Stanley Security QDC115 R 689 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Stanley QDC115 closer replace an LCN 4040 without re-drilling the door?
It's a straight swap. The QDC100 Series uses the same footprint, bolt pattern and rounded cover as the LCN 4040, so you pull the old closer and mount the QDC115 on the existing prep. That is the main reason this closer gets specified on retrofit work in schools and hospitals where every opening already has 4040 holes in it.
2) What door widths will the QDC115 door closer handle?
Interior openings from 30 to 48 inches, exterior openings from 32 to 48 inches. Spring power adjusts across sizes 1 through 6, so one closer covers a narrow interior office door and a 48 inch exterior entrance by turning the adjustment rather than stocking different models. Anything wider than 48 inches is outside what this closer is rated to control.
3) Do I need to order a left hand or right hand version of the QDC115 closer?
No handing to specify. The QDC115 is non-handed and universal mount, so the same unit goes on a left or right hand door. That is what makes it practical to stock one part number for a whole building. Note the QDC116 is the handed version with metal covers, so if you are cross-shopping within the family, handing only enters the picture there.
4) Can the QDC115 closer mount on the push side, or is it pull side only?
Both. Mounting location is pull side or push side, which covers regular arm, top jamb and parallel arm applications on the same closer. Choose based on which way the door swings into the corridor and whether you need the body out of the traffic path.
5) Will the QDC115 door closer work on an aluminum storefront door, or only hollow metal?
Wood, aluminum and hollow metal doors and frames are all covered. Fasteners ship with wood and machine screws standard plus sex nuts and self-reaming, self-tapping screws standard, so the mounting hardware for a through-bolted wood door and a hollow metal frame is in the box rather than a separate line on the order.
6) Is the Stanley QDC115 closer approved for a fire rated door?
It's UL/cUL listed to UL10c and UL10b, and certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.4 at Grade 1. It also meets ANSI A117.1, the accessibility standard, which is what a facility needs on the barrier free openings. Those are the listings a code official and an MRO spec writer look for on a labeled door assembly.
7) What is the closest cross-brand equivalent to a Stanley Security QDC115 heavy duty cast iron closer?
The Sargent 281 Powerglide is the nearest match in construction and duty class: it is a cast iron surface door closer rated Grade 1 and heavy duty, the same grade and duty level the QDC115 carries. The BEST HD8000 Series is a second heavy duty Grade 1 surface closer if the specifier will accept a different body material. Both, like the QDC115, are surface mounted closers for commercial door hardware.
8) I need a hold open arm on the door. What closer should I use instead of the QDC115 extra duty arm version?
The QDC115 with the extra duty arm is not a hold open unit. For a hold open function, the Accentra 51 Series carries a tri-packed hold open arm across spring sizes 1 to 6, and the Orca Hardware BHDC1958 HO/PA is a hold open door closer with a parallel bracket for doors 1-3/4 inch thick. Both give you the arm function the extra duty QDC115 arm does not provide.
9) Is the LCN 1250 a substitute for the QDC115 since both are LCN-pattern surface closers?
They are not the same class of closer. The LCN 1250 Series is a light duty surface mounted closer with spring sizes 1 through 5. The QDC115 is a heavy duty Grade 1 closer with closer sizes 1 to 6 and cast iron construction, specified for institutional and industrial openings. Within the LCN line, the 1460T is the heavy duty Grade 1 commercial unit, and the 1261 in the 1260 Series is light to medium duty with cast iron construction and spring sizes 1 to 5.
10) What Grade 1 barrier free closers can I use in place of the QDC115 Barrier Free option?
The QDC115 offers a Barrier Free option in each of its 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass finishes, and the closer is built to ANSI A117.1. Cross-brand, the Cal-Royal 500S is a Grade 1 barrier free closer with adjustable back-check, and the Cal-Royal N900PBF in the 900 Door Closer Series is a barrier free Grade 1 hydraulic surface closer. The Calibre CA9901 is a Grade 1 ADA surface mount closer with a tri-pack arm in sizes 2 to 5.
11) Can I use a Falcon SC91A where a QDC115 is specified?
No. The Falcon SC91A in the SC90A Series is a Grade 3 light duty cast aluminum surface closer, while the QDC115 is Grade 1 and heavy duty with cast iron construction. If the spec reads Grade 1 the SC91A will not satisfy it. Staying in the Falcon line, the SC71A is Grade 1 heavy duty and the SC81A is Grade 1 medium duty.
12) The drawing calls for Grade 1 and someone proposed a Cal-Royal 400. Does that hold against a QDC115?
The Cal-Royal 400 Series is a Grade 2 commercial hydraulic door closer, so it does not meet a Grade 1 line item. The QDC115 is Grade 1 and heavy duty. If the Cal-Royal line is preferred, the 700S in the 700 Series is a Grade 1 dual valve sized closer with an adjustable tube arm, and the 500S is Grade 1 barrier free.
13) I am standardizing a portfolio on one closer across wood, aluminum and hollow metal doors. What are my cross-brand candidates alongside the QDC115?
