, self-tapping screws standard. The sex nuts are what you need through a wood or mineral core door where screws alone will strip out under closer torque, and the self-reaming screws are for hollow metal.
6) What does the Barrier Free option on the QDC112 closer actually get me?
Barrier Free is the ADA-oriented setup, tied to ANSI A117.1, which the QDC112 meets. It sets opening force low enough that someone in a wheelchair or with limited strength can push the door. Order it where the opening is on an accessible route, an interior office or restroom door most often. Leave the option as None where the door faces weather or heavy traffic and needs full spring power to latch. Both choices come in 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass.
7) What is the closest heavy duty replacement for a QDC112 cast iron closer on an institutional opening?
The Sargent 281 Powerglide is a cast iron surface door closer rated Grade 1 and Heavy Duty, the same construction class and grade as the QDC112, which is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface mounted closer with a cast iron body. The BEST HD8000 Series and the LCN 1460T are also Grade 1 heavy duty surface closers if the opening is being re-specified rather than matched to cast iron.
8) Which door closer holds the door open like a QDC112 tri-pack hold open arm?
The Accentra 51 Series ships with a Tri-Packed Hold Open Arm and adjustable size 1-6, and the Orca Hardware BHDC1958 HO/PA is a hold open closer with a tri-packed hold open arm and a parallel bracket. Both give the same hold open behavior as the QDC112 tri-pack with hold open. Tri-pack closers such as the Accentra 1101BF, the Accentra 2701 and the Design Hardware 116 Series carry non-hold-open arms instead, so they close every time and will not stand the door open.
9) Which closers are Grade 1 like the QDC112 but not heavy duty, and what changes?
Grade 1 is a performance certification, not a duty class, so several Grade 1 closers sit well below the QDC112's heavy duty rating. The Arrow DC314 and the Arrow DCN325 are Grade 1 but light duty, the Falcon SC61A is Grade 1 light to medium duty, and the Norton Rixson 1601P and the Sargent 1131 are Grade 1 medium duty. The QDC112 carries Grade 1 with a heavy duty rating and cast iron body construction. On a high traffic institutional opening, matching only the grade line on the spec does not match the duty class.
10) Is a slide track or jamb track closer a substitute for the QDC112?
They are different arm systems, not drop-in swaps. The QDC112 uses a tri-pack arm with a full-size rounded plastic cover and mounts pull side or push side on wood, aluminum, or hollow metal doors and frames. The Corbin Russwin DC5230 is a Grade 1 surface closer that comes standard with a slide track arm and pull side mounting, and the Dorma 8916-JT is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a jamb track and frame face mounting on the pull side. A slide track or jamb track needs its own track prep on the door or frame, so switching to one is a different install than swapping a tri-pack arm closer.
11) Is a Grade 2 or Grade 3 closer an acceptable swap for a Grade 1 QDC112 on a fire rated opening?
No. The QDC112 is Grade 1 and is UL/cUL listed to UL10c and UL10b for fire door assemblies. The Cal-Royal 400 Series is a Grade 2 commercial hydraulic closer and the Falcon SC91A is a Grade 3 light duty closer, so neither carries the Grade 1 rating a spec written around the QDC112 calls for. If the specification requires Grade 1, stay with a Grade 1 peer such as the BEST EHD9000 Series, which is Grade 1 and extra heavy duty.
12) Which closer matches the QDC112 when the opening needs delayed action?
Delayed action is available on the QDC112, which also has a back check valve standard. Among comparable closers, the Orca Hardware BHDC1958 DA/PA and the BHDC2011 DA/PA are delayed action closers with a regular arm and parallel bracket, both carrying a tri-packed non-hold-open arm and a 1-3/4 inch door thickness. Note that those two are non-hold-open, so on an opening that needs both delayed action and hold open they behave differently from a QDC112 tri-pack with hold open.
13) I have LCN 4040 closers on my doors. Which closers besides the QDC112 should I look at?
The QDC112 shares the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN 4040, so it goes on without re-prepping the door. If you are considering staying inside the LCN line, the LCN 1460T is a heavy duty surface closer with a powder coat finish and the LCN 1261 is a cast iron surface closer with adjustable spring sizes 1-5 in the light to medium duty class. The LCN 1250 is light duty with all-weather fluid and ADA compliance. Only the QDC112 is described as a direct off-and-on exchange for the 4040 prep.
14) What finishes does the Stanley QDC112 closer come in and what cover is on it?
Three finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass. The cover is a full-size rounded plastic cover, which is what makes the profile match an LCN 4040 already on the door, so a one-off replacement in a corridor of existing closers doesn't stand out. 689 is the default across most commercial buildings; 690 pairs with dark bronze storefront.
15) Is a cast iron door closer worth it over an aluminum body one for a school or industrial door?
For high abuse openings, yes. The QDC112 uses a cast iron body, cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms, and it is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer built for institutional and industrial traffic. The valves are staked so a screw backed out too far won't dump oil, and the fluid is all-weather so the sweep speed doesn't slow down in winter on an exterior door. A cast aluminum body closer like the Falcon SC81A is medium duty; the LCN 1261 is cast iron but rated light to medium.
16) What else could I buy instead of the Stanley QDC112 if I need a Grade 1 heavy duty surface closer?