The QDC115 mounts to wood, aluminum, or hollow metal doors and frames, ships with wood and machine screws plus sex nuts and self-reaming, self-tapping screws standard, and is non-handed, which keeps one part number on the shelf for either hand. Comparable single-SKU candidates include the Norton Rixson 8501A, a Grade 1 tri-mount closer with adjustable size 1 to 6 spring, and the Dexter DCH4000 Series, a Grade 1 surface closer with tri mount for regular, parallel or top jamb mounting. For aluminum storefront in particular, the Norton Rixson 1600BC Series is a heavy duty Grade 1 storefront closer with tri-style mounting.
14) What is the Barrier Free option on the QDC115 closer and when should I order it?
Barrier Free is one of two choices under Options, the other being None. Order Barrier Free on openings that have to meet accessible opening force, which is typical on public entries, restrooms and any door on an accessible route in a government, healthcare or education facility. The closer is certified to ANSI A117.1, the accessibility standard, either way; the Barrier Free build is how you get the reduced opening force at the door.
15) What finishes does the QDC115 closer come in, and will it match the other closers in my building?
Three finishes: 689 aluminum, 690 dark bronze and 696 satin brass. Those are the standard painted closer finishes, so 689 matches most existing aluminum closers and 690 matches dark bronze storefront. All three are available with or without the Barrier Free option under the full-size rounded plastic cover.
16) Cast iron or aluminum closer for a high traffic school entrance?
The QDC115 is cast iron body with a cold-forged pinion shaft and forged steel arms, which is the construction you want on a door cycling all day in an institutional or industrial building. Staked valves keep the adjustment screws from being backed all the way out and dumping oil, a common failure on doors the public can reach. All-weather fluid means the sweep speed does not go sluggish in a January cold snap on an exterior door. Cast aluminum closers like the Falcon SC81A are medium duty by comparison; if you want another cast iron heavy duty option, the Sargent 281 Powerglide is also cast iron.
17) What heavy duty Grade 1 door closers can I use instead of the Stanley QDC115?
Several direct peers sit in the same heavy duty Grade 1 class. The BEST EHD9000 Series is extra heavy duty with adjustable spring sizes 1 to 6, the closest match on power range. The BEST HD8000 Series and the Falcon SC71A Series are both heavy duty Grade 1. The Sargent 1431 Powerglide is heavy duty Grade 1 with adjustable spring power. The Dormakaba 8616 with flat arm is heavy duty Grade 1 and tri-pack. What the QDC115 brings that these do not is the LCN 4040 footprint and bolt pattern, so if you are replacing 4040s the QDC115 saves you re-prepping the door.
18) Is a heavy duty closer like the QDC115 overkill for a light traffic interior office door?
For a low traffic interior door it is more closer than the opening needs. The QDC115 is heavy duty, built for institutional and industrial applications. If the door is an interior office or a light commercial application, a light duty Grade 1 closer such as the BEST SL6000 Series, the Arrow DC314, or the Norton Rixson 160 Series covers it. Where the QDC115 earns its place is exterior entrances, stairwells, corridors and anything the public cycles hundreds of times a day.
19) Does the QDC115 closer have delayed action and backcheck, or are those extra?
Back check valve is standard, and delayed action is among the premium performance options on the Grade 1 QDC100 Series. Backcheck is what stops the door slamming into the adjacent wall when wind catches an exterior entrance; delayed action holds the door open longer on the sweep so a cart, a gurney or someone with a walker gets through before it starts closing.
20) What is the difference between the extra duty arm and the tri-pack arm on the QDC100 closers?
The QDC100 family offers two arm types, a tri-pack arm and an extra duty arm, across 10 arm options covering different arm and stop types. The QDC115 is built with the extra duty arm, which is the choice where the door needs a positive stop built into the arm or the opening takes abuse, common on exterior entries with no wall stop. A tri-pack arm is the one that ships to cover regular, parallel and top jamb mounting; if you want that flexibility from another brand, the Accentra 2701 Series and the Design Hardware 416 Series are both tri-pack.
21) I need a door that stays open on its own. Does the QDC115 hold open?
Hold open is not among the two option choices offered on the QDC115, which are None and Barrier Free. For a hold open arm, the Accentra 51 Series is a tri-packed hold open closer with sizes 1 to 6, and the Orca BHDC1958HO is a tri-packed hold open with a parallel bracket. Bear in mind a mechanical hold open arm is generally not permitted on a fire rated opening; those doors need a closer holder release device instead.
22) Which heavy duty closers are alternatives to the QDC115 if I want a slide track or flat arm rather than a projecting arm?
The Dorma 8916-JT in the 8900 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty closer with a flat non-hold open arm and a jamb track, frame face mounted on the pull side, adjustable size 1 to 6. The Corbin Russwin DC5230 in the DC5000 Series is a Grade 1 surface closer with a slide track arm standard, pull side mounting, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The QDC115 uses an extra duty arm and mounts pull side or push side.
23) My spec calls for Grade 1 but the door is a medium traffic corridor, not industrial. What sits between the QDC115 and a light duty closer?
Medium duty Grade 1 options include the Sargent 1431 Powerglide, a heavy duty Grade 1 unit if you want to stay at the top, and below it the Sargent 1131 for medium-traffic commercial openings and the Sargent 1331 with a universal aluminum body, both Grade 1 medium duty. The Norton Rixson 8501A is a Grade 1 medium duty tri-mount surface closer with an adjustable size 1 to 6 spring, the same closer size range the QDC115 covers.
24) Which heavy duty closers compete with the QDC115 on a fire rated opening?
The QDC115 is UL/cUL listed to UL10c and UL10b and built to ANSI/BHMA A156.4. Among heavy duty Grade 1 peers, the BEST EHD9000 Series is an extra heavy-duty surface closer with adjustable spring sizes 1 to 6, and the Falcon SC71A in the SC70A Series is a heavy-duty Grade 1 surface-mount closer. The Dormakaba 8616 AF86P FC SNB1 689 is a heavy duty Grade 1 unit with a flat arm, non-hold open, tri-pack. Confirm the fire listing on whichever peer you take to the AHJ.
25) I need a non-handed closer I can stock for both hands of door. Which alternatives to the QDC115 offer that?
The QDC115 is non-handed with a universal mount design and covers interior doors 30 to 48 inches wide and exterior doors 32 to 48 inches. For the same one-part-fits-either-hand stocking approach elsewhere, the Norton Rixson 1601P is a Grade 1 tri-mount closer with 180 degree swing, and the Dexter DCH1000 Series is a Grade 1 surface closer with tri mount for regular, parallel or top jamb mounting and a full cover. The Arrow DCN325 is a Grade 1 surface closer with a regular/parallel tri-pack arm in adjustable spring sizes 1 to 6.
26) The QDC115 comes with a full-size rounded plastic cover. What if I need a metal cover or no cover at all?
Every QDC115 with the R trim carries the full-size rounded plastic cover; within the Stanley Security range the QDC116 arms are handed and use metal covers. If you want the closer without a cover, the Arrow DCN314 and DCN325 are Grade 1 surface door closers supplied less cover with regular/parallel tri-pack arms, the DCN314 in adjustable spring size 1 to 4 and the DCN325 in size 1 to 6. The Design Hardware 316 Series is a medium to heavy duty closer supplied with a cover.
27) What heavy duty alternatives to the QDC115 use a tri-pack arm instead of an extra duty arm?
The Design Hardware 116 Series and 416 Series are both heavy duty closers with a tri-packed non-hold open arm, and the Accentra 2701 in the 2700 Series is an architectural closer with tri-pack mounting and adjustable spring sizes 1 to 6. The QDC115 carries the extra duty arm; the QDC100 line also offers a tri-pack arm, so you can stay within the series if the tri-pack arrangement is what the opening needs.
28) If delayed action is the reason I am looking at the QDC115, what else offers it?
The QDC100 series supplies delayed action as a premium option along with a back check valve standard. Cross-brand, the Orca Hardware BHDC1958 DA/PA is a delayed action closer with a regular arm and parallel bracket for 1-3/4 inch doors, and the BHDC2011 DA/PA is the same delayed action arrangement in the BHDC2011 series. The Cal-Royal 500S offers adjustable back-check on a Grade 1 barrier free body.
29) Which Corbin Russwin closer lines correspond to the QDC115 for a Grade 1 surface application?
Corbin Russwin offers several Grade 1 surface closers for 1-3/4 inch doors: the DC3200 in the DC3000 Series with a regular arm, the DC6200 in the DC6000 Series and the DC8200 in the DC8000 Series, both with a double lever regular arm and pull side mounting. The QDC115 is Grade 1 as well and mounts pull side or push side with its extra duty arm.
30) What heavy duty ADA closer alternatives to the QDC115 cover the full size 1 to 6 spring range?
The Imperial USA TC4300 Series is a Grade 1 heavy duty ADA door closer in size 1 to 6, and the BEST EHD9000 Series is an extra heavy-duty Grade 1 closer with adjustable spring sizes 1 to 6. The QDC115 covers closer sizes 1 to 6, is built to ANSI A117.1, and offers a Barrier Free option.
31) Is the QDC115 cover metal or plastic, and will it take abuse in a public corridor?
Full-size rounded plastic cover on the QDC115, the R trim, on all six build combinations. The rounded profile is what matches the LCN 4040 cover line if you are mixing new closers with existing ones on the same corridor. If the location needs a metal cover, that is the QDC116, which uses metal covers and handed arms.
32) Is the Arrow DCN500DP drop plate a substitute for a QDC115 closer?
No. The Arrow DCN500DP is a parallel drop plate for the DCN500, a mounting bracket rather than a closer body. The QDC115 is a complete surface mounted door closer with an extra duty arm and hydraulic control. A drop plate only carries a closer where the frame face has no room for it; you still need the closer itself.