Close equivalents in Grade 1 heavy duty: the BEST HD8000 Series and the BEST EHD9000 Series, the Falcon SC71A, the Sargent 281 Powerglide cast iron closer and the Sargent 1431 Powerglide. The Norton Rixson 1600BC Series is another Grade 1 heavy duty option. Where the QDC112 separates itself is the LCN 4040 footprint match, so if the deciding factor is dropping onto existing prep rather than raw duty rating, none of those substitute cleanly.
17) Does the Stanley QDC112 have delayed action and backcheck, or do I have to order those separately?
Back check valve comes standard on the QDC100 Series, and delayed action is available as a security performance option. Backcheck is what stops a wind-caught exterior door from slamming the lever into the adjacent wall; delayed action holds the door open longer through the first part of the sweep, which is what you want on a door people push carts or gurneys through.
18) What is a lighter duty closer to use instead of a QDC112 on a low traffic interior office door?
The QDC112 is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer built for institutional and industrial traffic. For a low traffic interior door, the BEST HD7000 Series is a Grade 1 medium duty surface closer with adjustable spring power and backcheck control, the Falcon SC81A is a Grade 1 medium duty cast aluminum surface closer, and the BEST SL6000 Series is a Grade 1 light duty surface closer with adjustable spring sizes. All three still hold Grade 1 while dropping the duty class.
19) Which non-handed tri-mount closers can a distributor stock in place of a QDC112 for general use?
The QDC112 is non-handed with a universal mount design, which is why it stocks across regular, parallel and top jamb applications. Comparable tri-mount closers include the Dexter DCH1000 Series, a Grade 1 surface closer that mounts regular, parallel or top jamb with a full cover, the Norton Rixson 8501A, a Grade 1 tri-mount closer with adjustable size 1-6 spring, and the Arrow DCN314, a tri-pack regular/parallel arm closer with adjustable spring size 1-4. The Dexter DCH1000 is the one of the three that includes a full cover, matching the covered look of the QDC112.
20) What should I use instead of a QDC112 on an aluminum storefront door?
The QDC112 does mount to aluminum doors and frames, and covers 30 to 48 inch interior and 32 to 48 inch exterior door widths. The Norton Rixson 1600BC Series is specifically an aluminum storefront door closer with tri-style mounting, rated Grade 1 and Heavy Duty, so it is the closer to look at when the opening is a narrow stile storefront rather than a hollow metal or wood door.
21) The QDC112 comes with a full cover. Which comparable closers come without one?
The Arrow DCN314 and the Arrow DCN325 are both supplied less cover, with regular/parallel tri-pack arms, the DCN314 adjustable size 1-4 and the DCN325 adjustable size 1-6. The Design Hardware 316 Series is supplied with a cover, and the Dexter DCH1000 Series includes a full cover. The QDC112 carries a full-size rounded plastic cover on every configuration, so a less-cover closer changes the finished appearance of the opening even when the arm and mounting match.
22) Is the Arrow DCN500DP drop plate an alternative to a QDC112 closer?
No. The Arrow DCN500DP is a parallel drop plate for the DCN500, a mounting bracket rather than a closer. The QDC112 is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface mounted door closer that ships as a tri-pack with hold open and a full-size rounded plastic cover, with wood and machine screws, sex nuts, and self-reaming self-tapping screws standard. A drop plate is an accessory used to gain mounting surface on an opening; it does not close a door on its own.
23) Which heavy duty closers can replace a QDC112 on a 1-3/4 inch hollow metal door?
The QDC112 mounts on wood, aluminum, or hollow metal doors and frames, pull side or push side. Among comparable Grade 1 closers listing a 1-3/4 inch door thickness, the Corbin Russwin DC8200 Series and DC6200 Series are surface closers with a double lever regular arm and pull side mounting, and the DC3200 is a Grade 1 closer with a regular arm and surface mounting. All three are pull side or regular arm configurations, so confirm the mounting side on the opening before swapping from a tri-pack closer that can go either side.
24) What other tri-pack heavy duty closers compete with the QDC112 for an industrial opening?
The Design Hardware 416 Series and 116 Series are both heavy duty closers with tri-packed arms, and the Dormakaba 8616 AF86P FC SNB1 is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a flat arm non-hold-open tri-pack. The Imperial USA TC4300 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty size 1-6 ADA closer, and the Sargent 1431 Powerglide is a Grade 1 heavy duty surface closer with adjustable spring power. The QDC112 differs from the Design Hardware and Dormakaba 8616 options in that it is a tri-pack with hold open rather than a non-hold-open arm.
25) Do I need to order a different closer for each opening if my building has a mix of arm and stop conditions?
No, and that's the stocking argument for the QDC100 Series. It offers 10 arm options across variant arm and stop types, and the closer body itself is non-handed with a universal mount, so one body covers a wide range of openings and you change the arm to suit. A property manager or MRO buyer can carry one closer plus a small set of arms instead of a matrix of handed units.
26) Is the Stanley QDC112 approved for commercial use or is it a residential closer?
Commercial, and specifically the heavy end of it. The QDC112 is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer aimed at institutional and industrial buildings, and it meets ANSI/BHMA A156.4. For a light residential or light commercial interior door, something like the Falcon SC91A, a Grade 3 light duty closer, is the closer match to the service level.
